Picked up my Nuc this morning from y’all in Birmingham. Everything went easy and smooth, no problems. The nuc was placed in a netting sack and I put it secure in back of my suv and drove about 40 minutes back home. I watched this video several times before picking up my bees and I’m happy I did so. I will be doing more business with them in the future I’m sure. 👍

When I opened up my NUCs about 2 weeks ago, the bees were all over the top and inside and flying all around me. Tons more than you show.
@Foxhoundbeeco

Hey Kim - The amount of bees and brood inside a nuc will vary and will change based on the situation of the nuc. In only a week, a nucleus hive can go from a very small population of adult bees to overflowing with adult bees.

This is a great video - thank you! If I have a hive from a previous colony that didn’t survive the winter, do I need to do anything differently to install a new nuc? Do I still need to provide 1:1 sugar water or is the honey in the hive enough (1 medium box about 60% honey)?
@Foxhoundbeeco
@Foxhoundbeeco Месяц назад
Thank you! For a hive from a previous colony, clean and inspect it before installing a new nuc. The honey in the hive can be a food source, but since it's only about 60% honey, you may still want to provide 1:1 sugar water, especially initially, to ensure the bees have enough food. Monitor the hive closely to adjust feeding as needed.

How do I ensure the queen doesn't fly away? I'll see you Saturday!!!!
@Foxhoundbeeco
@Foxhoundbeeco Месяц назад
To ensure the queen doesn't fly away, inspect the hive during calm weather, use a queen excluder at the entrance, handle frames gently, and consider marking the queen. A calm hive reduces the chances of her flying away.

You didn't mention checker boarding. To get the bees to use all frames. Also when you add a deep. You need to bring a frame of brood up to encourage the muse bees to use the new box.
@rstlr01
@rstlr01 8 месяцев назад
Definitely won’t be checkerboarding with that population. Liable to damage your colony if you get them all spread out during a cold snap, and they lose a couple frames of brood. You can throw on the second brood box once they have 8 of 10 frames drawn out and move a couple brood frames up then if you so desire.
@ProfessorBoswell

100%, I wouldn't checkerboard until they're more built up and the weather is consistently warm. In general though I like to let them figure it out on their own, they know where they want food & brood and I've never had a colony build comb slow or inconsistently.
@Foxhoundbeeco
@Foxhoundbeeco Месяц назад
Thanks for your comment! Checkerboarding is indeed a valuable technique to help bees utilize all frames, and it's great to bring it up. As for adding a deep, you're right that moving a frame of brood up can encourage the bees to expand into the new space. Both strategies are effective for managing hive growth and ensuring the bees make the most of the available frames. Appreciate the input! 🐝

Great point about the risks of checkerboarding with a smaller colony, especially during a cold snap. It's essential to consider the hive's current population and weather conditions. Waiting until 8 out of 10 frames are drawn out before adding the second brood box and then moving a couple of brood frames up is a solid approach. Thanks for sharing your insights!
@Foxhoundbeeco
@Foxhoundbeeco Месяц назад
Absolutely, waiting until the colony is stronger and the weather is consistently warm is crucial before checkerboarding. Letting bees manage their brood and food placement naturally can be very effective; they have an incredible instinct for it. It's always fascinating to see how well they can organize their hive. Thanks for sharing your approach!

I’m getting local nucs this summer 2 slides of bees 2 slides of food do they produce any honey the first year? Or u just leave it for them for food
@e.l.1303
@e.l.1303 Месяц назад
If there are enough bees in the hive, & you have good nectar flow (lots of food flowers blooming) within 5 miles of the hive, they can make honey for both the bees & you, though that's more likely in year 2. I keep 2 brood boxes (just for bees & their food), then add supers when they're ready. Kept 1 super of honey for bees over winter. Anything past that you can harvest.
@Foxhoundbeeco
@Foxhoundbeeco Месяц назад
It's advisable to leave the honey produced by the bees in their first year for their food supply. This helps them establish a strong colony. However, some hives may produce surplus honey that you can harvest. It's best to consult with local beekeepers or a beekeeping association for advice specific to your area. We're here to support you on your beekeeping journey!

Why wouldn’t you just shake the bees into the frames? The queen could have been in that pile you threw at the entrance. Not the way I would do that.
@CircuitBreaker256
@CircuitBreaker256 Год назад
Totally agree. Before putting the roof back on you could shake the bees onto the top of the frames. Otherwise you could literally be throwing the queen on the floor if she had fallen to the bottom of the original box.
@Foxhoundbeeco

Great point if you can't find the queen on the frame.

I saw your bee feeders on Amazon and read the reviews. I intentionally shy away from products that have a high number of Vine reviews. They are too unreliable. So I passed on your product.
