It delights me to say that until this very moment, I had never heard of Dark Academia before; It certainly amazes me greatly how everytime I watch a new video by Vintagebursche I get to learn something new about style, tailoring and history. Well done Sir, as a university student, I greatly appreciate your interpretation of different departments, and I can perfectly see a partial reflection of myself in the portrayal of the ideal literature scholar (although far from being ideal in my case). Keep it up with your channel, einwandfrei wie immer!
Omg! One incredible RU-vid producer who always inspires me, Ms. Bernadette Banner, watching the RU-vid channel of another another RU-vid creator who never fails to inspire me! I am in awe of present company!
I don’t know how much time I heard “I wish I was in that era of history, so I could dress like them” I always respond “Who said you have to be in that era to dress like that ?” They always look at me weirdly, personally I am someone who dress like a pirate, I try being the most historically accurate in my outfits.
Not to mention, most people born in that era didn't dress like that on a daily basis. Even their Sunday clothes probably did not look this well tailored. My grandfather was born in 1920, he was a factory worker, his father and grandfather were miners. The very few pictures I have of them aren't as stylish as what people picture when they think Victorian or Edwardian era.
This has been one of my pandemic goals... I'm am a research scientist in a university electrical engineering department, and I have been slowly moving my wardrobe in this direction. Most comfortable in dark and earth tones, yes. Prefer to have a more refined look in public, yes. Love learning about the history of everything, yes. Disgusted by academic snobbery, yup. Social awkwardness, absolutely. Writing a book, does my PhD thesis count? However, thus far my lack of tweed is disturbing...
I remember catching one of your old Livestreams, and immediately thought of your style as "German philosophy professor"... And it's come around again. Lol!
Could you imagine attending a history lecture in an historic wood panelled lecture room and this gentleman walking in to give the lecture! How cool that'd be.
This video is absolutely perfect in every way. I love the shift from student to mature professor. As someone in the early stages of building a "light academia" wardrobe (elevator pitch: "if Aziraphale from Good Omens was a 17th century lady, but still wore trousers"), the emphasis on older styles is much appreciated. I love to see your take on this! I wonder what your archaeology professor would look like! If I had one niggling nit to pick, it is that Greek men do not wear togas - at least in the period of their own dominion. Togas are Roman and a mark specifically of Roman citizenship.
Reading a book about the scientists working on the physics and chemistry of the atomic bomb (from 1900-1930s), this is the clothing style I imagine Bohr, Heisenberg and Pauli to have worn when they became proffesors! It's great how the video now gives substantial images to the imagination!
These videos are getting more and more high-production every post. At this point, it feels less like a one thousand subscriber channel and more like a big time music video or something. As a note, I like the break on your trousers. I much prefer little to no break. I find trousers that are a bit short far superior to too long.
Brilliant!. Although too old to carry off the regular student-ey dark academia aesthetic I still love it, and so have also chosen the professor take on this, together with my love of the 1890s-1940s era, this exactly fits my vibe, thank you for posting this 😀😀😀.
Loved the math professor outfit. The texture of your suit adds so much in a subtle manner and I love the weight that it gives to the outfit. Your taste in shoes is on point as always. I would say that look wouldn't be too out of place if you were to wear that around today. The glasses were a perfect compliment. Bravo.
I'd never heard of 'Dark Academia' before. I liked this short film (being an academic myself). Not sure you'll get far in academia reading those mirror-image books though!
I love how you presented every outfit in a different setting! I hope to make a vintage men's suit soon, and you are giving me a lot of good inspiration and ideas.
This could be your best vieo yet! I have two questions: Where did you buy the Maths Professor's suit, and what is the music which starts with the Engineering Professor? I am sudying engineering, and I definitely think that it is compatible with dark academia. Paricularly steam railways, early electrical equipment, early cinematic equipment, anything clockwork etc.
Wonderful video. I even recognized some of the places where you filmed. Loved all your wardrobe choices, especially the math professer. A Beautiful Mind is also one of my favourite movies.
None of my history tutors at university were quite so stylish (or good looking) as your good self. Had some of them been then I would have been enthralled by their lectures even more
As a music/theater teacher with a minor in German who sews vintage style clothing in my free time, this is the perfect blend of everything I love. Thank you for a beautiful video.
Wow. Beautiful video but more importantly, you own your style and that shows! You are so confident and at ease wearing these outfits. Very inspiring. Any chance for a winter outfits video? How to dress classic and vintage inspired when it is rainy and muddy outside and not break out the outdoor jackets? I am German myself and each year I get so frustrated at the Weihnachtsmarkt when everyone around me is dressed like they want to head into the mountains right away.
Oh. My. God. The TWEED! 🥰 Also I now have satchel envy. 😂 And a bonus clip of Castle Neuschwanstein, bringing back fond memories of a trip I took years ago. Thank you for taking the time to craft such an audiovisual feast.
I really like your take on dark academia! And i love your beard, i think it suits you very well. In combination with the different glasses and hats it works great for the "serious professor" look. I think i like the biology-prof best, but math is a close second place :)
Hi there! I'm a 19yo computing University student in London and I've long been in love with the dark aesthetics of the victorian, renaissance, even antiquity eras, and especially with fusing such put together aesthetics with the rebelliousness and countrrculture of the 60s and 70s. Perhaps I.T. gets a bad reputation style wise? I have to admit I get confused for a professor at my university, though the long hair kind of throws it off. Your channel is a welcome discovery and an exciting rabbit hole!
MfG
While not the norm, beards did in fact fit into both the Edwardian and 1920's periods. Both King Edward VII (the namesake of the "Edwardian" period himself) wore a beard, as did his successor, George V. Thinly trimmed beards were still relatively common pre WWI (e.g., as seen by Harry Selfridge), and while almost a black swan post-WWI, there are still primary examples such as one of the extras in the 1926 film "Underworld" (the prototype for Scarface in 1933) during the carnival scene- which is strange specifically for showing a relatively young man wearing a beard.
Ok, I'm waaaay late, but I really enjoyed this video. I also think that Chemistry is an important field of study to feature a Dark Academia style professor. Chemistry can be used to improve agricultural yields, create new materials and pharmaceuticals, or it can be used to kill thousands of people. And the early 20th century saw all of these applications.
Wonderfully edited and put together, this video is a masterpiece 😊. Brilliant engineer segment, much appreciated by an engineer like myself. Also, I enjoyed The Theory Of Everything so much too!
Hi! New subscriber here, found you through Bernadette Banners channel and I am so glad I did, great videos and I really love your style. Greetings from Finland, Johanna
Finally someone's forging the path! I'm subscribed! The lit students don't know what they're missing until they sit down with a battered copy of Kasap, a pot of tea, and have their minds blown about semiconductors. (And show me a book title more Victorian than "Calculus Made Easy: Being a Very-Simplest Introduction to Those Beautiful Methods of Reckoning Which Are Generally Called by the Terrifying Names of the Differential Calculus and the Integral Calculus, by Silvanus Phillips Thompson, F. R. S."... and I will eat my copy. That's not a legally binding promise though, because the book is very useful.)
I know this is an older video but engineering and Edwardian Dark Academia? Yes of course they're compatible... You had some great engineers in the Victorian era and technology didn't stop after 1901. (Also consider the technology of steampunk even if that's not incorporated into actual clothing/accessories). And I love the laptop bag! A perfect way for an Edwardian professor to carry his modern technology around!
I always wanted to have something like this, I want to be a history professor after I retire, well that is far future, I have not even completed my school but this is really what I wanted to portray many professors in different fields like this, I could not pin point what they would in my head but you have spoken and worn my imaginations, bravii.
This video made me laugh out loud. I never knew there was a style aesthetic built around ME and my life (as long time, tweed-wearing academic in the UK). I always thought the style looked good anyway....glad others seem to be rediscovering it. (In reality most academics are horrendously dressed, but that's a whole other matter...)
I want to dress like this but chicken out when it doesn’t fit properly. 2022 first thing I’m doing is getting fit /measurements by a tailor. Then I’ll post my creations 😊
I especially liked the "literature" look with the pin stripe suit and the striped tie. Personally I am not so much into vintage styles regarding my personal outfits. I do love Ivy Style but I do not want to recreate a certain era look and rather use the base of that look for a modern, non-dated look. Maybe the combination of tradition together with modern elements is an approach that can describe (some) fraternities nowadays as well? At least that was always our "goal" in my student corps, to make things approachable also for outsiders and to fit into modern society, without, of course, giving up the core values of a student corps (no pun intended...).
Beautiful video and thank you for including the location names. Do wonder where the footage for the botany/zoology professor was taken? Beautiful flora. Would love to see you take on anthropology and/or archaeology professor looks - they could be quite irregular to accommodate field work in various locations/climates. Thank you for helping to steer dark academia back to the academics themselves and showing how classy those looks can be.
i feel i have defiently answered before on if i would write a book, what would it be about. But ill answer again. Im taking a master degree in something called psychosocial health so one of my dreams is to write a fictional book about depression, anxiety and so on. To create spririts, creatures who represents for example depression, maybe the different emotions like happiness, sadness etc,
Thanks 🌟🖖🖖🖖🌟👍👍👍🌟💞💖💞🌟🙋🏼♀️Anton Petrov is next on my play list I will be a bit distracted by his tee shirt after your academia options he is a bit under dressed🙄🙋🏼♀️
Dang. I do teach compter science (not there in the 19th century) and the univerisity is a bold brutallist washed concrete building, not that ugly Brittish influenced historicising archticture of them Harvards and Yales. So I had to mix and match seventies dark academia, with a flare jeans and heeled boots.
I really like your take on Dark Academia and I like how you combine the colours and styles. It felt like something I can used in my daily life. I'm law student so I have to wear suits. I really like your video, btw I am trying to become a noir detective for Halloween but my three piece suite is blue and I don't know what colour scheme I have to follow, could you give some advice? Greetings from Peru!
