A step by step process to establish pre germinated grass seed.
Products
- Mesh paint strainer
- 5 gallon buckets or totes for larger seeding
- Grass Seed
- A slow release fertilizer like Milorganite
- Yard Rake
Steps
- Put grass seed in paint strainers.
- Submerge grass seed for 24 hrs.
- Take a 5 gallon bucket or a tote and drill holes in it.
- Double up buckets or totes so that way the drain holes are on top and water can drain into the other bucket or tote.
- Put grass seed in buckets or a tote to let it drain into the bucket or tote underneath.
- Allow grass seed to drain for 12 hrs.
- After each 12 hrs. Grass seed has to be rinsed a good amount to stay moist. Also water needs to be discarded at the bottom of the bucket or totes.
- After a couple of days there will be white fuzzies on the seed, this means the grass is germinated. The seed needs to go down as soon as possible.
- Mix seed with fertilizer and spread evenly in your yard.
~Disclaimer~
When using totes to store grass seed in, the grass will germinate faster because of airflow.

I'm confused by your process. I've watched at least 5 other videos for pregerminating and they ALL but the back in the bucket, completely underwater, let it soak for 12 hours, replace the water (do NOT dump the old water on your lawn. Apparently it will kill the lawn) and repeat until they see germination or the white fuzzy stuff.

Yes I am doing it that way, I believe you can submerge the seed fully for the entire time until they germinate.. time will tell with my project in a day or two

@APinTheAK seed germinated but not any faster than putting it on the ground

first 24 hours seeds in water. after 24 hours, drain water, wait 12 hours for seeds to dry. after 12 hours seeds dry, soak seeds in water. then repeats. alot of youtube creators, they dont give a better explans. its really weird. also, dont buy coat seeds .

Yup, it’s been about a week and so far the seed that came from the tote are germinating much faster than the buckets. The next video will be up in the next day or two!

Did you say you have to keep the bag open so the seeds get air? You do know that the bag has a million holes in it right? 😂😂😂

what the advantage of per-germinating the seeds this way ? ...Does the little sprouts break when putting them down , raking them out ??
@yardknocks6359
@yardknocks6359 Год назад
Mat Tuk the advantages I have found are lost seed. That’s either from birds getting the seed or rain washing it away, or etc. So if you can get more seed germinated before you throw it in the lawn, the better chance it’s going to stick. Another advantage is less water is used. I’m on a well so it’s not as big of a problem compared to someone that’s on a regulated water system.

Kentucky Blue Grass has to be watered and moist on your soil for 3 weeks to even start to grow. 3 weeks is forever for storms to wash away and tight schedules before freeze etc. This cuts the time down until the grass roots / sprouts. Possibly better germination rate and success and way less time watering your lawn. You don’t have to soak and wait until it fully sprouts - I am doing just 4 whole days on my kbg. I figure it is a bit safer of not getting ahead of me.

@mattuk1310 dunno what seed our USA cousins use but UK seed (mix of fescues) needs to be sown BEFORE it germinates, ie only do a 3 day pre-soak and then get it down and covered with fine tilth.

And A LOT less watering. Filling buckets of water up is a lot less expensive then running 10 sprinklers ever 3 hours for 10 minutes.

What if you put an air bubbler under the seed?

Interesting technique....I see you used milorganite as your spreading medium... milorganite web site has a pregermination write up but you're technique is quite different. You note needing to leave the strainer bag open. I'm confused since it is a straining bag air flow isn't determined by a closed or open top. Am i missing something? What I've found is the soak time to germination is determined by the seed type. The soak time can vary greatly. Milorganite states 5 days for kbg and 3 to 5 for rye and fescue. I've had to double those times for germination.

JC S175 everything I’ve done is just based on my own experiences. Surprisingly a straining bag does restrict airflow. I want as much air as possible to propel the seed to germinate. Note the top of the bags in the tote. There’s more germination there then anywhere in the strainer bag. I hope that answers some of your questions!

Do you do this in the fall for overseeding?
@jcs1758
@jcs1758 11 месяцев назад
@phizz8694 I've seeded in the spring, summer and fall. I seeded 5ksf on 8/1 which was mid Sumner heat. That being said I'm in NE Ohio near the lake. Mid 80s low 90s occasionally is our max heat. Soil temps top out in the low to mud 70s. I pregerminated the KBG for 11 days. The TTTF was placed right out of the bag without pregermination. The Seed popped in day 4/5. As of 9/15 i mowed for the 6th time. I always pregerm KBG...TTTF I no longer pregerm. This skies birth seeds to pop around the same time

@@jcs1758I am also in Ohio, trying to pre-germinate TTTF using this method. Today is Day 4, I am still changing water every 12 hours in my kitchen, no change of the seeds I can see. I am getting anxious now, not sure it will work.
@jcs1758
@jcs1758 4 месяца назад
@shanghongdong5917 for TTTF I soak it around 7 days then I plant/ spread it. I've got to say I've never actually seen the seed start to change or open.... but I usually get germination around 4 days after I've planted it. As for this guys "open the straining bag top"....pure BS

Even though I changed the water every 12 hours, the water/seed started to smell. Does that mean my seeds are as good as dead?

you should rebuy the seeds. soak seeds in water for 24 hours. after 24 hours, drain them and leave in the bucket (with out water) dont add water. wait 12 hours untill seeds are dry. soak the seeds again another 12 hours.

What kind of grass seed? Also, at 4:59 you say you're at day 5. By the time you show you mixing it with Milorganite, was that like day 6? trying to judge if I'll have grass growing in my bag lol. Supposed to have downpours on Saturday so Sunday at noon would be 4.5 days.
@yardknocks6359
@yardknocks6359 Год назад
jm97240 yup I put it down right at day 6. It was a little grassy at that point, we just had a monsoon come through on day 4 and 5 so I didn’t want to go out those nights. I used a Winfield United TTTF Seed.
@jm97240
@jm97240 Год назад
@@yardknocks6359 I hear ya! It's ironic I always stress about the rain when seeding. I'd rather have no rain and control it myself with sprinklers. I put down some TTTF too and got some washout so trying to pre-germinate to fill some patches and it's getting a bit cold outside Philadelphia now.

LOL you say you can't tie the tops because it needs "air" you do realize there are millions of tiny holes that "air" can go through, right ?? ...... how do you think the water gets out from the soakings ???

Day 5 I would fire you and my grounds team would laugh at you making a mountain out of a mole hill comes to mind... jokes aside this is a bit long winded for my liking I look after 2 football pitches 11 cricket wickets 6 croquet lawns and a bowls green in the uk yes we pregerm seed but all we do is soak in a bucket for 24 hours next day mix in some dry seed and spread by hand like chicken feed that's it may lightly top dress the area and sling some fertiliser down we look for rain but if bone is coming we use the sprinklers we normaly see seedling by day 5 by week 2 we are cutting again our sports ground is in high demand we have some one of the best grass roots surfaces going outside professionally run clubs and we will.give a couple of them a run for there money

I have a good portion of my yard that’s on hills and valleys. With the previous seeding, I lost about 50% of my seed because of a large thunderstorm that washed it away. I wanted a sure fire way to expedite the process. This process worked flawlessly and I had a great germination rate. I do appreciate the advice though and will give it a try in my other zones. If you have a link to a video you did, I’d love to check it out!
