Again very well done! I like the hairwork especially. One of the reasons I work in pastel is the blending effect. I have tried out doing portraits with coloured pencils first and I liked the results but my first (and last) try of a portrait was done in pastel and I was convinced right away. So, greetings from germany. You know I like your videos and work a lot and thanks for keeping pastels up :D

Thankyou, I appreciate it 😊 I also did a portrait in coloured pencil about 5 years ago and haven't done one in colour since! So this is my first portrait in pastels, but pastels do make it quite a lot easier to do 😊

Holy crap! Been scouring RU-vid for pastel (human) portrait tutorials and finally!!! I’ve found you!!!!! There are some greats on here but are very focused on animals, and landscapes and there are many others that I feel I’ve surpassed now and can’t learn any more from. But you my dear! Incredible skill! Thank you so much for sharing your process! Amazing! and you use pan pastels to boot! And you’re Aussie!!!!!! In my own backyard nonetheless!!!! You bet I subscribed so fast!!!! 😅🤩

Haha I'm glad you found the tutorials! Honestly, I don't have a lot of portrait tutorials (I'm mainly animal focused) but it is hard to find people who do portrait tutorials in pastel so I hope my videos can help! 😊

@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt at least the ones you have are outstanding! I do a lot of pet portraits as commissions because that’s what people want these days but my real passion is people and faces. I’m aiming to reach a skill level that will allow me to teach portrait tutorials in pastel and I’m getting pretty close I think. I’ve been finding it difficult to make time to focus on that though because I need to work on other projects and other jobs to fund life and art supplies. Baby steps. Once again thank you for sharing what you know and helping me work on my goals.

how long did this drawing take you? and what is better for portraits, pastel pencils or soft pastels
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 3 года назад
I honestly couldn't tell you, I drew it over a period of a few weeks in small amounts Pastel pencils are technically soft pastels, so whatever soft pastel you prefer will be fine for portraits. I use Pan Pastels and Pastel Pencil (like in the tutorial) for most of my pieces 😊
@simonsobo4644

I have never before seen a portrait where the subject genuinely looks alive. What PanPastels can you recommend?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 4 года назад
Thank you I appreciate it :) Do you mean what brand, what colours for this portrait/portraits in general, or what colours should you buy in general? In terms of brands, Pan Pastel is the brand name, there's only one In terms of colours, it really depends on your subject and the lighting etc because each piece will require different colours If you are looking at purchasing a set of Pan Pastels, I recommend the painting/pure colour sets (the bigger the set, the easier it is to mix colours!) You can actually mix every colour you need from 5 colours just like paint I have a video that explains a bit more about Pan Pastels if you are interested :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JfUltMXPJxQ.html

Very useful tutorial but after every tutorial I’ve found about pastels and color pencils I ask myself: how do they know the right (amount of) color? I see people mixing greys, browns reds, even greens 😐 and end up with a beautiful skin color… please tell me how to learn this!
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 2 года назад
Thank you 😊 Honestly, it just takes practice (that's probably not what you want to hear!) I work in layers, so I usually start with a colour that I can clearly see in any given area, then as my layers develop, I ask myself which colour can I add to alter that area to make it look more like the reference photo So I might start with a muted purple, then in the next layer I will look at my reference and see that it has more of an orange tint to it.. so I will add orange Then I might ask myself what the difference is between my colour and the reference... does the reference look more red? Then I'll add some red... if mine looks more red than the reference, I might add the opposite colour on the colour wheel to dull it down (green)...or it might only be slightly too red, but should be a bit more on the purple side... so I'll add blue to tint it more purple It's always different in every situation, but basically I'm just tinting the colour in each layer to make it closer to what I see in the reference I don't usually know the exact colours I am going to use when I start a piece of artwork... I choose a colour when I am physically working on that area, in that specific layer It's hard to explain in a comment, but it honestly just takes a lot of practice... and watching tutorials can be super helpful - and if you really like an artist's artwork, a lot of us have Patreon which is also really helpful because you can see every step and the reasons why we choose the colours we are choosing (it's good to follow a few different people if you can, so you can see how others do it as well!) I hope that helps!
