Ditto! I saw The Wiz when I was in my 20’s, and she blew me away! I’m 70 now, and I still get the chills whenever anybody sings that song. Melinda Doolittle came out 3rd on American Idol, Season 5?, and her version of the song was pretty amazing, as well.

Everytime I hear this song I reminds me of growing up and missing my mother and granny and friends that has passed, She has a connection with people with this song, Love it and cry everytime I hear it.
Nobody can sing this like Stephanie! This is an example of how she owns this song. If it were ever a question, watch this until the end and let it carry you through her triumphant build up on the "when I think of home" part when she takes the audience to church towards the middle/end of the song. Sinbad comes out and gives it up to her. That's when it really gets going then! By the time it's done, there should be no questions. Signed, sealed and delivered! This is her song! He had to get her back out hit that whole outro one more time just to make sure you get it. Probably one of the best renditions of it ever. Stephanie Mills for sure enough wins. (She has the meanest growl in the world. One of my favorite things about her. She hit you with that growl and it's all over with after that!)

There are no words I remember when I first saw this I literally hit the floor she sung this and she meant every word chaka Khan is my top female singer and Stephanie is number two.after many decades this still leaves my breathless and this still blows my cold away I wish the new singers of today could see this and she can really show the newbies how it's really done.
One of those magical times when the groove and the energy are so right and you just wanna ride that moment forever. If I remember correctly, Stephanie was sick as a dog and had a raging high fever but had committed to performing and, like the trained theater pro she is, knew the show must go on and ate the damn thing alive. You can see she's sweating bad and you can hear how ragged her voice is at points, her control isn't as tight, the power notes aren't as full in sound, and a couple times she just loses the note altogether for a second, but dammit, even sick half to death she's ten times the singer anybody else is and she STILL sounds great. She still went out there sang for like ten minutes, and had that whole beach in the palm of her hand. Mark of a TRULY great performer. And so powerful that Sinbad was moved to come out and give that great speech off the cuff, got folks out there cryin and huggin strangers from all the love in the air, and she sings AGAIN. Incredible. Moments like this are so rarely captured on recording, and it's such a treasure. This was on here for years and then disappeared. Thanks for sharing it again.

I watched this when it aired on HBO. I also taped it. I can't tell you how many times I have seen this performance. There is something so enchanting and regal about Ms. Stephanie Mills that since I was a little girl, she has spoken to my spirit musically. Her aura is phenomenal as well. She is the package of what grace is. Victor, thank you for uploading this video when you did friend. She will forever be Queen in my eyes along with a few other cherished greats.
