In early 2019, the Italian-American Conglomerate Fiat Chrysler Automobiles sought a merger with French automaker PSA Group to create one of the biggest electric vehicle companies. The merger, officially agreed in December 2019, was to create the world's fourth-largest automaker behind Volkswagen, Toyota, and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.
