Himbrecht Hahaha you nailed it :D +Di Vergent So what, he's not allowed to praise him by comparing him to Da Vinci unless he's talented in equal amount of disciples or more? I say every time someone is ridiculously talented in any single area it's enough to praise him by comparing him to anyone. Take your pick. And Stimming IS ridiculously talented, if your ears would be perceptive enough to be able to register that, you wouldn't be writing what you wrote.

Thank you very much FMM for this brilliant studio session. It once again gave very interesting insights. I was especially impressed by Martin's producing skills. What a great musician and producer. However, it leaves me with two questions concerning the audio signal path. Maybe someone knows the answer to them: 1. Why the audio interface (a cheap RME Multiface II)? If I understood Martin correctly he connected the analogue synths/drum machines (via the patchbay) to the inputs of the audio interface and from there to the main inputs of the SSL X Desk (using the mytek AD/DA converter seperatly, namely in the auxiliary inputs for which the X Desk provides, giving a total of 16 ins and outs). Why did he not connect the outputs of the synths (the patchbay respectively) directly to the X Desk without the multiface II stopover? I assume that his studio monitors (very nice ones indeed!) are connected to the SSL X Desk, which therefore presumably already provides a built-in audio interface. Hence, the Multiface II would be unnecessary also from this point of view. Moreover, connecting the audio interface to the computer would be a weak link in the audio signal path and render the AD/DA converters needless. 2. Why the AD-converter (in addition to the other mytek AD/DA converter) at the very end of the audio signal path? If I understood Martin correctly he uses the mytek AD/DA converter to send audio back and forth between the computer and the SSL Desk meanwhile already using the analogue compressors, EQs and pre-amps for mixing purposes. Hence, the only explanation left might be that the compressors, etc. might be used again for mastering purposes. Otherweise there would be no need for a seperate AD-converter at the end, because all the audio recordet to the DAW already is of the very best quality and got only fed into the computer via the AD/DA converter.

"Cubase is like white paper, Logic is like lines, Ableton like squares"? For me its the oposite. 10 years Cubase followed by 10 years of Ableton Live here. I ended up hating Cubase menu madness, and Live was my imspirational workflow rescue. The "squares" (I guess he means session view) is a future you are free to use, in ADITION to its regular linear sequencer. You can use both at the same time. I use it mostly as a sample or midi sketchpad/container which I drag and drop from into its linear aranger. Cubase, Logic, ProTools, Digital Performer, these are the classic linear sequencers. Ableton, lately followed by Bitwig, to me, is the contemporary and future standard of minimal functional yet flexible workflow, and it has bin so for quiet some time. Since Live 4. Anyway.. He is a decent producer. Nice gear. Reminds me a little of Minilogue.

MAN... A CINTIQ 27QHD would help me if I do this. That's a very small screen. He must have super 20/20 vision A very artistic way to work on Cubase... Seams like he likes drawing or painting... TIP for FM: It would be so much better to shoot these videos with real video cams to avoid so much out of focus. You can still shoot at film speed but the focusing would be so much better and consistent... (Panasonic AG-AC90A) Thanks for your Steinberg Series..

Hi Phiipp. All you need to do is rout the output of the track your affecting with the Freeze plugin to a separate audio track and record enable the audio track. Then while its recording have at it with the effects! I'm actually using Logic but the process should be the same in Cubase. Hope this helps!

Christopher Malhiot Hey Christoph, thanks for your reply :) Actually you are definitely right but i don´t know how it is done with Cubase. I tried it for hours yesterday. Maybe he is sending it out to his outboard mixer and then sending it in again from the mixer on a new track in cubase which he is recording. I hope someone can lift the secret!

Yamaha/Steinberg discontinued selling the entire CMC range late last year. Try eBay if you are really interested. I have them all, but wouldn't recommend them. They still work with Cubase 8 Pro, but at this point you'd have to worry that (since there is no more software development on them) that they will start losing compatibility with future Cubase releases. The fader packs are not worth the money IMHO. The transport and Quick Controller are the ones I use the most.

Thiago Ruas What you are referring to is a maintenance update to support latest windows and Mac OSX operating systems. It does not include any new functionality. The risk of buying into this platform is that it will eventually fall behind supporting future versions of Cubase/Nuendo. It's currently working fine with Cubase8Pro 8

@memopadhd7703
@memopadhd7703 9 лет назад
To be honest I'm not quite convinced by this approach: the small screen and the fact your hand cover 1/3 of it make difficult to tweak a synth or grasp the entire area of channel meters while mixing IMO. Nowadays decent USB mouse are precise enough and movement parameters are tunable. Anyway whatever works for your workflow is good. Just my two cents
@user-ek1yr9tp2w
@user-ek1yr9tp2w 9 лет назад
His problem with the mouse wasnt its imprecision or impracticality, he's stated before that he just feels that working with the pen is better for him because it allows you to be more hands on and is 'more musical' rather than just pointing and clicking with a mouse. To each their own I guess.

Again Germans know their electronic music. Californians play the sweetest guitar, but they should stop their EDM...Techno is a German, House is a Frensh, drumandbass an English speciality!

@joostc4750
@joostc4750 3 года назад
You're making a common mistake there. Contemporary EDM is not a musical genre, it's a cynical lifestyle marketing strategy. More surprisingly, it's not an American invention, whereas (genuine) techno and house actually do come from the States. (The canon is full of US pioneers like Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Daniel Bell, Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin, Mike Banks, etc etc. ) I agree that the mainstream EDM scene is next-level nauseating, but just like German techno grew from imported seeds, so did American EDM. That cheesy trance sound, for instance, it's a Dutch thing really ((Tiesto, Hardwell, Martin Garrix, Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten), same with big room house (Afrojack, Nicky Romero, Fedde le Grand,) and to a lesser extend the shitty sounds of happy hardcore and pop house or whatever you call that hybrid of electronic sounds, cheesy lyrics and verse chorus verse structure. Other than the music itself, the Dutch are also the ones who turned rave culture into the profit focused entertainment industry that took the US by storm. ID&T, Dance Valley, Sensation etc all had been around for a decade or longer before hitting the jackpot in the US. The reason it works so well in the States might be that there's a huge crowd there with money to burn, a culture of worshipping unmerited fame and a taste for hyped entertainment and saccharine artificiality, but the Americans didn't recognise that money tree before the Dutch demonstrated how to shake it. Full disclosure: I'm Dutch myself and not too proud of my country being so good at mercilessly exploiting something that is dear to me. We've been doing this kind of thing for centuries (google "slave trade", "amsterdam cocaine factory", "limited liability multinational", "corporate branding", "stock exchange", "foreign direct investment ", "modern capitalism", "investment banking", "short selling" to name just a few examples of Dutch inventions where a shitload of money is made from out of nowhere or from selling questionable services and products. Then again, our tiny country has quite limited natural resources, it's 5 metres under sea level and stuck between Germany, France and England. You don't have to study Darwinism to understand that moral tenacity is not really in our DNA.
