Why do tourists try to engage guards in conversation. A polite” thank you for your service” should be the only words directed to the Guard and his horse.

I’m with you on this. It irks me watching them do this. Also when they extend their arm as though they are presenting something. Just keep your distance, take the photo and leave!
Why are you lot being big cry babies? I watch non Asians take ages flipping their hair, rearranging clothes for so long four other people could have had their photos taken.
Horse Guards is on Whitehall Central London a popular walk for tourists with Trafalgar Square at one end ,Downing Street and Westminster Abbey , Big Ben at the other . Across the Parade ground at the back is the Mall , St James park and leading to Buckingham Palace . It's a public right of way and has been for over 300 years . The courtyard and barracks is Ministry of Defence hence the armed MOD police who are there for security , antiterrorism and public safety . The Kings Lifeguards stand duty there daily a ceremonial duty now but with a long history and tradition .
