Let's take a look at Distant Worlds 2 and how it stacks up against the grand daddy of them all, Stellaris.
Loner Strategy Games (lonerstrategygames.com) is a channel and a website dedicated to strategy games. I try to include war games, simulation games, oldies and space strategy games, but to be honest I primarily focus on space strategy games simply because that's my favorite kind of game.
By the way, if you think all you see on this channel are favorable reviews, you’re right! If I don’t like a game, I don’t spend the time to play it and make a video about it. I usually know after about 5 minutes whether I’m going to like a game or not, so why spend the time playing and writing about something I don’t like, when I can enjoy learning a new game and creating a video about that instead? So, if you see a game on this channel, the chances are almost 100% that I like it.

Distant Worlds 2 is for me is the new King of Space 4X. Stellaris feels dated now compared to DW2. I love the fact you can automate what you find tedious to do and focus on the things you do want to do like colonize, engage in warfare and develop your economy. Battles are better in Distant Worlds 2 and In terms of Scale Stellaris is tiny compared to DW2. In Stellaris ships travel across small systems in mere seconds. In Distant worlds 2 you need hyperdrive to travel within your own solar system and systems are HUGE. Distant Worlds 2 feels like the older brother to Stellaris. All it needs is more content and the gap between these games will widen

The automation is truly one of the areas where DW2 stand out versus other games. Like we previously discussed, DW2 is a really great game but it still hasn't overcome Stellaris as my favorite game. Additional content would help but I'm more of an "instant gratification" kind of guy. I like exploring those systems in Stellaris early in the game but it is getting repetitive. I'll be giving this game some more playing time soon, and maybe make some more videos about it.

It is really hard to look at stellaris unmodded. Mods completely change stellaris, for example my current game has over 15,000 star systems in it. You can also automate pretty much everything in game including research, planet management, budgets for them, leaders etc etc. But then again I also have nearly 6,000 hours in stellaris so prob had mroe time than most to add flavor to my base game via mods but food for thought. Never played DW2 but was looking into it :D

What mods do you have?

1 place stellaris outshine distant worlds 2 is roleplay. And while you say scale is tiny in stellaris, infact it is the same scale. 1,000 stars. In stellaris you can also progress in many different ways, psionics, robotics, genetics. There is a bit more control and gameplay there. Stellaris does feel more simple, and I agree that it feels smaller, but its not actually smaller in scale. In fact, if you consider certain mods like gigastructural engineering, which is basically officially supported, then you see that the hypercivillization you can create in stellaris dwarf the scale of distant worlds 2. My birch world alone has more population than my entire distant worlds 2 civilization. However, in distant worlds 2, I can see the movement of resources, the movement of populations, down to the mining drone getting sent to the asteroids or planets. If some of the roleplay, like the council and political factions were implemented, as well as more detailed diplomacy, a galactic council, crisis, etc. then it will surpass stellaris. Right now, I think its offers a fresh, different take. Its more realistic than stellaris in many ways.

How do these two games compare? I take a look at things like game setup, economic systems and the fun factor for each game. To make it a little more fair I "dumbed down" Stellaris by turning of all the DLCs since it's a much more mature game than DW2. Which one do you like better?

subtle flex of your computer: there are no orange borders around the number of stars. anyway, distant worlds allow you to automate everything, which doesnt exist in stellaris. automating everything, at least at first allows you to learn how the game works, and its useful as roleplaying, and, its very realistic. you, as the leader, cant micromanage everything in your empire...

True on both things you mentioned. You certainly can’t micromanage everything and automating everything at first does help you learn. Thanks for the comment.
