Growing my plants in leca/ semi-hydroponics has made managing my large plant collection much easier. Leca is a great choice as a potting medium for those who tend to over-water. Semi-hydro isn't for everyone though....

Not sure if it's helpful, but what I found I like to do is filling a bucket or stock pot with water, then filling my netpot/nursery pot half way with LECA, putting in the plant and filling it the rest of the way. But instead of pounding down the LECA ,I just dunk the netpot into the bucket of water. This causes the LECA to float (don't dunk it all the way in, just like 95% of the way) and I can just shimmy it a little and let the LECA and roots do their own thing in the water. Then pull it out and it's usually settle din there pretty well! Hope this even makes sense. xD

I use a makeup (blush) brush to clean the roots. It's soft and pliable and makes the process easier.

I honestly don't know if this is good or not but I put a bread tie around my more full/bushy Hoyas because they have short stems at the bottom that its hard to keep them in the leca pot long enough for them to establish themselves without tipping over. ive don't it to my princess and my queen and so far so good

Is bonsai wire ok to sit in the Leca Reservoir?

If it is made with copper or aluminum then you should be fine.

Are there different varieties of leca, or a brand you'd recommend? I haven't been able to find leca in the big garden stores in my area, but online there are a few listings for generic 'hydro clay balls', and I'm wondering if that'd be okay?

You can find them at hydroponic stores or even ikea. But otherwise you can buy them off amazon. Some are more round then others. That’s the only difference I’ve noticed so just comes don’t to what you prefer.
