You guys are really getting into the gritty with Steely Dan now. My favorite band ever and my favorite album of theirs which is saying a lot cause all of their albums are basically flawless and so unique in their own way. Steely Ben, def thanks for taking the time to put all of these videos together. The Caves of Altamira in northern Spain is one of the places where Paleolithic and then Mesolithic West Hunter Gatherers held out during the last Ice Age and contains some earlier examples of ancient art. And the cave apparently was discovered by a youth who wandered into it by chance, while exploring the country side near his town. After the ice sheets receded towards the artic they started following the game towards the north and were arguably the first the ancestral group of people that repopulated Western Europe after the Ice Age. They were joined around 7000/6000 BCE by the Early European Farmers who came from Anatolia and then about 4000 BCE by so called Bronze Age Metal workers, coming from Southern Russia/Ukraine region. The mix of these 3 populations gave rise to Modern Europeans.

Seefra? Dan? It's obvious that you both seem to have the same reaction to "The Dan" that we all did, the first time we heard them... It's a wonderful thing! Please, please, please! consider continuing this journey, throughout the whole Dan discography, as well as Walter and Donalds Solo efforts,,.. Your minds will be blown, and your channel will grow!! You've tapped a very, very deep well of musicianship and excellence.. Your own music (Which I like), will grow exponentially as well ...Do it... You will never be sorry.. :)

I think so, too: Fagen & Becker paid homage to our ancestors, with some of their descendants listening to this very video. Each time I see that painting of the artist blowing ochre, charcoal, iron rust and other tints over the back of his hand, something tugs at my heartstrings...like a yearning to want to meet him, and all of them who left their hundreds of handprints in different hues throughout that and other cave systems. Yep, memory sweeps over me, as Fagen sang. It's difficult to describe the exact feeling, but I know there's an involuntarily disconnectedness from fellow humans who just barely remained alive, after breaking out of a continental barrier, and who just might be among my relatives. Jeez, I hope you can understand/comprehend why "Caves" touches me so profoundly, reaching out from beyond 12,000 years and using paintings to tell us who they are/were...a kind of handshake of a greeting to the future "themselves."

Agreed. In my opinion Steely Dan’s best work is not their radio hits but the so called “deep cuts”, of which there are so many songs. They took so much time to perfect every song on every album and it shows. Every song is so unique and musically/ lyrically brilliant. They never phoned it in.

From Wiki: The Cave of Altamira (/ˌæltəˈmɪərə/; Spanish: Cueva de Altamira [ˈkweβa ðe altaˈmiɾa]) is a cave complex, located near the historic town of Santillana del Mar in Cantabria, Spain. It is renowned for prehistoric parietal cave art featuring charcoal drawings and polychrome paintings of contemporary local fauna and human hands. The earliest paintings were applied during the Upper Paleolithic, around 36,000 years ago.[1] The site was discovered in 1868 by Modesto Cubillas and subsequently studied by Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola.[2]

I hope you'll understand where I'm coming from regarding this song. [It always seems odd to me to call SD performances "songs." They're obviously much more than that, at least to me.] Something about "Caves" has always touched me deeply. I view it as an attempt by ancient humans to communicate not only to themselves but to yet unknown generations of their offspring...which are us. Perhaps they could foresee that humanity would always search for and appreciate its roots. If so, it was an indication of the love they felt for future generations. The paintings portray a reverence for the animals that thrived in an environment that could appear hostile to anything living. Their art was a form of giving thanks to a "beast without a name." Hey, btw...I LOVE your intro/bumper music!

It’s jazz guys, better off to look at a lead sheet instead of a lyric sheet. Check out those jazz chords you won’t hear from any other so-called rock group, and this was early 70s. That’s a young up-and-coming John Klemmer on tenor, taking it out through the fade.

I loved Aja the most from the Dan until I heard The Royal Scam. Aja sounds (for a lack of a better word) "commercial" compared to the Scam. The Scam sounds raw, it has in-your-face great lyrics and music. Don't get me wrong, Aja is an absolute masterpiece, but I prefer The Royal Scam.....and yes, The Caves of Altamira is my favorite song in it, mankind's eternal drive to express art. Many thought of "the cavemen" as barbarian people, well look at their beyond beautiful art in the caves of Altamira Spain, those now-extinct majestic buffalos. They painted them on the wall 14,000 to 18,000 years ago. Just think about that: 12,000 to 16,000 years before Christ, 11,500 to 15,500 years before the Egyptian pyramids. Do you notice how the sax solo sounds like an ancient "tribe" horn call?

You wouldn't necessarily realize this because the guitar is so damn hard to extrapolate from this music but anything from Royal Scam, Aja, or Gaucho is hell for a guitarist unless you are well versed in old jazz chords.
