After Stellantis' poor 2nd quarter financials, CEO Tavares said if brands weren't profitable they'd be cut.
Chrysler wasn't named, but it's obvious that was one of the ones he was talking about. When you have 1 product and the company isn't sending you any new ones.... *sigh*.
I'm an optimist. I've seen Stellantis and their US brands as a "glass half full" with investment in product coming. A revitalization of Chrysler and Dodge!
And now, with one statement, Tavares has undercut 3.5 years of hope.

Let's face facts people, Chrysler has been dead since the "merger" between Daimler Benz and Chrysler. It's been a shell of itself since. Everything Iacoca did to save the company seems to be all for naught. I personally am a lifelong Mopar fan. My last "mopar" was a 2013 Chrysler 200 sedan, which I still own. I waqs looking to replace it at least 5 years ago with another "mopar" but found nothing worth buying form them. Fiat had them so screwed up I'm suprised it's lasted this long. Stelantis would unfortunately be putting the brand out of their misery. A sad day indeed if it actually happens.

I thought about that in the past but the problem is Chrysler has no legacy in successful luxury SUVs. Their attempt was the Aspen which failed miserably Not to mention that it failed despite being heavily discounted compared to the Lincoln and Cadillac versions. The problem also boils down to decades of discounting Chrysler makes it to where it cannot compete as a luxury brand. If you're spending say $100,000 on a luxury SUV, you have established models like the Escalade and navigator would you be willing to spend the same $100,000 on a model from Chrysler who has sold cheap models like the PT cruiser, Sebring convertible, Town and country / Pacifica minivans, and the The 300 which mined you came standard with cloth interior and was not allowed to have a hellcat nor the 392 for the longest time? Lincolns were nowhere near that downscale nor Cadillac. Outside of strong brand loyalty, they would have find a tremendous gap in the industry and fill it and be able to maintain it. While I understand that Jeep fans are outraged by the ridiculous pricing that's going on with the wranglers and other models that should not be so expensive, the Grand Wagoneer was sort of the first luxury SUV. It has the best capability of demanding such a price tag because there's a legacy look at the demand for the original models today as an example. The difference is, they should have sold an affordable truck based SUV on the same platform under Dodge using the Rams styling.

@@colinschmitz8297 So ironic that the arguably created the first crossover with the original Pacifica, but it didn't sell well and, instead of improving it, they just axed it, as always. If I recall, the main complaint was that it was underpowered.
@colinschmitz8297
@colinschmitz8297 Месяц назад
@@seed_drill7135 with due respect, I believe that first crossover is credited to the AMC Eagle. The Pacifica was a nice vehicle but the bottom line was it didn't sell. Some considered it to be too expensive. I thought it looked too much like a station wagon personally compared to a SUV. The goals that they had was roughly around 100,000 units and while the interior was very impressive they struggled to sell it at the price tag that they had for it. I would submit that's part of the reason why I'm not convinced that it would work under Chrysler. I wish it did but when they keep undercutting the luxury image to have more short-term sales, that is the price you pay. The Pacifica failed and the Aspen failed. Giving him a third chance after the brand has become almost dead would be a very big gamble versus going off the nostalgia of the Grand Wagoneer name.

With Chrysler, it's pretty obvious. They never announced a replacement for the 300. No teased concepts, nothing. To build something new requires time and money which would have to come from somewhere else. Dodge has the Durango on its way out and the Hornet which is a sales flop. The upcoming Charger EV is delayed due to electrical problems and I don't expect it or the i6 version to do great in a market where people loved the Hemi. Especially with the Mustang still offering a powerful V8 at a decent price. RAM has the worst sales figures out of all American Stellantis brands (26% drop compared to last year) and is probably among the brands Tavares was criticizing in terms of build quality. Jeep is most likely the brand that will live on, despite the poor sales compared to last year. They do need to work on their pricing, though. It's also the only American brand that Stellantis offers in Europe. That being said, the only 2 Stellantis brands that are doing well in the US this year are Fiat and Alfa Romeo.

Disgusting… I was really hoping on Stellantis but I could smell this ever since they killed the 300 and Challenger/Charger. In reality I think Peugeot only had the budget to restructure the Fiat side including Jeep/Ram, but not quite enough capital to sustain the restructuring of Dodge, Lancia, and Chrysler. It’s a shame because when Stellantis should’ve been making more generic cars to be shared across all brands they gave huge chunks of money to a few brands to make the most unecessary low volume niche cars while they let the other brands starve. Stellantis should at least give one billion dollars to Chrysler to help them get at least a couple new products. And they need to narrow down Jeep because it’s overstepping in Dodge and Chrysler territory. And get new leadership for Chrysler because that woman who’s CEO of Chrysler is just a sitting pig with no plan ahead on what to actually do to revive the plan. They keep saying Chrysler is the futuristic brand with the new technologies but so far there’s nothing from them futuristic and all the planned products (and there are only two of them) are planned to be released by 2025 and 2028! That’s too far ahead. Here’s what I’d do even as late as of now. Minivan goes to Dodge: Hornet and Grand Wagoneer, goes to Chrysler: Fiat Tipo goes to Dodge as a Neon: Jeep Commander goes to Dodge as a Journey , and rebadge the Hornet as a Caliber with serious price adjustment. So we would have Caliber, Journey, Neon, Grand Caravan, Durango, Challenger and Charger. That’s a full Dodge lineup out of nothing. Then Chrysler would have Pacifica, Aspen, and Airflow (rebadged Tonale for now). Boom! Chrysler and Dodge have product while we standby for new models. And new models in the pipeline would be: a new minivan for both Chrysler and Dodge, a Chrysler 300, a Chrysler Crossfire or halo car, a Dodge Caliber crossover, and a few other Dodge and Chrysler models to fill their lineups like even a Maserati super car for a future Dodge Viper. ISNT THIS WHAT STELLANTIS WHAT CREATED FOR?! Tavares just isn’t even trying.😫😫
@michelepontrelli910
@michelepontrelli910 Месяц назад
I 'd do this. Dodge lineup: include RAM in the range and turn the 1500 in to a full size SUV (Ramcharger), add two more smaller suvs as redesigned Jeep Gran Cherokee (Durango) and Compass/Tonale (Hornet) and making them cheaper but no changing only the badge like they have done. Basically Ford Expedition Explorer and Escape/Kuga rivals. Then turn the new Charger into a cabrio to put it as Mustang rival. Then redesign the new 4 doors charger to give It a new front end and name (Stratus) and make a sporty shooting brake/wagon version. We would have a fastback/shooting brake, a muscle car, suvs and pick up and maybe an entry level sedan/Hatch based on a redesigned Fiat Tipo (Dodge Neon) to go against Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, VW Jetta As Chrysler concern, I would turn the Jeeps into suv coupes/crossovers except one that will have 7 seats (a redesigned Jeep Gran Cherokee L), coupe suv versions of Gran Cherokee and Compass (Voyager, Aspen, Airflow). Then turn the new Charger coupe into a luxury gt and cabrio (Lebaron) like Cadillac Ciel. Basically a cheaper and less powerful Maserati Granturismo. Then a luxury version of the 4 Door Charger and shooting brake (cirrus), an E segment sedan (Imperial) like the Mercedes e class, BMW 5 series, Cadillac CTS, Lexus Es rival, (a cheaper Maserati Ghibli based). No more minivans. Chrysler Will be the premium comfortable brand of Stellantis (Mercedes, Lexus Genesis, Cadillac Lincoln rival) Alfa Romeo the premium sporty (BMW rival) and Lancia the premium all wheel drive one (audi rival). I will ax DS that has no history while Dodge (include RAM) as mainstream sporty like Ford Mazda or Honda

@@michelepontrelli910I like the idea. A Cabrio Charger is actually genius. So basically Dodge is mass market performance, Jeep is rugged, Ram is aka Dodge Trucks, Alfa Romeo is sporty luxury, Chrysler is comfort luxury, Lancia is AWD premium cars, and Maserati is the Ferrari of Fiat.

@@trainwreck420ish I’ve found in my experience as a mechanic for over a decade (I’ve worked on many many Porsches) that they were very reliable & easy to fix when they were air-cooled and analogue - they were basically a Volkswagen (and no I’m not saying that as an insult, I say it as a positive). However, ever since they’ve been water cooled, they’ve just become more and more like computers on wheels - electric this, digital that, computer chips everywhere, etc. If you were to go to the dealership and buy a brand new base model 911, I’m sure you’d be able to get a good 100K miles out of it without any problems. However, after that, or whatever the warranty period is, you’re just gonna start lighting money on fire, especially if it’s a Porsche that happens to be a 10/15/20 years old. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not the most troublesome cars on the planet (they give me less trouble than Audi, Maseratis, ALFA Romeo, Jaguars, etc), but they’re not quite the “forever cars” they used to be in the 80’s/90’s etc. I’m not saying they’re bad cars, I’ve driven them many times, they’re very fun and perform excellently, I’m just talking about reliability.

In the 90s he understood the market and gave the public stuff like the LH cars, the Neon, major upgrades to minivans, and even some fun stuff like the Viper and Prowler. The PT Cruiser was also the right car at the time. Since people are obsessed with trucks, they could tap the compact pickup market with some affordable low option competitor to Toyota Tacoma. Give it something other than grey or black interiors to choose from. Make the interiors look like real Chryslers, not dodges or plymouths. During the last four years automakers (and dealers) made a killing selling high priced models and ignoring the lower end models and trims. It seems like Stellantis bought into the idea that high pricing was here to stay but it's not panning out. One, pricing was bound to drop back to reality and two, if someone is going to pay a premium it isn't going to be for an unreliable vehicle or something like the Hornet that is not a good fit for the US market. Time and time again it's been proven that rebadging cars designed for Europe do not result in volume sales in the US. As for Chrysler, they need to roll out a full range of electrified vehicles (hybrid and EV) that have good build quality, nice interiors, and non-generic design. The lower end models should compete with Buick and go up from there. That's a lot of investment and I'm not sure if Stellantis could pull it off. The other option is to not try and instead stick with Jeep being the provider of a full range of SUVs and Dodge getting sporty models. I'm guessing they'll do the latter.

I knew just as soon stellantis formed, that the Chrysler brand was doomed, with Dodge not being far behind. Renault and Peugeot are the Grim Reapers of the automotive world. Even when they had their own Brands here in the states, they didn't last long due to poor reliability, poor build quality and even pricing. They damn near destroyed AMC which was intern bought out by Chrysler. Nissan used to be a great manufacturer until Renault got involved. And now, we are seeing them systematically dismantle the Chrysler Corporation brands. Fiat was no better, but at least they had brand offerings for the Dodge and Chrysler brands. Even though, not enough. Anytime Renault and Peugeot have gotten involved with any other Automotive manufacturer, quality and sales went right down the tube. I sure am going to miss Chrysler. And it should be a crime what stalantis is doing. The French and the Italian automakers don't know how to build cars for the American consumers. Nor, do they care. I miss the day when Americans were passionate about their Automotive brands. But those days are long long gone. Vehicles are now simply appliances and the American Consumer has no brand loyalty. And Renault and Peugeot are proof of just that

There were big plans for Alfa Romeo which never materilized. Now there are big plans for Lancia to put iconic nameplates like Delta and Aurelia on soulless Crossovers. Peugeot and Citroën were Motorsport and Innovation brands not too long ago. Now they only sell boring cars with boring engines. Unfortunately there are many reasons why the EV Charger won't work. Too expensive, too heavy, too slow, outdated EV-Technology in comparison to Tesla and the Chinese. Dodge was one of the top enthusiast brands! Now they sell an Italo-SUV and an ancient Durango. I really like(d) the previous FCA, now Stellantis conglomerate. Sad to see. Marchionne was a real car guys, Tavares doesn't care about cars and only sees the numbers. At the celebration of 125 years Opel a few weeks ago he made it look like Opel was still a german brand with "german engineering" which it clearly isn't. I really don't like the term legacy automakers. But I really fear that all these brands that we know and love will die within the next two decades. Stelantis put itself in the situation it's in. Chrysler had nothing to do with the company's current financial state. Stelantis made the mistake of increasing the costs of their vehicles (specifically Jeep and Ram) more so than any other domestic brand at a time of rising inflation and interest rates. Couple that with the fact that Stelantis as well as the other domestics all decided to produce high margin, hide-end models to up revenue/ This perfect storm has driven potential buyers out of the market. All of the domestics are in this boat, BUT Stelantis is in it deeper than the others given they drastically drove up the prices of their vehicles more than anyone else. They are now paying the price with significantly overstocked, high-priced vehicles no one is buying. Corporate greed is coming back to bite them in the ass. Tavares let this happen and the brown aromatic stuff has formally hit the fan. Unfortunately, Chrysler could be hitting the chopping block. However, you cant tell me that Maserati and Lacia are big production brands. They certainly would not have the sales volume as Ram or Jeep would have. It makes sense to cut those two brands loose. Chrysler has potential especially since in the pecking order as brands go, Stelantis could use a Buick competitor American brand. They just need to properly invest in the brand. Something they clearly have not done as of yet. The market is there IF Stelantis can do it correctly and put out a quality upscale brand that is not brand-engineered but uses existing platforms designed with the American buying public in mind. We can only hope!

My first thought on this is that my "one that got away" tales that don't involve Studebakers, some of which could be had for practically nothing even in the early '80s, involve Chryslers and Imperials. Not Dodges, not Plymouths. So I had a Chrysler Le Baron Turbo GTC convertible, and a Sebring coupe. I might be up for the new Charger Daytona, but I'd happily stretch things to the breaking point to own a New Yorker, properly sized (meaning with a few more inches more wheelbase than the Charger, and many more inches in length), and available in two and four door forms. I had and aunt and uncle who always drove Chryslers. First a Newport, then New Yorkers, and they tried it with a '80s Fifth Avenue, but after that, they went to Lincoln, and Town Cars. They ran a country club. The aunt in question was always a classy lady, and her husband always seemed prosperous. Let's blame Bob Eaton for all of what's happened to Chrysler over the years. You know the joke about the "merger of equals"? How do you pronounce Daimler-Chrysler? Daimler, the Chrysler is silent. The situation has never gotten any better. The disrespect of the Mopar brands has brought things to this point. Chrysler has been as mismanaged as Lancia has. There, you have what was a maker of luxury sedans, grand touring cars, beautiful coupes, and rally cars, and their only current product is a subcompact city car available as a electric car or a hybrid. It's well styled, and the top line interior is really nice in blue, but that this is the only model is as sad as the minivans being the only Chryslers. So color me as pi$$ed off as well. My question about Carlos Tavares is just how many brands he'll shut down or offload to the Chinese before stakeholders realize that he only knows how to cheapen something, and there are limits to how much of that you can do before it all falls apart.

A small, cheap, barebones car that's available in a variety of body styles. ...what ever happened to cars being available in multiple body styles, anyway? What's the last non-luxury car to be sold in America as a sedan, coupe and wagon at the same time? Maybe the Subaru Impreza or Honda Accord?

I wouldn’t even have Chrysler compete with Buick, mainly because Buick in itself doesn’t have an inpiring lineup. Chrysler should be revived as a competitor to Acura if it were to compete with anyone.

I'd love for them to bring out an electric PT Cruiser, or something equally avant-garde, to make things fun, and interesting - but, I get the impression that Stellantis would rather just pump out more cookie-cutter SUVs, under a million different brands.

I have come to the firm conclusion that manufacturers, for all their profits, aren't having "fun" anymore. Where's the HHR, PT Cruiser, anything with real personality?

@AllCarswithJon Yup, it says a lot, that the most daring/charming designs, lately, have been the Honda E, and Hyundai Grandeur, if you discount that stupid cheese wedge, from the House of Elon, that doesn't seem to do anything very well. Everyone is basically stuck on a cycle of making dreary Qashqai clones, rather than even trying to do interesting stuff, like the Multipla (looked like a frog, but at least it was unique), the New Edge Focus (still one of the best-looking Fords, even today!), Smart ForTwo, the PT Cruiser, or the Nissan Cube. Reminds me, that Nissan have also become an incredibly boring company, as of late, that basically makes the same vehicle, in different lengths, with extremely fugly designs, and recycled Renault parts, rather than trying to push boundaries, or make something for everyone. (Why's there not going to be a Micra EV, for instance? That would sell like hotcakes, in the UK, with folks who want a cheap, reliable bubble car)...

If consolidation leads to better, more competitive products, then so be it. It is sad, but could end up with better products in the future.

I would not be surprised if this image of Chrysler Dodge likely to disappear is being carefully crafted by Carlos T for the specific reason to boost sales. How so? Well I think they might well suddenly announce some attractive incentives on the existing inventory and then there will be a rush of people to buy theses vehicles thinking if they are going to disappear and "I'd better get one while I can". This will make the dealers happy and give Stellantis USA some always welcome capital. Following that binge buying will be a brand new flashy/slick/advanced new ev/hybrid sedan/suv - whatever under the Chrysler/Dodge brand that will compete out there with GM/Ford/VW/Toyota. Then again I could be wrong - we will see.

Its been over for Chrysler since Fiat bought them when they went bankrupt for the second time. Ford is the ONLY domestic automaker to have never gone bankrupt.

I really don't understand their NEED to have each brand have such a "one thing only" image. For example, Dodge only being a Performance brand. Ford makes a small crossover in the Escape, and also a 800hp Mustang under the same brand. Same for Chevy. Dodge needs to go bring RAM back in for the trucks, and go back to being affordable vehicles and competing for volume sales against Ford, Chevy, Hyundai, Toyota etc etc- with some performance options / models. They HAD to make the Hornet performance, so it has too much HP and $$$ for anyone to care about it. Secondly, I don't understand the lack of product. Well, I guess I do. When you shoehorn a brand NEEDING a specific type of vehicle, then you limit your options. Just with Jeep alone, they have the vehicles, platforms and engines to serve all 3 brands (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep). I think rebadges are short term fixes and aren't solutions, but at least they'd have product for Chrysler and Dodge. Rebadge the Compass for both Dodge and Chrysler, you can do the same for the Hornet (make it normal for Dodge, luxury for Chrysler), do the same for the Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee L, Durango, Pacifica...now all the sudden each brand has vehicles competing in each segment at various images and pricepoints. This will make them some money to develop new vehicles for each brand. I truly don't understand why they'd rather leave Chrysler with 1 product (in a dying segment), and for the longest time leave Dodge with the Challenger and Charger, aging Durango. Their newest products are a failing Hornet (because its too fast and expensive), and a new coupe and sedan in the Charger that are also in dying segments. GM was known for rebadges in the 80s and 90s, to a fault, but at least it got them by, and had vehicles to offer the public. This isn't even considering all the other car brands under Stellantis they can use to do the same.

Chrysler has needed new platforms like say an suv I've advocated for like ever. But Daimler, fiat and now Stallantis didn't/don't seem to want to invest in to doing that thus making for circular logic. They kept the 300 around for a very, very long time. Yet they probably still could be selling them today. But Chrysler needed new for a very long time now and I fear the name plate will soon lose relevance and what a shame that is. They could have a Buick crusher and yet don't. It's sad to see. I would have thought Chrysler as a name plate would have outlived Dodge even perhaps. Definitely not these days. It's all but dead. What's really hurt the industry as a whole is this irrational investment in to EVs, as if that didn't have obvious problems. Who knew the general public would have such little interest in paying more for such a limiting vehicle? Outside of government forcing the public in to going electric, I don't see how this will work itself out any time soon. People familiar with my comments will note I was doubtful of such investments early on. There's just no way and the better, far more practical investment at this time would be in to hybrids. Toyota has a leg up on everyone else for that reason. I think hybrids are our future until some technological advancement comes along. EV technology just isn't practical for many. Definitely not affordable. Until we can get over that hump I think hybrids are the way to go for most. Even many early adopters of the EV bandwagon are learning this the hard way.

Jon, I think we all foresaw Stellantis failing epically. If they let Chrysler drop to one model & not even a vapour-ware replacement is flagged, you're likelyright. Tbh, my heart broke long ago as first Triumph et al, then Rover, died from neglect. If they keep Chrysler, yeah, expect a Citroen C6. _ps: Tavares is just another CEO mate, think Carlos Ghosn. Expect nothing & you won't be let down. Thanks Jon._
