This is a favorite of Dan Heads. The flow of the complicated jazzy chord changes, the vocals, the guitar solo...a ten for me.

I think this one depends on how much you like jazz cuz this is pretty straight up , right down to that incredible guitar solo and those crazy changes he plays over and that smooth waltz groove that Porcaro is layin down... I'm a jazz player myself so this is easily one of my favorites

One of the absolute best Dan tunes. One of their few songs with a positive message; encouraging you to dare to take your best shot, it's worth the risk. The lyric is brilliant, possibly my favorite among all of their phenomenal writing. The great shuffle from Jeff Porcaro, Denny's astounding solo, the chord movement, etc. One of the things that I missed in later Dan records is their rock grittiness, but when they wanted to write straight-up jazz, like this one, they were untouchable.

@@SightAfterDark Apparently you didn't; either musically or lyrically. I would invite you to take some time with this singular tune; so that you can develop an appreciation of how unique it is, in its jazz-inspired approach and gorgeous manifestation, and its lyric as one that approaches the greatness of Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, etc.

Jazz Waltz. I don't know what the lyrics are about. Jeff Porcaro on drums. Lead guitar by original Steely Dan guitarist Denny Dias (who also plays the main guitar solos on the track 'Aja').

It's funny to hear you blow this tune off as not one of your favorites. From the vince guaraldi piano chords to Jeff Porcaro's jazz licks and Denny Diaz's amazing jazz guitar solos, this is a masterpiece. Give it a few dozen more listens and see how it rolls.

I think the lyrics can be interpreted from the point of view of somebody discovering jazz and going to the clubs for the first time and seeing those bebop legends, like the way Fagen & Becker did in NYC when they were growing up.

The great Denny Diaz. One of the best "takes" is the playback where you can hear Don reacting to it while mixing, etc. This is more of a real jazz tune that a lot of the other Steely Dan stuff.

In ancient times, teeth as well as knucklebones were used as dice. "Throw[ing] out [one's] gold teeth" = risking all one has, but caring not about loss. It also alludes to an old Chinese fortune-telling method, akin to the I-Ching, using the soothsayer's own gold teeth.

The cool part is that DF can be heard apparently reacting to hearing the Dias solo for the first time. Compared to other music it's a 15 out of 10 but we get so spoiled with SD because almost everything they do puts most other music to shame. They are simply the very best there is. I love this song and it should be the opener in their set list for live performances.

It took me 40 years to “get” how pretty this song is, musically. I still have no clue what literal meaning the lyrics have; I suspect none. They are there to be musical and put pictures in your head, like another instrument. Make up your own story to go with the images. That was the abstract lyric style Bob Dylan pioneered in his greatest creative period of 1964-1970. Becker said in an interview that Dylan was a major influence on their writing. That is true of every pop/rock songwriter since 1970, whether they realize it or not.
@SightAfterDark

@kurtjohnson3917

This is not an abstract lyric. It's one of the Dan's rare positive messages. It's a beautiful lyric, encouraging the listener to believe in him/herself, and take the risk of taking a shot at what might inspire them. It juxtaposes the people who actually take that risk "Who are these children who scheme and run wild; who speak with their wings and the way that they smile?" ..compared to those who don't : "Why do you tremble each time they ride by?". Then, "Who are these strangers who pass through the door, who cover your action and go you one more'?

Such a great tune! I call this one “Aja Junior” because the sound of this track was definitely going in the direction of where they ended up on Aja, except they took a fantastic diversion with the Royal Scam album before they finally “went there” full on. I love the lyrics on this tune. I almost get a sense that they’re talking about some type of futuristic hippie cult. Definitely a different type of subject matter from the lyrics in their other stuff.
