The Steens Mountain Wilderness lies within one of the most remote regions within the lower 48. Sparsely populated with few roads, the desert area where Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon all come together is a special place to ride and explore. The Steens area stands tall here.
The wide open landscapes and a contrasting geography of dried lakebeds and glacial valleys are reason enough to make this a destination ride. But it's the history that catches you and draws you in. It's palpable here. It's a place where pioneers, old and new, have come to make their mark and earn their fortunes. We do our best to get off the beaten-path and explore, meeting interesting people and hearing their stories.
We had a once in a lifetime experience with a heard of Mustangs too, making the Steens an adventure we will never forget! So, come along!

Thank you! Is this a place you’ve traveled to? I think when I visit again, will definitely try to stay at the old hotel. I think it only has 8 rooms-like going back in time! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch!

Thank you Charles! I really appreciate your kind words. I love exploring this region and although I’ve lived around here my entire life, I’m constantly discovering something new. This summer my brother and I are going to ride the abandoned section of the transcontinental railroad north of the great salt lake, from Wells to almost Ogden. I’m really looking forward to this ride!

Great video John! The colors were amazing. I’ve been through that area several times and it never gets old. One of my first rides was to do the Steen Mountain Loop. Got there in early June only to find the road not open. Stayed at the French Glen Hotel. Like going back in time 150 yrs. Just realized I’ve already seen this. It’s just as good the 2nd time!

Happy Fathers Day, David! What a great thing to share with your son! Probably July before it’s fully open? You’re the third rider I know of that’s attempted the loop but not been able to complete it because it was still seasonally closed. Crazy! Super glad you enjoyed it!

Great job guys on the documenting your trip. A group of us went down there a few years back. we stayed at the Frenchglen Inn, it was a fantastic place. That's the year we had a heavy snow and up at the gate there was still five feet of snow at the end of June. So unfortunately we didn't get to go all the way over. We did ride down to Fields Station for lunch, got some fuel rode the Alvarod desert we also stopped by the Diamond Ranch and that was pretty interesting, then continued on to the round Barn and back to frenchglen Inn
@johnhgarrett
@johnhgarrett Год назад
Thanks Gary! How was the Inn and the food? Would you do that again? I really want to go back and do the ride again, this time when the loop is open, but if I do, the old Inn looked pretty cool. I’m sure it’s a bit primitive by modern standards, but that’s okay! My brother and I just did the Transcontinental Railroad National Historic Byway just two weeks ago. I’ll have a video on that one coming out soon. But, talking about snow, Wells, NV (where we essentially started) is at the base of the Ruby Mountains. Holy crap there’s a ton of snow in the Ruby’s! There is a mountain town called Lamoile (sp?) we want to ride to not far from there-doubt that it happens this year! Thanks for watching the Video Gary! Cheers!

Oh man, you caught me! We did the ride in early June last year. Early enough that not everything had turned brown-and as you could see, the passes were still closed. But…I guess I might have adjusted color a bit? Lol. I think you live in CA don’t you? I really enjoy your videos! I feel badly that I don’t comment more often….. just watched your ride into WY… can’t believe you did that solo. John

Thanks John! I’ve wanted to do the Steens Loop for a long time. Stayed at the French Glen Hotel a few years back but it was May and the road was still closed. Went through Fields and the Alvord a few years back on a great trip. Looking forward to watching your Owyhee River video. You have a nice easy style. Great to watch. Keep ‘em coming. 👍
@johnhgarrett
@johnhgarrett 2 года назад
I really appreciate you saying that about my videos. I think that’s why I like yours as well, but you’re doing a lot more of them-and a lot more ambitious rides than I have been able to do lately. I’ve not done a solo ride of any length but I think that would be a really great way to recharge-so much time to reflect! I told my brother the next time we visit the Steens again that we need to book a room at the hotel in Frenchglen. I’m sure that’s a journey back in time. Looking forward to your next vid, too! Where are you headed next?
@seisamigos397
@seisamigos397 2 года назад
My friend John and I are headed to lava beds National Monument then southern Oregon for some off road and camping Mid May if the weather cooperates. You and your brother would really enjoy the French Glen Hotel. As I recall they had like 5 rooms with the bathroom down the hall. Food was outstanding! And it is like stepping back in time! 👌
