In this video, we show a gabion wall already built and outline steps to build another wall.
We are a bit behind schedule due to Covid and a knee injury. Despite this, work continues.

Very hefty work for just a couple , respect from Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦. I may try that myself. I will have to make the cages myself as they are not available locally .
@montanalivinginthebigskyco8541
Welcome Saudi Arabia! Try landscapers or road construction companies for access to the cages. These cages are frequently used to shore up hillsides when putting in roads. Also used for creating nice rock gardens. We did make our prototype cage out of hog or cattle panel typically used to make temporary fencing for livestock. If you use these panels make sure the gauge is thick enough. (There is a video on gauge thickness). And yes, these pit greenhouses are used in dry hot climates as well. We will have a video when showing how we put in tubing for air exchange that can expel hot air out. Best wishes on your endeavor J&K

Thank you for sharing. You have lots of river rock, maybe consider prospecting for a bit of gold. Great hobby.. ❤

Hello to Uganda - and welcome to the channel. That is what I like about RU-vid - sharing our collective knowledge around the world. We will be uploading a video this month as we have made some progress recently. Stay tuned. 😊

Wow! It's beautiful! Nice job. I'm looking thru your channel now to see end results. What was your reasons for doing this type foundation?
@montanalivinginthebigskyco8541
Hello and nice question. In true Walipini fashion, we are using our local resources to build. We have very rocky soil where we live, so we put that resource to use. We are trying to be an example on conservation while being economical in our build. While we are able to keep costs to a minimum, the labor is intensive. So there is that trade-off. Cheers, J&K

Gah be on, is how it's pronounced btw. They were for seige warfare.
@montanalivinginthebigskyco8541
I didn't know that was the original use. My husband constantly says Gam bee uns. I try to edit those pronunciations out ;-D

Tack welded screens break easily.
@montanalivinginthebigskyco8541
They can, yes, and that is why we reinforced all our cages. Also, that is why in another video I recommend purchasing twisted wire gabion basket panels.

And what length are your posts and how deep are they set in the ground?
@montanalivinginthebigskyco8541
Hello and thank you for your comment. Check out the video Step 8a where we talk about this more. The south facing wall is deeper in the ground to allow for a cold sink. So those poles will be cut to be about 7.5 feet tall from Walipini floor level. The East, West and North walls are about 5.5 feet tall. All posts are about 3 to 3.5 feet deep into the ground and anchored with rebar.

Where did you order it?
@montanalivinginthebigskyco8541
@montanalivinginthebigskyco8541 8 месяцев назад
Hi @moneybay Thank you for your comment. There are a number of suppliers out there but availability is the issue. Many of our kits were purchased before the supply shortages today. However, we did run into some issues with supply and canceled shipments for kits ordered in 2021, so we purchased from various suppliers. If you are in the US, there is more availability from Earth-Wall Products out of Smyrna, Georgia. This supplier provides twisted wire gabion baskets which I believe offer more flexibility with support over the tap wire welded cage kits we ordered. (Wish we had gone with twisted wire to save on all the additional tap welding we did ourselves to achieve more structural support). Another benefit to Earth-Wall Products is that they have a structural engineer on staff that can provide guidance for your design. Another tip for resources in your area is to talk to large landscapers or fencers. Gabion baskets are traditionally used in landscaping and fencing. These businesses should be able to give you some leads. If you buy from big box stores or big internet suppliers (ie. Amazon, Wayfair) , just make sure you are getting rust resistant, galvanized metal that is at least 9 or 11 gauge wire. If you wire cage is made of twisted wire, instead of tap welded, you will pay more. Cheers, J&K

Hey thanks do you have a link to the kits you used??

If you mean the gabion baskets, no I don't. We ordered from different suppliers as availability became an issue. Check your own national sources as it may be easier to buy domestically.

Where did you buy these kits
@wiredwildwest6131
@wiredwildwest6131 2 года назад
Thank you for your comment. I bought the kits from several sources. I ordered some kits in 2020 and had little sourcing issues. Availability became an issue in 2021 and some orders were backorder then canceled. Others came incomplete. You may want to buy domestically. Check with large landscapers in your area for sourcing since gabion baskets are typically used in garden walls. We bought tap-welded baskets and I wish we would have gone with twisted wire. This would have saved time in reinforcing. I talk about this in one of my videos so that is something you may want to consider if your walls are tall. Cheers J&K

55 meters of 1.5x 1x2 topped with 1x1 I will never look at Rick’s the same way again as I stole them all 😂 My wall took years to build for free - the cage cost taram membrane and type 1 mot the rest I stole from the floor ditches and skips only and filled the cages .

Thank you for your question. The kits were purchased from various suppliers. Check with professional landscapers in your area to find local sources. You can also search the internet for Gabion walls or Gabion baskets. J&K
