In this episode we will cover how to build the top part of our crochet sweater, also called the yoke. This is the most complex section of our sweater-making journey because of the various moving parts we must deal with and that's when stitch markers of various colors are essential to keep track of things.
I want to give a shout out to the following RU-vidrs for telling to their subscribers and members about my channel:

Excellent explanation of how to set up the markers for the yoke. Your method of extending the length of the back of the sweater versus the front of the sweater is revolutionary! Especially appreciate you taking the time to explain why the back of the sweater should be longer than the front. Interestingly, this is also true for women’s sweaters. A lot of women’s patterns don’t make this accommodation because of course we’re larger in the front than most men are and need extra length to accommodate that. But not all women are that much larger than men. Those women who are less endowed, will end up with a much better fitting sweater following your method. Incidentally, in knitting we achieve added length to the back yoke of a sweater using short rows. And, although short rows can be used in crochet, your method is much easier to keep track of and I think more straightforward. Thanks for another excellent video!

Crocodile Dundee... this is amazing!!! This video has so much information to take in. It's overwhelming but in a very good way. Thank you for much for teaching us on the construction of a top-down yoke sweater. In all the years that I have watched other RU-vidrs do tutorials on how to increase in a HDC stitch, I have NEVER seen your version and I LOVE IT! I am currently working on 3 WIPS... but once I'm done, I will definitely work on this. Have a wonderful rest of your day, Fabio! Again, thank you. 🙂

In 55 years I have knitted hundreds of jumpers from top to bottom, along with thousands of other things (socks, waistcoats, scarves, shawls etc.). I've also crocheted a lot of things, like clothes and decorations. But not so many jumpers and none from top to bottom. I'm really impressed with the way you handled the different heights of the front and back and the way you present your instructions. And I love the way you do your increases, something I've never seen before. I will definitely use them when I start this jumper. I want to give you a big compliment for your special way of sharing and making others understand your wonderful work. I am very happy to have discovered you here and I am sure your channel will be a great success as everything is right here - knowledge, passion and a great warmth. Many thanks dear Fabio.

I have followed so many great domestika courses in the last years, these are professionally made with a big team and therefore are not free. and i have to say, fabio, your sweater course here is really up there with the experienced artists on domestika, in terms of content, teaching style and the overall quality of your lectures. I greatly enjoy it , and i m a picky content consumer. Maybe you could even think about offering a course additionally over there. I imagine it would be a fun experience. They only work with professional artists.. my guess is that they want you, if they see your youtube content. I am really impressed and grateful that your a gifting us these videos

This is such a wonderfully detailed, informative, and well executed series of videos. I’m excited to try and figure out the gauge on different stitches. I’m not the biggest fan of hdc, but lately I’ve been really into griddle stitch for baby clothes. Leaving the seam open and positioning it on top of the shoulder would allow me to place buttons there to fit a cute sweater over a giant baby head.

Brilliant! Such a precise way of creating shape! Also I had a few lingering questions from your intro video which were not exactly answered here but its obvious why you do things the way you do! For example why you don't hide your seam in your increases, which clearly wouldn't work with your (genius) increase stitch! I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who's using your vids as an unintentional CAL! X

I can't wait to get started!! Buuuut, I haven't finished making swatches to see what stitch size my husband likes. He has agreed to be my guinea pig for the first sweater, so much easier to judge fit when I don't have to use a mirror. Great instruction about the stitch markers and using different colors for different reasons. Love this, I have used this method for myself as I get confused otherwise. I confess, I watched this the first time through while completing a different crochet project, just to see your teaching style. Now I know I can follow without too many pauses on my side to keep up. But first, need to finish the last swatch and see which needle I will be using!!

Now I have to go shopping. I don't have the yarn weight necessary for this, it's all either #10 cotton thread or worsted weight acrylic, neither of which works for this sweater. I'm not even going to attempt this with the worsted weight and a size K hook. It's your pattern, I'll follow you. Oh, and I'm not surprised it's more detailed than I imagined; in fact, it should be, as simple men's sweater patterns (if you can find them) make for horrid apparel.

Fabio, thank you for spending time with us. I am doing my crocheting homework with discounted, variegated Christmas yarn, so it looks like I’ll end up with an ugly Christmas sweater. 😂 It’s all they had at the store. The proper yarn will arrive in 7 days. Great technique, especially the increase stitch. Thought I would end up with holes. That starting seam could be placed at the front (not joined) to make a cardigan for another variation (not sure if it’s possible, as I am a beginner). Enjoyed the longer looks at your sweaters.❤
@CrochetByFabio
@CrochetByFabio Месяц назад
That’s a great idea for a cardigan. Since a cardigan requires a 180-degree rotation of the seam, make sure you place the various stitch markers correctly so as to off center the neck hole in the correct direction. Also, I’m glad you noticed why I increase the way I do. ❤️

Your explanation of the neck hole being offset is a light bulb moment. Now I understand why my sweaters ride up in the back. Also, question: you are demonstrating the back and forth method which creates a seam (which I dislike). Why do you not demonstrate crocheting in the round?
@CrochetByFabio
@CrochetByFabio Месяц назад
Because that’s more complicated due to the slant working in the spiral round adds to the moving parts we already have to deal with. We will cover that on a future sweater project, promise. ❤️

Thank you so much for this series! Your increasing technique is very good to avoid holes by stretching the stitches with 2 hdc. It works great! Already started my yoke but I went a bit too fast before realising the way we need to move the burgundy stitch marker 🤭 Still haven't quite understood by the way ; we need to move the stitch marker 2 stitches but counting from the previous increasing stitch marker, right? I'll have to start over tomorrow but I'm super excited for this! Thank you so much for sharing! It's amazing! ❤

Thank you so much for your kind words! 🙏 Let me see if I can explain how to properly move the burgundy stitch markers. Every row, they need to be moved by two stitches going outward, each one in the direction of where the shoulders are. What makes it complicated is the fact that we are also working increases while also constantly changing direction (back and forth, back and forth, remember?). I find that if I count the stitches starting from the yellow stitch marker, I will position the burgundy stitch marker in the correct stitch. If instead I count two stitches from the previous position of the burgundy stitch marker, after a few rows, the burgundy stitch markers will have traveled independently (one farther out than the other one). Here is an example. Right before starting row (or round) 4, I will have to move the burgundy stitch markers two stitches, which means 6 stitches from their original position when they used to share the stitch with their respective yellow stitch markers. I hope I was able to be clearer here. ❤️

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer! Now I get it! I was moving the burgundies two stitches from their previous space and not from the previous stitch marker and, obviously, one of the burgundies was traveling far apart... haha, I will start over today, I can't wait! Keep on the great work, I already know your channel is going to grow amazing! Greetings from France 🇫🇷 ❤

Fabio you are adorable and a fast learner. Could you consider submitting a partnership with a yarn supplier and / or open a website to sell your creations? I think is a bit premature to switch your You Tube video from free to pay member. They are other ways you can make money. 🤔

Thank you so much for your kind words of support. 🙏 Thank you also for your question. I will continue to make more tutorials in the future and those will continue to be free free free. Live events, where I answer questions, go over stitches in more details, etc., those will be part of the membership program, and only those.

I am loving this method! And your tutorials are great! I have a question, which may have been asked but I can't find it. When you rotate the neck by 2 stitch markers so the seam is not down your back, is it always 2 or does that depend on the number of stitch markers you have for your increases? Do you want the seam at about a 45⁰ angle or is it just 2 stitch markers?
@CrochetByFabio
@CrochetByFabio Месяц назад
Hi and great question, which, by the way, has not been asked before. So, do I want the seam at about 45° angle or is it just 2 stitch markers? For this particular sweater construction follow the 2 stitch markers rule. In future series, when I will cover the spiral construction, we will move the seam to the side in a different way. ❤️

Can you please tell us where to buy #3 yarn in colors other than baby colors? I'm enjoying your videos very much!
@CrochetByFabio

Some @michaels stores are better supplied than others. That’s where I bought the yarn for these tutorials because I didn’t want to wait the typical delivery time that online vendors have. But if you’re the patient kind and can wait 7 to 10 days for delivery, I have happily ordered from both @Herrschners and @Hobbiicom (Hobbii being my preferred between the two). Hope this helps.

LOL. Bacioni! ❤️

Thanks so much for this detailed, crochet-along tutorial 😍 Just a question. You mention a number for wool but, in Italy, the only thread marked with a number is cotton for lace (runners, curtains, doilies). Which hook is suitable for the number 3 wool you mention?
@CrochetByFabio
@CrochetByFabio Месяц назад
The swatches I make beforehand will tell me which hook to use, as I explain in Episode 2.

Thank you for your kind words! 🙏 those stitch markers were a Christmas gift, so I don’t know where they were purchased and don’t remember the brand either as I threw away the label. Are they strong? For what I need to do, yes, they seem to be strong! ❤️

Question: since you are doing front loop stitches, working back and forth would create ribbing right? And working spiral would I guess be more uniform on every row?
@CrochetByFabio
@CrochetByFabio Месяц назад
Great question. Whether worked in the round or back and forth, HDC-FLO will only create a decorative ridge. It’s not the direction of your stitching, but the loop chosen. Front loop = decorative ridge, back loop = ribbing.
