I'm a little bit confused. The first time, in 2011, the Time Leap Machine didn't work, so they failed to save Mayuri and then everything happend, leading to the future. How does it work this time? Do they explain it in the VS?
The time leap machine not working is only in the anime. In the vn, Okabe arrives in 2036 through a completely different set of events and this occurs in one of the routes, which is separate from the final route that the anime tried to adapt. The problem with the adaptation however is that it tried to incorporate major events in every route into one final route at the cost of being a bit messy and having to come up with new plot points for them to make sense. But putting aside that, if we were to focus solely on the anime, we could come up with an in-universe explanation such as Okabe somehow gaining the knowledge to fix the machine along his journey, or Okabe time leaping to a time a little before the machine breaks (assuming it breaks and gets fixed shortly afterwards). However, we can't say for sure because again it is something the anime came up with.
@@nikokoro5862 Oh that kinda makes sense. I don't quite understand your 2nd assumption, but the 1st one is similar to what I tried to think about it, like Okabe somehow messed up the time line, changed it slightly when time leaping back to 2011. But still, that's not really convincing.
@@quanmai5759 The point is it's better not to think too much about it because it's something that the anime made up that is not from the source material and there's probably not a good explanation for it other than what the anime gave, which is pretty much nonexistent.

In terms of leaping back? Once he gets to the point where it wasn't fixed yet, Okabe helps build it (or encourages them to, but he likely knows what went wrong by the 1000th leap) leading to its completion, then he leaps back again and does it again until he gets to where he wants to be. Hence the "you finish the time machine, my being here is proof of that"
