TCM frequently telecasts "The Uninvited" on its cable channel throughout the year, especialy around Halloween. The Criterion Collection has an excellent version on DVD and Blue Ray versions.I recommend the Criterion DVD because it contains a booklet with excellent background information on the film, plus the original movie trailer.@@jsawoski
"The Uninvited" was the first serious attempt to portray the supernatural, or ghost story, to American audiences in 1944.Despite its primitive special effects, by our technology now, it still holds up pretty well, and is still one of the best ghost stories ever made.To really appreciate its impact on audiences then, and even today, you must see it in a darkened theater as I did at the Nuart Theater in West Los Angeles back in 1973.
It is so sad that an original studio recording of "Stella By Starlight " by Victor Young no longer exists.Only re-recordings by later conductors and orchestras.
I don't know of anywhere you can rent it. But you can buy it on either Ebay or Amazon, which is where I got my dvd from. It didn't cost much, I bought it a few years ago, but I think it was about $8.00.
I tried to watch this movie on RU-vid on TV, but first the quality was really bad, and second there was a man and woman who seemed to narrate it and talked alot and made alot of fun of the characters, etc. I turned it off and am watching it on my laptop.
