Steinberger Spirit bridge change and set up - partial video record

Apologies for including Rory Stewart and Alistair Campbell's podcast in the background... and for a few minutes of unfocused, un-framed video at one point.
This is only a partial video - showing a couple of stages of the work I did on Bob's Steinberger Spirit headless guitar. After seeing the work I'd done on Lawrence's Hohner G3, Bob asked if I could do similar with his Steinberger. He wanted the old bridge removed, cavity filled in and the same inexpensive Chinese headless bridge fitting for a reliable, stable-tuning hard-tail. This video shows me stripping down the Steinberger to its constituent parts, followed by dismantling and greasing the parts of the new bridge and then locating and fitting the bridge. Next I show some of the set up process but that's where this video ends. I don't show the HOURS of scraping and sanding to get the guitar down to plain wood, the TruOiling and finishing process or the refitting of the pickups and re-wiring. In this case one of the original components was giving trouble so I ended up replacing them with better quality parts and re-wiring from scratch. This is often a much simpler solution than trying to locate the source of the problem in an old, cheap wiring loom.

Before you tune all the strings up to pitch, you need to lock the bridge in its neutral position first using the little lever near the master tune knob, otherwise tuning one string will automatically detune the others.

The Spirit is made at the Gibson/Epiphone China factory. Gibson bought them out a while back. They are made fairly well but the middle pick-up is a joke. I can understand why some don't like the bridge. Since I use a strap even while sitting the tuner position does not bother me as I wear my guitar high. I always lock my bridge before removing the strings. Takes less turning and makes restringing easy whilst retaining tremolo spring equilibrium as long as you use the same strings/gauge. Guess that doesn't matter if you're removing the tremolo. On my Spirit I have also installed thrust washers on the notoriously stiff tuners and replaced the headstock with one that accepts single ball as well as double ball end strings. Also, a smidge of 3 in 1 oil using a Q-tip or toothpick or grease on threads and pivot points as I see you use works wonders. If the bridge is set correctly [perfectly flat or perpendicular] it performs about as well as a Floyd albeit with a much less pronounced flutter capability but with the advantage of running it locked which makes broken string changes a snap unlike a Floyd which will throw all strings out of tune if you lose one. At least the other strings stay in tune on a locked Spirit.

Thanks for that 'insider info' on the Spirit bridge... I've got one here that I keep avoiding using (based on the experience of its original owner....) but your tips make me think 'maybe I should bring it back into action' :)

@@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars The R-trem is a good bridge with amazingly stable tuning. The materials don't survive abuse, especially the base where the posts screw into. It can last for a really, really long time, so the design is good, but there are a lot of bad examples out there from wear and accidents.

im going to use the patent KD fixed bridge on my spirit that's a lightweight build, the R-trem is 1.5 lbs. That's a lot if you want a sub 4lb guitar.

@@womplestilskin Thanks for that insight. I've still got the bridge from the Hohner GT3 in my spares... I keep thinking 'shall I use it on THIS build..?' or '...on THAT build?'... and each time I revert to the cheaper Chinese one!

@@womplestilskin Yes... agree with you. I also like the fact that you can put the KD bridge on just about ANY shape / style of body and just chop off the headstock :D

In my opinion, it's ugly and over complex. Despite being Bowie's guitar of choice, post 1990, the future's looking grim, in a lot of ways.

There are aftermarket string locks so you don't need double ball end strings. I use one and my Spirit is a decent travel axe, though the trem really is terrible. The pot metal that the spring braces against can break and you can then only use it as a hard tail.

My fine tuner just snapped and the E string is stuck in the slot with the top half of the fine tuners screw keeping clamped inside bridge :(😢

There is a tremolo MGR design 001, it's the reimagined r-trem with carbide and hardened steel. Handmade in canada, but only a few are still left for sale. $500 usd.
