mines 3 years old been dived to 90meters survived 2 motorbike crashes , been up countless mountains , months in freezing conditions , iv abused it shower with it on regularly (mostly) theyre tough as hell . the same ETA movements are used in breitling watches and others upwards of £2600 so how does steinhart do it ?
Just got the Ocean Vintage Military 39, which is exlusively made for Gnomon-Watches and was a limited production. Paid $600 due to VAT in total but still totally worth it and I love wearing it.
I just got my Steinhart OVM today...I made the decision a few weeks back based off this video along with the review on the Worn & Wound website. Great job with this video. All of the pics on the site and even this video don't do this justice. It has a great solid feel to it, and I'm thrilled with my purchase. For anyone interested. I think you can pre-order them again on their website. Keep up the great reviews, and thanks
the rolex 5517 was for royal navy special boat service , the strap could go over a wetsuit without being adjusted , the watch cost £15 . if you.lost one the navy took a £1 a week out your wage and gave you another 😂😂 awesome .if people knew then what they cost now ..
I just got my ocean vintage military today and i cant stop looking at it. It's such a beautiful watch. Planning to get the ocean forty four next time. Nice review my friend.
The best watch review I saw in a long time; great photos also. I own a Steinhart Ocean One ( the normal series) for over 2 years, they are good machines and very durable.
great review for helping me decide on which Steinhart to get. Also like the addition of the watch strap info at the end...it complements your review very nicely. Good job my friend.
nice review brotha. i think I know where my next paycheck is going now, that thing is gorgeous, I was already pretty sure I wanted one of these, but I wanted to see how smoothly that second hand sweeps around the dial. still pictures don't do it justice, awesome watch at an amazing price
I have the OVM 39, new from a Far East dealer, had a problem with rotor spinning when manual winding and trying to screw crown back in became very difficult, I sent it back to steinhart for a repair, got it back on Friday. It’s the same problem so that was a waste of time.
Paid $375 on ebay with ceramic bezel option from the ocean. I use the sharkband bracelet. The watch at that point doesent look homage anymor but very unique. Gains about 6 sec a day manageable.
Hey Texachris, The watch is powered by an ETA 2824-2 movement, which is a reliable workhorse automatic. We tend not to comment on the accuracy of these watches since the movement is purchased and installed by the brand, thus the accuracy does not necessarily reflect on them...But since you asked, I've experienced no noticeable issues with the accuracy for daily wear, or issues with the power reserve. -Zach
They are available on the Steinhart site again... check out the Steinhart site, they are available for pre-order. While they weren't very specific on when it would ship, it was well worth the wait.
Can you please also do a comparison video with the Squale 20 Atmos Militaire. ? They look very much alike and it will be interesting to see how they stack up.
Really like this watch is winging its way to me from Germany...can't wait for it to show up for it to join my Deep Blue, Omega and Seiko. Have a feeling this will become a watch of choice over the others!
Hey Zach, great review. Awesome footage and lighting. Really brings the watch out. What kind of camera did you use? You didn't mention the weight of the watch or accuracy of the movement. I take it this review was about the look and feel. I still enjoyed the review, thanks.
Love the look of this watch but I wish it was 40mm and with lugs that turned down a bit. Seems like most of the wrist shots I come across the lugs float way above and often beyond the wrist.
Agree Adam...nice watch and all that but the size and lug design is disappointing. That said, I'm considering buying one!. The construction overall is very good and aside from the aforementioned, it's great value for money compared to the crazy prices asked by Rolex
I’ve seen versions of this MK1 with the case back engraved with 660ft instead of 1000ft like yours. Is the one that the case back reads 660ft more desirable and worth more than the one with the 1000ft case back? I’ve checked eBay and they’re very rare than the 1000ft. Do You know? Thanks.
I gotta stop watching your reviews... you guys are gonna make me go broke! Just purchased the Orient Explorer due to your review. Now I MUST add this to my collection. always dreamed of Mil Sub. I'm not a fan of homage pieces usually but this looks really well done. Thanks for the excellent review as always!
It's because even though the case diameter is also 42mm, the lug-to-lug measurement on the SKX007 is shorter between 45-46mm. Many people like myself think that lug-to-lug is a more important measurement in determining if a watch will look right on wrist. I have a 42mm Steinhart Ocean Black DLC and a Seiko 6309-7040 that measures 44mm, but the Steinhart wears larger because of 50mm lug-to-lug measurement vs. 45 of the Seiko.
I can't decide between this and GMT Ocean 1 :/ This one is simple, has a heritage even it's coming from Rolex and has rare look if you compare to other divers in the market. GMT has date which can be handy, red GMT hour hand is really looks nice and dial has white color. I wish i can buy both I have budget only for 1. What do you think?
Zach in your opinion mechanical watches in this price range will last a lifetime in comparison to higher end brands. Such as Rolex, Omega, and Breitling?
Mil sub homage !!!! I like to think of mine as Omega inspired , the Omega did come first , and was used by the royal navy before the cheaper (at the time ) rolex milsub came along .. Rolex pah !
I have seen a lot of reviews on this watch, and is a pity that Steinhart didn´t release it with something, wich is to my mind, one of the most important things in all Submariner vintages models: and that is the strong curved and tall plexiglass. Why spend money in a sapphire glass, that does not follow the same shape the original watch that are you trying to "homage" does?... I don´t understand that, specially because this is a watch that you buy to enjoy, to use everyday, and not to worry if it get some scratches in the glass (even Steinhart could provide it with a replacement Plexiglass, so you dont´have to worry if you broke it). The other very important thing to me, about this model (the 42mm) is the bezel and how rough it looks (the coin edge), in comparison with the later 39 mm. Maybe the 39 mm is more accurate to the 5517 in that particular, but the shape of the bezel in this version I think is far superior and look really like a "Tool", and stands with that massage immediately: "this is a real Tool", that´s what that bezel is saying. And for both version, may be there´s a problem with size, was the 5517 in 40mm? I´m not sure... Regards and thank you for share it.
Nice color range on the video, the use of Rembrandt style light and color compliments the classic look of the watch. Like they say the difference between art and porn is the lighting :)
I cannot find one of these in stock anywhere! Anybody got one they want to get rid of? Badass watch. Nice to see Steinhart put a new spin on an old and awesome original that, in the event you could find one, would cost as much as a small house. Good day!
The no date Mil subs are the purest form of divers and your review was well done. I just ordered mine and praying to the watch gods that the 42mm some how plays bigger or heavier then a traditional sized 42mm. I have the planet ocean 45 mm omega and its a great watch but this watch has called me big time so im now in the famous waiting on news from Steinhart phase which goes from waiting to getting a email saying your watch is en route to wearing so COMEEEEEE on Steinhart make it make it ! =)
Steinhart is making very high quality watches. I know him personally, because he is a good friend of my dad. Steinhart told me that his watches have a higher quality than a rolex or a breitling because he uses better screws which are more expensive but he really wants to sell ultra high qualitiy watches. He also designed his own Geneva stripes with 18 lines. This is not normal, too because many other watches like Rolex etc. hasn´t as much Geneva stripes like the Steinharts does. That are not the only things which are better then other hiqh quality watches, but i am from Germany and my English is not that good :) Have fun with your Steinhart watch, I got the new STEINHART "MILITARY 42" and I like it very much. I really can recommend the STEINHART "MILITARY 42". I hope I did give you more information about the Steinhart watches with this comment, because many people don´t know how nice Steinhart watches are.
***** Steinhart, do not make their own in-house movements, they do not even make their own watches. The so called in house movement is an ETA base movement. Steinhart get their sub contractors in Jura to embellish a base ETA movement and then call it in house, its a joke really to call it in house, when Steinhart dont actually make watches let alone movements. Very few watchmakers still make their own in house movements. Rolex, Seiko, Citizen and Jager Le Coultre are some of the few left who still make their own movements. Steinhart only do the design work for their watches and in a number of cases that is based on others designs like Rolex, many of their watches therefore are just homages. Steinhart just market and sell their watches and as discussed, design them, they do not physically make them. They job the production work out to independent manufacturers in Jura who do the assembly work. Steinhart will pull a watch from the line occasionally and check QC to make sure its to their standards. Steinhart do not own any watch factories, or employ any watch makers as direct employees to assemble their watches.Very few watch companies are able to do everything these days other than as discussed Seiko, Rolex, Citizen & Jager. Steinhart only do the design and marketing, they get their independent partner, who is the watchmaker to do all the production and assembly using generic Swatch ETA or Valjoux movements.
+SERGEANTaim I wouldn't go so far to say they're higher quality man. Did you know Rolex makes their own type of steel for their watch cases just because it holds a polish better and longer than 316L steel? I'd say that's higher craftsmanship than screws.
+definitely not a rapist You need to do some more research, those guys listed as watchmakers dont make the watches, they are just involved in the design work. All the construction work is undertaken in Jura by Steinharts sub contractors.
David Crocker I have no idea. It's so out of place against the classic design of the watch. If the logo wasn't so horrific I would've picked it over the Steinhart any day because it's 40mm.
As a bigger guy I'm glad they made this 42mm instead of 40mm. I'm 6'3" and over 260lbs. Any 40mm watch on my wrist just looks silly. There are plenty of 40mm options out there. Excited to have a legit, well made and respected 42mm option. I can see how 42mm would be too big for some folks though. Cheers!
I've had this watch for 1 year and it's brilliant. A real shame there are Rolex wankers out there who cannot understand the coolness of this piece, even though it's an homage watch.
@@joekelly9369 good for you I have the Phoibos that is made in the same Chinese factory. Kept the Steinhart bracelet for the Phoibos but sold the watch. Got the other watch free because someone thought that the "swiss made" means something. Ha
Only reason for you to say anything. You could have just kept your mouth shut, but you just couldn't help yourself. It's called insecurity, perhaps mommy didn't give you enough to hugs. It could also be the fact that unlike a real man you judge your own self worth (which apparently isn't much) on the watch you wear.
Why not? SS case, ETA movement, 300m Water resistance, Sapphire crystal glass, it's a great watch. Oh but because people can't afford to spend $100,000 on an actual 5517....what a joke.
***** This isn't just "copying" the Submariner. This is an homage to a model that's no longer made, of which fewer than 1000 remain, and which sells for $100k. No one is trying to "pass this off" as a MilSub. There's a big difference between this and the $100 quartz Invitctas that copy a modern Rolex Submariner to a tee.
