I have found in some cases that the stem had been snapped off but had enough thread to screw the crown back on .

@JDRichard 22 дня назад
@@tonyaxeman4381 yeah I think you’re right. I think probably I should’ve put a plug in the crown and lower the depth of the stem. But my little plug in the stem hole is so cool.

As you have said in several prior videos, there must be an emotional connection between the watch and its owner for you and i to make a reasonable amount of return on our labor. And i shall leave it at that and good luck JD 🍻

@JDRichard 22 дня назад
@@khronosbest9448 I guess the only emotional connection is the fact that I talk to the ladies who really want this thing repaired for their grandmother, and I used to go to school in the same city as she lives in. And finally, I did make a commitment to get this thing running again. So it’s my stubbornness that’s keeping me on this job.

You sir, have the patience of a saint. My takeaway is that, as you said, sometimes it's time to put the thing down. It's over 100 years old, and finicky. Does it run and set? Yes. Is it perfect? No, but it's running well enough. Put it down and turn your attention to the next project.

An old trick is to remove the crown from stem and place a small piece of soft solder in the threaded hole to increase the effective length of the stem. This does take some trial and error
@JDRichard
@JDRichard 23 дня назад
Yeah, I heard that in the past, but the problem would be if you screw up the depth then you end up with a chunk of solder in your crown. The way I’ve done it is that it can be redone at any point in time. The tricky part of what I’ve done is that you’re working with an extremely small piece of metal as you’ve seen in my video you need to and a lot of patience and some skills.

I had something similar happen, my brother got a elgin grade 387 the and after a few weeks the stem snapped. he was complaining it was kind of crunchy and hard to wind. I managed to thankfully find the right stem on ofrei after a lot of caliper measuring. I figured the original stem might have been a little to long hence the stiff winding . I set up the new stem, very carefully filed it to the right length until it worked with the movement and wound the movement smoothly, and when i compared the key end of the broken staff it was just a tiny bit to long. I was so scared that i would cut to much off the new stem when i was setting it up, resorted to filling it on a sharpening stone for a few seconds, putting the movement in, rinse and repeat, until it was the right size so i feel your pain when it comes to adjusting pocket watch stems.

@@matthewakin1235 hey thanks for the story and I’m glad that there’s more people out there to suffered this pain. He can’t cut something longer. That’s the problem.

No do not make a steel plug instead put some hard wood into crown . You still need a new stem Doc .

Not sure if I had enough Realestate in the crown to do this. The plug works fine and I will let the customer know to come back to me with any issues in the future
