In this video, you will learn some practical tips on how to nail your check ride but also how to fly the basic flight maneuver, Steep Turns. This is not a comprehensive steep turn video but rather the thoughts I was having coming out of a recent pre-solo phase check. I believe that any turn in an airplane is a basic flight maneuver and that all pilots should know how to see the sight pictures and adjust accordingly. I hope you benefit from this video on some of the finer points of flying Steep Turns. Please enjoy!

Steep turns are fun. :-) They were an important milestone in my flight training. I had been timid with the flight controls, until one day I found myself whipping the Cherokee around like it was a Spitfire. My instructor noticed, and told me "whatever you had for breakfast, eat more!"

My instructor keeps telling me not to whip it and to get a smooth normal roll-in.

Thanks, new student pilot, good timing as it is reinforcing what I was doing last week. Though it was a bit windy and I was having difficulty maintaining altitude, constantly pulling and pushing around the 360.

Just did my first steep turns in the 172 today with my CFI. I hit the wake after being shown how to do the maneuver, loved the feeling! Keeping the altitude centered was a challenge at first but then I got it!

Hi Jason, Your thoughts on top rudder in regard to steep turns pls.
@TheFinerPoints
@TheFinerPoints 4 года назад
Willo you shouldn’t need rudder in a steel turn apart from that requires to roll into or out of the bank. And then the amount depends on how fast you roll. Too rudder is something I’d use to describe an uncoordinated condition such as a forward slip
@jaywillelec

@@TheFinerPoints interesting, my cfi encourages a combination of back pressure and top rudder to hold the sight picture whilst in a steep turn.

Willo interesting. I’d like to ask him (her?) why. The only reason I can think of is perhaps to counter the over banking tendency?

I am curious. about steep turns. When the international fatal accident rate shows that most were in the traffic pattern and on base to final, why aren't steep turns taught with flaps extended? That would seem practical to familiarize a student as to what they might encounter on that famous base to final overshoot. Standing by.

When I learned to fly in 1973 steep turns were 60 degree bank. When did it change to 45 degrees?
@TheFinerPoints
@TheFinerPoints 4 года назад
It's 60 on the commercial I believe but only 45 for the private. Not sure when it changed but it's been that way for a long time now
@StephenLairdSML

The Finer Points commercial is actually 50! Can’t speak to whether or not private changed though, it’s been 45 and 50 as long as I know.

I was thinking the same thing "oh it's 60 here in Canada." Nope. 45 now for commercial and private. Not sure when it changed

@@TheFinerPoints I was doing some research and found a 1975 Commercial Test Guide and it said a Steep turn was greater than 50 deg. Plus or Minus 100 feet. Couldn't find any specific degree for private pilot because I didn't have a ppl test guide. My instructor was a KC-135 pilot and maybe the Air Force taught 60 degrees. When I was flight instructing in the 70s I had my students do 60 degrees too.
@niepowiem5894
@niepowiem5894 4 года назад
I think 60 is already a spiral, I had a few on my PPL training and I was loosing alt with full backpressure and throttle. We were explicitly flying to the area where the ceiling was higher to be able to execute it safely, same as for the spins.

How much should the power be for a 45* bank? Full or the usual 21-23 hundred RPM?
@TheFinerPoints
@TheFinerPoints 4 года назад
I hesitate to say because there are so many variables. Air density, weight, and altitude are going to change that. Experiment with it and note the exact setting that works for you where you fly
@LoxosM

I did yesterday the steep turn flight and my instructor told me to add 150/200rpm to have constant speed. Starting at 2200 rpm and then adding. I fly a 172M

What are your thoughts about using trim in a steep turn?
@Maximka1100
@Maximka1100 4 года назад
Kyle Buckle , I always use trim for steep turns. It works great and and you don’t have to keep that back pressure for entire turn. Just remember to re-trim after maneuver is completed.
@karlsandin4515
@karlsandin4515 4 года назад
A little nose up and 50-100 rpm more of power after the entry is perfect
@hollyfoxThe
@hollyfoxThe 3 года назад
My CFI tells me to take one turn from top of the wheel to the bottom. Then when I roll out I know how much trim to get rid of. Seems to work well, but you will still have some back pressure just not as much.

I'm 6'5" and flying a Grumman Traveler. The horizon doesn't cut the dash or cowling during steep turns making it harder to hit and hold a reference. Ideas?
@TheFinerPoints
@TheFinerPoints 4 года назад
That's rough but if you have to "measure" distance with your eyes (that is, hold the horizon some unmarked distance above the dash) it's best to do it where it's closest. So in a left hand turn, look on the top right of the dash for your sight picture. It's where the horizon "would have" cut the dash if the dash was higher or longer. Does that make sense?
@navion426flying3

How come nobody talks about accelerated stalls during steep turn training? This isn't simply about bank, altitude, and sight pictures. This is also about safety. Proper rudder usage into and out of the turn, and proper airspeed is critical for safely performing the maneuver. We need to teach students these things, not just the mechanics of it. Students need to understand why its dangerous.
@TheFinerPoints
@TheFinerPoints 4 года назад
Hi David. I totally agree. Halfway through this video I realized it was not going to be a comprehensive view of the Steep Turn. Still I felt there was a lot of learning in here and the focus on sight picture was appealing. I'm hoping that is what really sticks with people after they watch. I do agree with you. I always teach accelerated stalls. I get to that in a recent video called "Turning Stalls Can Go Bad". It still deserves more attention and I'll be thinking about that. Thanks.

Dumb question, a steep turn is 360 degrees correct? Not 720?
@JohnBaleshiski
@JohnBaleshiski 4 года назад
Yes, 45 degree bank +- 5 degrees, +- 100 feet altitude, 360 degree turn rolling out on the same heading +- 10 degrees, and +-10 knots airspeed. In my training, we did right and left right after each other without delay.
@TheFinerPoints
@TheFinerPoints 4 года назад
Yes, but the ACS says "one in each direction as specified by the examiner" so usually we practice one to the left, one to the right

@Valantir
@Valantir 4 года назад
Canada has the same limits but instead of a 360 each way. It's a 180 transition directly to the opposite turn to roll out on original heading making you use that coordinated rudder control to not let the nose waver.

Two 90 degree clearing turns still leaves a blind area.
@holyteejful
@holyteejful 4 года назад
Not if you look out of left and right windows (it’s assumed u clear 90 both sides from original bearing ) - looking out of the left and right windows during and after each 90 turn, will get you 360 visual clear ...a full 180 cld work too , doing your maneuvers 180 of original bearing , instead of turning back to original bearing
