SharonMyART hello,do you remember the classic thomas that used wooden figures to represent humans?can you teach us how to make that? that would be nice, thanks
2 things: 1. I am a retired , old veteran and you have inspired me today. 2. You just gained another subscriber. 😄. Thank you for brightening my day. I needed this.
You all prolly dont give a damn but does anybody know a trick to get back into an instagram account? I somehow lost the account password. I love any tricks you can give me
@Creed Darian thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Hi Sharon Elliott, I subscribed, Im 75 and have whittled a little in my life and wanted to learn go to go about things carving. I signed up for your little people class before going to a group class on wood carving at Cedar Lakes Conference Center, in West Virginia for a week. Even though the class instructor had over 20 years experience, you did more exacting and progressive way of teaching what needed to be done and why. I have shown parts of you video to others in the carving group and they are surprised and impressed at your technique. Thanks for helping me chip away.
I love how detailed this "Step by Step" video is! You took a lot of time to show us how this works. It helped me a lot! I started wood carving not too long ago so I have to learn all the different techniques :D Thanks a lot!! (sorry for my english ._.)
Sharon, Thank you very much for making these videos. You are a very good teacher and the thing I like the most is that you don't waste my time; you get right to it. So keep up the good work. Ron
Great videos! Superb way for my daughter to learn, as I am not the best at explaining. We are making our little farmers together. Thanks for taking the time to make and post these.
Thank you Sharon! Im new to carving and love the detail in your explanations. I see theres been no new posts for awhile. I hope all is well in your world. Thank you for sharing your talent with us🥰❤️
Hi, thanks so much! I am going to show this to a friend tomorrow. She has been carving for 8 years and is 75. I have been carving for 3 years and am 65 and finally we are being shown exactly what to do. Our 30 year carving friend is better at doing than showing and the pictures I never understood until I saw what you were doing. WE shall be watching you from now on and closely. PS...love chickens in the background!
I am recently retired and am looking to develop a hobby. I have always liked wood working in the past (way way past) and am very interested in carving.I appreciate the level of detail and common sense advise you provide. Thank you for sharing your talent !
Thanks for all your great videos! I just followed your 12 step program and now I feel like a new person-a person was able to carve a little person. I was amazed when at the end of 12 steps my figure actually bore some resemblance to your model. You are a natural teacher; I just love your demeanor. Keep up the good work!
I'm just getting into carving. I cut up and pulled out a dead bush stump, and am looking for tips and advice. I may just have to try making these little people. They are adorable. After I see if I can turn a hollow piece of the stump into a night light. 😀
Hi Sharon, I am initiating me to the wood carving with your videos and i would like to indicate that i should buy knives and tools to initiate me. Thanks.
Mrs Sharon, i love to watch your videos. I will be doing carving soon as well!! I have a question, if it is okey! I have a brain injury and i have a hard time to hear the size of wood you are about to use. Also, for all of your little persons, is the wood you use the same size? Could you please just write down the size of the wood you use for the projects, would truly mean a lot for me. Thank you so much for sharing your videos, i love it!! Cannot wait to start anymore!!
Hello! What kind of wood and knife are you using? I am trying with pine and it is so difficult I cant imagine how it looks as though you're carving butter!! Thank you!
Hi, Sharon There are wood carving blades out there for X-ACTO knives. They're less expensive than the knife you're using. I'm new to this hobby and I'd like to know if I can use an X-ACTO as an alternative to using your knife. Also regarding the wood being used to carve these guys, I thought an alternative to basswood would be something like pine or perhaps balsa wood. Is there anything wrong with these alternatives?
Basswood is really the premium stuff to use. Pine tends to split easily and balsa is just so fragile and has a fuzzy surface. You can see how nicely the basswood holds detail with a sharp knife in this video. I suggest Heinecke Wood products for good prices (I'm not affiliated with them). A search is your friend. That said, I really like to whittle found wood - branches, random bits of pruned wood, that sort of thing. If you want consistent properties, get basswood, if you want character in your material, get free wood. I have never been happy carving pine. But that may just be me. Regarding knives, you can certainly carve with X Acto blades, but you will eventually want to move up to a better quality knife. The round handles are not as controllable as a proper carving knife. If you already have the XActo, use that. If not, look into a decent pocket knife. Victorinox makes a 2 blade one called the Pocket Pal that is great for whittling. It isn't expensive - under $20. The Tinker might be even cheaper and it comes with a can opener. You want a handle you can control, a blade that is thin enough to be really sharp without being too long, and a look that says "not a weapon" to anyone who sees it. You will want proper sharpening tools, too. A fine grit hone and a small strop with compound will be all most people ever need.
An X-ACTO is not designed for this type of work. You can make it work probably. It will take longer and you will break blades. A good properly sharpened small blade pocket knife would be much better. But then again, the best carving knives in the world are only $30.
I'm assuming you don't expect me to use the same knife you have. I use a carving knife, a gouge, a chisel, and a V carving tool all made by Flexcut along with a Dremel tool and an occasional X-ACTO knife. I also have the Flexcut sharpening strop
Hi Tia! She said she has carved over 2,000 of these little people, so I imagine she has developed some muscles specific to carving. Soaking the wood in water before you carve it helps soften the wood also. Also, make sure your knife is razor sharp so that it shaves the hair on your arm. These guys sure are a lot of fun to carve and make great gifts. Take care.
I've tried to carve little people before, but every time they "run away" and I get a "restraining order" and a "jail sentence of 15 years for assault and battery." What am I doing wrong?
Sharon, I like your videos and I also have Jack Prices videos. Don ' t you feel bad about copy Jack' s videos to make yours? Their is no doubt about were you got this idea. Jack Burgeson
Sharon .. Your teachings are identical to the great teacher Jack Price who's video is Carving Compact Characters ..This man is still alive and even wrote books about this way to carve ..You are selling videos that are identical to his teachings and this is just plain wrong ..I know this man personally and he is the creator of compact characters ..Give this man his due in creating the technique
Gene Messer Not to be critical or anything, but wether or not she learned from him doesnt make a difference. I pass along lots of things I learn from others. Is it wrong for me to share a video showing crochet stitches my mother taught me? It is also quite posible that there are many people who think alike in this world. How can you be certain she didnt do these first, or learn the technique from one of her grandparents or something. Besides, Price uses a different technique. He cuts a silhouette of the subject then defines it. Ive seen these same figures she is carving EVERYWHERE. I really dont think they should be labled exclusive. I also dont know why you have complimented this carver in the past if you felt this way.
