Eric from Painless sent me these updates on Classicbroncos.com, so I will put them here for anyone doing this: p. 45 of the manual shows how to connect the gear indicator light to a factory column. The ground on the column, this isn't a ground for the column, it's a ground for the horn button. The factory horn button was power activated. I didn't like the idea of a battery power source running through the column, so I changed it to a ground activation source. Even though the column is grounded the horn button isn't since it was originally supposed to have power. Harness routing, p. 20 shows you what to do for the firewall hole locations. This would have saved you from having to route it after your dash as in, and p.53 says to install grommets after the harness is routed through the holes. It's also mentioned on p. 57 to loosely install zip ties until all connections are made. This will allow you to still push, and pull the harness while routing while still holding the harness in place until you are ready to tighten the zip ties
I met Jon last October in Townsend Tennessee at the Bronco Celebration. He is as nice in person as he is on this Video. A genuine guy. Also owns a nice 75 Bronco.
Dude! Your timing couldn't have been better. I started my project in February right before my baby girl was born...now am just finishing up this weekend. Your videos have helped a bunch in the past couple of weekends. THANK YOU!!
I enjoy watching your videos. Very entertaining and informative. I did this on my 75 Bronco back in 2003 with a Centech harness. It's been flawless ever since. I know that filming and working is double the work, but it is much appreciated. Keep it up!
wow...this is amazing!!!!!! I'm inspired by your ability to do this!!! my wiring harness caught on fire on my 1995 Honda del sol ....smoke coming out of my inner consol...the wires behind my seat to middle were burned ,,,,, I love my car...my engine is is great condition and I even bought a new custom made transmission last oct... .....my mechanic can't fix it the burned wires ....so now its at a specialist ...electic guy {specialist) says it needs a new wiring harness...which he has to find...because they obviously don't make them anymore ........he wants to charge me 4,000 ......I have until Monday to make my decision...I can't imagine life without my del sol ...but I don't know what I will do yet...
What a great video. I’ve got a 70 F100 with some jakey wiring that I was terrified to deal with but this video gave me some confidence to try it. Thanks
👍 you I’m talking this in the spring on my 79 Ramcharger. Tired of fixing wiring issues on the trail or road trips. Mopar harnesses are almost nonexistent. So I need to figure out ignition switch and other Dodge specific items.
Nashville Early Bronco I’ve been watching this a little at i time this morning(auto correct on the phone sucks by the way), you did a great job on this. Even though I have a Dodge it’s all similar, I’m saving this. Electrical has always been my least favorite thing on old cars/trucks. Can’t wait to get my wiring replaced. Haven’t had a trip without some stupid issue. Thanks!
Yeeeeeeees!!!!! Thank you! All of your videos are so helpful. Can you do a video on how to replace the speed odometer and the cable that I thiiiiiink goes to your transmission???
Thanks for all you do, I have a 79 ford with 302/351 and it stopped running and Ive replaced all the egnition still wont start. Now Im thinking its timing chain, so Im following your directions, Hopefully I can get this done with out loosing any bolts. Thanks Again
SUCH A GREAT VIDEO! MY FIRST PAINLESS INSTALL WENT GREAT BECAUSE OF YOU. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GREAT ENERGY AND GUIDANCE! I have one issue if you could help me...the painless harness keep blowing turn signal fuse as soon as I turn the key. It has a flaming river steering column already in it. Do you think the column could be wired wrong from the previous installer? Appreciate you 🙏
You still happy with the Painless? I'm about to rewire my 76 bronco and am hearing good things on the Centech and the Painless. I'm torn as to which to do.
Thanks for your video. I'm installing a painless harness on my '77 Jeep CJ 7 that has a '78 Wagoneer 360 in it. I too am a little confused about the ballast resistor question. I believe I am running a very similar Duraspark system like yours. Jeep used Ford ignition systems during this period. Like you I am not running points. I wonder if I should use their ballast resistor or not?? Even if I do not need to do you think installing it would cause me any problems? I've heard like you said that the ballast resistors are only for systems running points, but have heard lots of other opinions. Did you find later on that you should have run the ballast resistor provided? Any help you can give would be appreciated.
Nashville Early Bronco cool. Thank you. I had a feeling you were going to say that. I’m trying to avoid it because i have an aftermarket dash cover that’s glued over the dash bolts. Might just have to bite the bullet and pull it out.
well I must be a 13 year old girl because I'm laughing! @NashvilleEarlyBronco came here because I'm trying to figure out which harness I need for my 89 coupe deville.
Bro I took my car to get the wiring harness replace a month later I still don't have my car...I called to get an update..." We're still fixed this wiring harness" and it's just a 94 GT Mustang 🤦🏿♂️ I'm getting my car today and getting it towed.
I could not agree with you more. Been working on cars for 28 years but never fooled with too much electrical. Following the Painless manual, I was able to rewire my 88 Grand Wagoneer in roughly 3 weeks. Had to build my own harnesses for cruise, power locks / windows, wipers, rear window, seats, and A/C. The manual is organized and explains each wire. Best advice in the manual is to remove the drivers seat!!! Customer service was very helpful too. Now I'm ordering a harness for my 83 C10.
So I have a 1975 f150 and I’m looking for a wiring harness to buy. I’m contemplating between painless and American auto wire. Painless performance is cheaper. Does anyone have any recommendations on which one to buy? Or any differences in the two?
Tho I'm rewiring a 72 Blazer with a Painless harness, this Bronco vid is very helpful. Thanks for video-ing your re-wire, as I personally know any project takes 3x longer to finish if you're video-ing! A+++++ video!
Bro I felt like this when I got my Fitech I could not remember who you was after I found you I made sure to subscribe so I truly understand what you’re saying
I wish I knew about this video with my first vehicle. A lot of the other videos are update videos on people’s project so they don’t actually show you how to do it. I’m currently doing my second vehicle a 1988 Ford F-150 and this is so much help
Great video, only one comment. Two of the most important sensors on the car (water temp and oil pressure) you reuse the old wire. Was this b/c it was hard to get to? Seems like a lot of work to skimp at that point. I'm using a painless harness to rewire my '69 camaro. Unfortunately nothing is stock. :(
Thanks for all your videos, they're fantastic! Just got mu '73 and am in the process of installing my painless harness now. Did you do all these upgrades before you actually drove it? Or just as you went along? Thanks again.
Thank you for saying that you made some mistakes. I am a complete novice and it's good to know that I'm not the only one who makes mistakes during the learning process and can still get the job done correctly.
Looks like a good kit EXCEPT most connections dont use the factory switch plugs, you just plug each wire into said switch individually. Thats really cheap! I just recently bought this same kit for my 76 f100. Im considering returning it. Didnt realize they don't make an option for factory plugs.
I’ve watched your video about 3 times now, I have a 1985 f150 XLT 4 speed manual transmission. Does the painless wiring harness already come with all the connectors/plugs, like your half moon plug that connects to the steering column/turn signals
I just now saw that you had replied, so gotta save all the connector pins. That’s what I have a hard time figuring out how to do since each one is different
Hey wz up! Great video. I just got my 1970 bronco out of body and paint and soon will be wiring it w the same kit. I had to replace the whole steering column because it was from a nissan patrol and it just looked wrong. One thing i dont have is the bracket that hold the column in place that goes behind the dash. Any odeas where to find it?
I can pay, can you help my daughter and I with a 86 Bronco wire harness? she's 20 and rebuilding it. it was mine. not a mechanic. :) thank you she is really excited.
I just pulled a 72 off a farm and will be working through many of these same issues soon. You can check out the video on my channel if you would like. Thanks for posting the how to videos- Mine needs wiring ASAP- it is toast!
Super effort on this great vid. I have a basket case bronco to do for my boss. Its an alternative to the Painless system with much poorer labeling. I’m not enthused. No manual for it either. Wish me luck. Thank you for the great job explaining this.
Hi Jon...great video as usual...very informative. Question...did you ever get an answer on your ballast resistor query. I am currently installing my new harness. I also am using the dura spark ignition set up (albiet I have a Centech harness). I was supplied a ballast resistor with the harness but ,like painless, the instructions are confusing weather its required or not. There was no ballast resistor in my original wiring. I believe our years used a resistive wire in the ignition circuit as opposed to a ballast resistor (from my research anyway). I guess painless and Centech didn't incorporate that resistive wire hence the need for a ballast resistor? Any insights you have are much appreciated. Keep up the great work!!!
Alright guys, could use some help here... Working on installing the '66-'77 Painless harness on my '71 model. However, my '71 has a few motor upgrades, one of which is the alternator. The current alternator appears to be a single wire alternator with one wire connected directly to the starter solenoid (+ side). The painless harness has four wires (black/red, orange, black/yellow, and red). The Painless installation manual illustrates installs for two styles of alternators, but not for a single wire alternator. I can't find a make/model on the alternator anywhere and it doesn't have any additional terminals (from what I can see) other than the one already connected directly to the solenoid. Any help/pointers here would be greatly appreciated. Nashville Early Bronco great video, I have watched it several times now through my installation process! Thanks again and keep posting.
Hmm... Yeah that is interesting. I don't have my book in front of me, but on a single wire alternator, you just want to make sure the one wire connected to the alternator is the wire running back to the battery (maybe the black red). I think one of the other wires runs the voltage gauge on the dash and I forget what the 3rd wire is for. Hope that helps.
So much great information! My dad has an earlier ’70s model of the original Bronco sitting in his yard that he swears up and down that he’s going to get road worthy. Granted, he’s in his 70s , so I take what he says with a grain of salt. I’ve been trying to get him to pass it on to me, but so far he’s reluctant. I believe I’ll wind up with it eventually and am already researching how to restomod it. I appreciate all of your videos and the information I learn from them….
Thanks for doing the video. Simply because I’m getting ready to do the same thing on my 66 Mustang. Some things apply, some don’t. I believe I’m going with a different manufacturer of the harness, not a price issue, but the others offer newer replacement switches for your project. As time and wear use up the parts. Heat builds up resistance in the older switches and connections... I’m more of a fan of soldering the connections, but that s everyone choice. Any new harness is better than what was in there before! Thanks again.
Great video! I've been looking for something like this for my jeep wiring project. I'm working on an 87 wrangler, and it has the ford style solenoid and duraspark. I'm having an issue getting the engine to turn over. is there a way you can detail how you connected yours when you cut out and swapped wires? you can email me or respond here. I really appreciated it!
ok. great Videos! I've been binging lately on everyones videos and these are some of the most practical, with just enough engagement to keep you listening! ALBERTA/CANADA. 70 BRONCO that i have had for wow 12 yrs now. now everyone wants one. lol
Nice Job. I've been watching all of your videos. I'm from New Brunswick, Canada, and bought a 71 Bronco from California last summer. These videos are helping me prepare for this summer. Thing is garaged at the moment for the winter.
+Brian's Bronco Adventura I was having issues. Primarily the dash, none of the gauges or lights worked on the dash. Headlights flickered, had a section of the tail harness that was pitched and had wires exposed. My engine bay had random wires from the PO that didn't go anywhere but were tied into the loom... stuff like that
@@NashvilleEarlyBronco hmm. Not sure yet. It's all original and uncut so I'd hate to do to much. Probably start with making it a driver and go from there.
Removed it completely and laid the two side by side. Then moved anything the old harness had to the new harness (if the new harness didn’t already have it).
Nashville Early Bronco when taking the harness out does the main part of it come off the dash and 2 looms from the firewall and a loom that goes back to the taillights?
Nashville Early Bronco does the loom that goes to the rear lights mount on the frame or is it under the carpet? Mines a 76 so i don’t think it be different than yours
A lot. I don’t remember but it was over a few weeks. But I’m working on my bronco nights and weekends while my wife and 3 kids sleep. And trying to film everything it always take sooo much longer
That’s pretty quick if you were only working on it on nights and weekends! I plan to rewire mine and I’m familiar with wiring because I do car audio all the time and feel confident but I know surprises can always show up that’s why I’m trying to get as much help and advice as possible 😂 could you give me a basic example of how the wiring is routed? I know half the wiring goes behind the dash but as far as how the other parts are routed like the back end and engine/transmission I’m not sure of thanks!
All the wiring starts behind the glove box and goes across the dash to the gauge cluster. From there some runs back out to the passenger side of the engine bay and some runs out the drivers side. It’s really not complex. It’s a lot of making connectors and heat shrinking. Most of my time was spent trying to get all the wire looking tidy, zip tying everything.
