I find myself wondering why step thru bikes arent more popular. I continually hear stories of folks buying 26x4 fat tire ebikes and they are too big for them to ride.

As a person who is 6'2, I have finally found the usefulness of a step-through.

I’m 57 and retired both from the military and law enforcement and I have a step-thru and everyone that sees it calls it badass. It’s a fun, comfortable ebike. My wife is short and a cancer patient and she has one too. It’s the reason she got an ebike because they are so big for her but she can ride the step-thru. By the way, they are beginning to sell more and more especially to seniors and those with injuries and disabilities. Glad they are making them.

I'm 5'1", waiting on my Pace 500 ST to be delivered to my local shop later this month. I barely fit on the medium, so I got the small and will put the seat up a bit. I love that there's an option for a small frame with 650b tires and step through, options you can't get with other brands at this price. A winning combo for someone like me, a shortie who's young but unfortunately has garbage joints from lupus. The only downside to not having a top tube is having less area on the bike to mount stuff. I haven't noticed any flex on the ones I test rode, and I'm a pretty thicc person, though to be fair I'm not doing any intense mountain biking. I think time and physical necessity will change the aversion to step throughs. As people age and face increasing difficulty mounting and dismounting their bikes, and see others make the switch to step throughs, they'll reconsider their priorities and realize personal comfort & safety are more important than some outdated aesthetic macho ideal based on external affirmation.

Having the top bar makes the bike easier to grab and get up a few steps or to put on a bike stand or a bike carrier. As far as getting on, I lean the biker over and it's no problem with the top tube. It also gives me one more place to carry a few things like bungee cords or small items attached with straps. I do not think of step throughs as "girl's bikes" but more as uni-sex bikes for everyone.

Hey, I like your videos, I'm 52 with osteoporosis and severe graves disease. I just bought an electric bike last week and I really enjoy it. I bought a step-through bike, I agree, the step through looks way better and way easier to get on and off. I also customized my bike with a basket, bottle holder, mirror, horn/alarm system and blue tooth speaker for music :)

I had the black step over ordered but after your other video I cancelled the order. Now I have the m/l red step through ordered. It’ll only delay my initial order by 4 days. I’m really glad I switched plus I’m getting the color I wanted. I’m 47 and 6’ tall also so stepping over wasn’t really an issue but why torture myself. Would be a little tougher with a bag on the back like you said.

It is to protect the Crown Jewels. The design has been engineered to minimise damage- if we all went girlie and then hit a sidewalk or forgot what break was what on a girls bike- we would shoot totally impeded to the solid handlebar post up front, rendering us unable to ever have offspring of our air and possibly incompetent. Definitely will need viagra - guess that’s not so bad now since it’s readily available but still, so you can ride a GIRLS bike?? Totally not worth it.

You didn’t hear John Wayne going: “Ohh naw Il need to swing my leg all the way over that mules back” Or cries to: “Cut a portion out of my horse so it’s easier to slip my leg over to the opposite saddle. Yes I hear you, the horse will suffer horrendous pain but it’s the 1800’s, we don’t really care!” Guys riding girls bikes are that equivalent of a hypothetical John Wayne I just painted for you and it wasn’t pretty was it.

i think that you nailed it when you guessed that many folks that are buying e-bikes are older, from the generation when step through's were marketed as "girl's bikes". I have to say that the time, back when I was a teenager, when my pedal broke, it would have been much less painful if I had been riding a "girl's bike". Unfortunately I wasn't.

As a child of the 80's, there was always the stereotype that step thru bikes were for girls. I actually got teased as a child for riding my sister's bike on occasion. Personally, I didn't care as long as I was having fun out riding... and I was. As I got older, that stereotype eventually went on the wayside. As for the Aventure, I'm torn between the step over (large) and step thru (M/L) versions. In comparison, both versions have the same reach length from saddle to handlebars, wheelbase length and the same head tube length. The step over allows for more standover height and saddle height. Being that I'm 300 lbs and 5' 9" in height, I can fit both bikes comfortably and I love that they can both carry up to 400 lbs. If I were to get the step over version, I would get the large frame bike in camo green. If I were to go for the step thru, I would definitely get the step thru in electric red. I've done my research into this particular bike, but for some reason, I just can't decide which version to go with. I'm just hoping that when I decide to pull the trigger, the Aventon will feel like a large bike to me.

I'm glad you have fun with the step throughs and I think its fine for people to that like that style. However step thru frames just aren't a frame style that I like. It may be due to what bike I thought were cool when I was young and that has carried over to what I like in looks now. For me I just like the more classic step over look more. Its like looking at a 2 door jeep vs a 4 door jeep you just have a preferences for one look over the other. As far as age well I'm over 50 and am 5'10 so the step over isn't to big for me.

Your point about having to really hike up to get over a rear rack with a bag on it has confirmed my decision to get the step through Sinch. Also, the conflict with the latch on the step over version is a valid point as well. My wife just had hip surgery so the step through is the way to go for her once her rehab is done. We’ll be taking delivery in another day so we’ll find out soon enough how we like the ebike experience. Just for me at first anyways…

I wholeheartedly agree that the step-thru makes all the sense in the world, particularly if you are a 76 year-old dude like me. I bought a Trek Townie Go 5i back in October and I’ve put 1,500 miles on it since then. I’ve fallen a few times, but main reason I have fallen is trying to get on the darn thing. I’ve finally learned to lay the bike nearly on its side while holding on to the inner portion of the bars and then step over it, pulling the bike up under me as my right leg hits the ground. That kind of solved it. I just ordered a Himiway Zebra, and, guess what-I ordered the “girls’” version. Actually, I think we have to educate the biking world and the enthusiasts that “girls’” bike is kind of a misnomer these days. So, again, I enjoyed what you had to say about this.

In the past 100 years or longer everyone including the Manufacture has claimed step-through bikes as Girls bikes, there for 99% of men will not purchase a Step-Through Bike due to being afraid of someone making fun of their manhood. Me and a lot of people these days are starting to see it slowly but surely the other way around. Now days I would buy a Step through for me and my wife, I am so short legged I can barely straddle a crack in the sidewalk, so a step through would be in my favor for sure.

Three reasons: 1 sometimes I like to take a more relaxed sitting position on the bar instead of the standard lean over position on the seat when coasting, 2 it helps prevent my knees from knocking into each other, 3 I can hold more things on the bar
@Niniel28b
@Niniel28b 2 года назад
You *sit* on the bar! :O I can only imagine the pain I would be in if I did that, but good for you if you can tolerate that. I also prefer an upright position though, so I have a bike where that is the standard position (Dutch bike), but I totally see that that is less versatile of course, since I'm then stuck with that position and can't shift to the more forward leaning position. But still... man, I can't get over the idea of how much I would hurt if I tried to sit on the bar - maybe the ones I've seen with the crossbar just had thinner bars than yours does. I kind of hope so. As for knees; Have you tried a step through? Unless your knees knock into the crossbar too and that's what keeps them from hitting each other, (which I then imagine doesn't help much since they still hit something fairly solid,) then they also shouldn't hit against each other without the crossbar.

For me, it had nothing to do with it being a girl's bike, and all to do with the rigidness of a top tube. Most top tubes these days are slanted downwards towards the sea and quite easy to swing a leg over anyways. In some cases I want to go a little off-road and having a step through gives me anxiety that the frame will flex. Perhaps it never will, but having a single bar hold all my weight seems like a big task when going over bumps. The top tube give me a little assurance that the frame will never flex.
@Soladaddy
@Soladaddy 2 года назад
I'm 6'3" and usually swing a leg over the rear tire and up onto the seat of an XL bike 22.5" seat post. The top tube is way too high to go over it in front of the seat. Two weeks ago I rode, for the first time, an ebike that was and older model with the battery pack on a rear rack sitting over the tire. A sharp battery corner caught the backside of my knee, leaving a nice wound. Had I stepped thru the frame in front of the seat, there wouldn't be a healing knee. Also am looking for a rear rack so the days of swinging over might come to and end. I agree that the step thru ebikes look cleaner, so maybe a step thru is the next bike.

I’ve ordered a camouflage green, step-over Aventure. At the time of purchase, earlier this month, they estimates it would take 24 days before it would ship and an additional 3 to 5 business days before it would arrive here in Florida. They’re a hot commodity right now. Went with the step-over model because I can’t help but think the frame has a little more rigidity with the crossbar. I weigh over 200 lbs and expect to do a little bit of off-roading when the road conditions warrant it. Honestly, I also like the looks of the step-over model a little better too, but will have to say the red color on the step-through version looks absolutely beautiful and I did consider buying it also.

It was a two part decision for me to get a step thru E-bike. I had owned a normal(?) - non-Ebike, for several years, and when I turned 70 I was having to lean the bike over to about 30 degrees to get my foot over the bar of my Men's bike. I tolerated it as something I'd have to live with if I wanted to keep riding. Then I had heart issues, wound up with a pacemaker, and started getting tired out after a few miles and started riding less and less. We moved to an area with numerous bike trails, and I wanted to ride but was afraid to venture more than three miles one direction. E-bikes were getting more popular, and I finally decided it was time to take the leap to a cheater bike. After months of shopping, and reading and doing more shopping, and more reading, I decided to purchase a not to expensive bike, and also decided that a girls bike is called a Step-thru bike because the manufacturers are marketing it to both sexes, and I should be a man, and get over the belief that step-thru means "Girls" bike. I bought my step-thru E-bike, and have not regretted it for a minute.

That crossbar can be very painful on men. And to be honest, women are more flexible legwise. So nowadays, the whole crossbar thing is backwards. Frames are plenty strong enough. If hard-core moutain biking, the crossbar can help muscle about, but otherwise...stepthru!

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Troxus. The step over version is sold out in black so I was debating between getting the blue step over and the black step through. My main hesitation is worrying about the long term durability of the step through. They've got that little bit of extra metal welded at the bottom for structural support, but I would imagine that not having a cross bar at the top would greatly diminish the structural integrity of the bicycle. Triangles are strong. I'm probably gonna just go with the step through, I don't really like the blue color and it's got a 2 year warranty. By then hopefully I'll be done with college and able to afford a new bike anyway

To answer your big question, if you look at a history of bicycle design, the diamond style, or "safety" frame has been around for 100 years or so. The step through style was adopted for women riders wearing skirts. Hard to imagine today how controversial it was back then for women to ride a bike.

I like to put a frame bag, step thru you can't. Also, if you transport your bike on a bike carrier you need that bar.

E bikes to me are about looks, style and power. Is a step thru a traditional style for women, yah! But with fat tires, a heavy duty frame, and a 750 watt motor it’s no longer a woman’s bike.

I noticed your water bottle holder is on the handlebars. I saw another video where the man said theater bottle holder on the step through Adventure model can get in the way when you are stepping through. Do you find this to be the case?

Try being 270 lb with a step through and hit rough terrain. That frame will eventually crack

@@CitizenCycle925 I don't honestly no and I wasn't going to find out so I went with Step over. I suppose if you are average weight of around 150 to 200Lbs the step through would be fine but anything over 200Lbs I'd be nervous with step through. They state max weight is 275lbs on both Step through and step over.

I sought an ebike rated for higher weight tolerances for that reason, though I only plan on riding paths and greenways with my ebike.

Do how sturdy does the step over feel at 270? Unfortunately I’m 290 (gained agate having COVID) but working on getting my hit back to under 250. The weight limit on all Aventon bikes is 250 for the rider plus 50 cargo. Even though I have read that doesn’t mean a rider can be 300 with zero gear. I however am thinking of taking my chances as I am not planning on jumping it and hopefully will be under 250 in the next 4-6 months. Thoughts?
@thequadrider
@thequadrider 3 года назад
@@jeffbucknam7393 I'm at 275, my ebike is rated at over 300 and even though I feel it not being as solid as a diamond frame (step thru dynamics do feel different I will admit) it doesn't feel weak. It just took a few miles to get used to the feeling.

I didn’t get the step thru with the level, but my girlfriend does, i wish I did. But tue level commuter comes in 3 sizes compared to the step thru, I didn’t want to take a chance on getting a M/L and regret if it is smaller. I actually like access to a small accessory bag in the non step thru. and my large was easy to mount a Abus folding lock. I can’t find anywhere to mount one on her bike. And why didn’t they add a water bottle holder like in the Himiway? Ughh. My next bike will be a step thru.

Growing up I always wondered why girls bikes were girls bikes,they make so much sense for men also, traditional "men's" or "boys" bikes are a deathtrap for testicles.

Yeh I think it’s just backward thinking. I am only 1.65m and I have a step through on my e-bike. The only benefits of a top tube really are it adds to the bike’s stability and easier to mount on back of a car with a rack. But my e-bike is plenty stable enough and I could always get a false cross top tube if I wanted to rack it.

So true i have a Velotric Nomad 1 Bike High Step 6 weeks ago i was riding and pushed off to get the bike started in motion and lost my balance i fell to the right and hit the ground and fractured my elbow i think because of the high step bar caught my leg on the way down and slammed me into the ground if i had a step through i could have just released the handle bars and let the bike fall. I am going to change to the cyrusher do you recommend anything better that has a low step through? Thanks

When I was a kid growing up I used to ride a girl's adult bike when I didn't have a bike at the time until I had a dirt bike but the girls is all fight it didn't bother me one bit. This bike is not made for just girls it's made for men too. I liked the bike that you stepped through not lift your leg over the bar that's a little bit hard I have a trend bite it's kind of hard to get my leg Over the Bar cuz I have a bike rack on the back and if I had something like this it would be awesome but I don't have nothing like this and I do like the red collar so this fight to be made for a woman or man played me like nowadays premix made for a man or woman it doesn't matter who rides it as long as it is writable I do kinda like that red color but if I had my way mine will be a neon yellow for emergency at night time only the meantime I like this video and this bike

I don`t like the look of a step through. I do like the look of a step over. If you don`t over stack the rear rack there`s no problem at all getting on and off the bike. I`m 63 and been riding bikes and motorcycles all my life. I ordered a green Aventon stepover in a mid frame.

It would be cool if they made a storage pod thing in the middle like the rads. I don’t think it looks like a woman’s bike at all. As long as the frame is strong who cares. That’s a good idea, next time I am on the bike path I’m going to eat a huge cheese burger haha. The roadies aren’t going to like me lol.

just ordered Electric Bike Company model R which is step thru.. feelin a little insecure about the girl factor but its a badass bike and has 3" tires... the bruiser version (model C) is sexier looking for some reason but the R was more of a hybrid (MTB and Cruiser). check it out, cant wait to get mine.. maybe you did a review already but you can custom build them too!!!

I ride with a Tagalong bike for my 7 year old connected to my seat post. My main concern is, would the step-thru will not be as stiff to haul the extra weight connected to the seat post? Would the Tagalong cause extra frame stress on a step-thru than a normal triangle frame? I have a 28" inseam and would get a step-thru, but the unknown of having a Tagalong and riding through dirt roads or trails, causing extra stress is the only thing holding me back. Any thoughts from the community will be greatly helpful.

If you are going to off road the step thru wouldn’t be able to handle the xtra torsion on the frame. Otherwise I agree step thru is better for type of riding your doing on rail trails or roads

I always thought there was more strength having the top tube. But I do think that riding at the speed that you were I don't think having the top tube would make a difference. And to be honest I would be concerned of it looking like a girl's bike. Maybe after riding one I will change my mind.

Trust me everyone you are driving past on it smiling or waving to say hello is thinking inside “what is that grown ass man doing riding a little girls bike?!” And they will likely phone all there friends to tell them what they saw. Some of the older people smiling at you might even have a WhatsApp group and i wouldn’t be surprised if they have already shared pictures of you cruising around on your girls bike. All you need is a pink bow 🙇‍♀️

Does the throttle on the aventon work from zero mph? Older aventon's did not, you must pedal before the throttle will work.
