@@endangeredspecies8441 “These players are actually weaker in this era.” Lol!! On what do you base this ridiculous conclusion. These players have better weight training regimes and are physically just as big (if not bigger). That is a fact. For example, Reggie Miller played in that “physical” era and was all of 185 lbs. That is Curry’s weight and he is on the smallish size in this era. KG was an all-star in 97 at 6-11 220 lb. To put that in perspective, that is 25 lbs lighter than KD who is extremely skinny in the modern era. Regarding health, on what are you basing that these players don’t stay healthy? Again, they have all the medical and scientific advances. What evidence do you that they aren’t staying as healthy (or even healthier) as the average player from yesteryear?
@endangeredspecies8441
@endangeredspecies8441 2 года назад
@@Vaughndaleoulaw well let’s start with the players themselves who are constantly complaining about the schedule themselves Jasper. They already play in a weak era and as you so brilliantly pointed out they have better equipment, trainers, and nutrition then players of the past and can barely stay on court. So your “better,faster,stronger” player is constantly whining about the schedule/back to backs and is getting hurt more frequently? Yeah somethings not adding up here.
@Vaughndaleoulaw
@Vaughndaleoulaw 2 года назад
@@endangeredspecies8441 That doesn’t support a single one of your arguments. They are complaining because they know is taxing schedule increases injury risk (& shortens careers). But, that was true in the 80s & 90s as well. There is no evidence that they are staying less healthy than the players in yesteryear. And no evidence that they are physically weaker than players in the past. Players complain about it because they know the effects of the schedule, unlike dudes in the past. Teams are also complaining about it for the same reason, which is why they voluntarily rest guys. Are teams weaker than they were in the 80s and 90s? No, they are smarter. These players have 8 & 9-figure contracts. Why play dude in a back-to-back in December when you need him to be healthy in May and June.

I can answer this. What changed is the internet and Esports. Nobody wants to play football and basketball like they used to, everyone is playing video games. Every one. Around the world. These old playground sports are not what they used to be and they never will be again. Today, the real competition is in Esports, because that's what everyone is playing. And I was playing high school sports 15 years ago, you could see the interest dying and everyone was on video games.

JJ does raise a good point. But you can't even deny that basketball is played and called different. I personally think it has to do with something like the Malice in the Palace, where the league took an image hit. So it seems that a lot of physicality is taken out the game and that if course encourages more scoring and spacing on the floor. I do prefer the 90s because more of attention to detail on defense and more physical play.
@cmack17

The Malice in the Palace was not "physical basketball" Artest committed a normal routine shooting foul on a player driving to the basket. Ben Wallace then attacked Artest like a wild lunatic. Draymond Green is right in saying that not every 80's and 90's players were tough. Some people act like every player back in the 90's and 80's were all physical and intimidating, also acting like there are no players in today's game that will be quick to take your head off. The issue with today's NBA is the referees are so quick to call common fouls and flagrant fouls.

society in general in softer now than it was back in the days. so logic would tell you that nba players are also softer. add to that the fact that the game has become softer BECAUSE of the officiating you definitely have a softer game. Softer guys are allowed to exist in this era of basketball that would be weeded out in the 80's and 90's. Draymond is wrong. on average, nba players are softer now. Having said that, if you ever get a chance to watch these men play with court side seats you will see just how aggressive professional basketball players are. there are so many fouls and hits and bumps that aren't called. the tv does not do it justice. these are large, powerful men and basketball is a still a very physical game.

but many who lived and watched basketball back in the 80s and 90's had become accustomed to seeing the game be much more physical meaning the refs allowed a lot more contact than today. A lot of that stuff shouldn't have been allowed even back then but today the league is cutting much of that out and it seems like the players are "softer". I say no, the players in todays game aren't allowing themselves to be beat up on the court and would rather the game be determined by skill more so that brute strength. Players are getting paid a ton more and want to protect that and want to retire healthy. The same thing has happened in the NFL to an extent. More focus is being put on protecting the players and that's how it should be. Back in the day we thought defense meant knocking someone to the ground (Even out of the air). You take skill out of the game when you allow people to beat someone else up during a game.

You have to understand that different era requires different skillset because of different rules. You cant say that today's bigs are more skilled than the post era's bigs. Just being able to shoot 3 pointers is not the definition of being skilled. Today bigs have to learn to defend around the perimeter and stretch the floor. Aside from posting up, post era bigs have to do a lot of intangibles such as boxing out and handle tough plays. Toss a KD to the past, he will get slaughtered in the post area but dominate the range. Toss a Ewing to the present, he will own the post like Joel Embiid, but get crushed around the perimeter. As excited as we are, we can never compare different eras because different rules set the stage for each era.

@DoubleU_Nld
@DoubleU_Nld 2 года назад
@@DarrellC. I think many of the centres and big men from the 80s would struggle guarding elite pg's in space. I don't think its easier or harder, I think different rulesets favor different skillsets. Current rules favor switch-ability, shooting, and guarding in space. I think a guy like Larry Bird would be fine just as i think that Steph would be fine in the 80s ( that is if a coach would let the man shoot). I also think that traditional 80s and 90s bigmen struggle more in today's league as the pace and space of the modern game would run many centres and big men from the 80s off the floor. I agree that it's easier to score in today's game, but is it therefore easier to play? Defence has also significantly changed. The more rules you put on a defender the more difficult it is to actually guard an opposing team or player. Being allowed to handcheck gives an advantage to the defensive player, not being able to do that anymore means that you have to be better at screen navigation etc. You can therefore make the argument that defenders nowadays actually need more skills and that it's more difficult to play quality defence. In all the point is that comparing teams and players across era's is a futile effort due to different rules resulting in disrespect both ways.

But don't call it different for vets vs rookies vs stars vs regular season vs playoffs vs finals vs 1st 2 minutes vs last 2 minutes etc etc. But the simple fact is, there are 2 things that have come in in the Lebron era (not blaming him, just marking a time). Dudes complain any time they miss, or any time they hit a shot that is contested, even when the replay shows they were untouched. Dudes didn't do that in the 80s or 90s or even 00s. More recently, dudes will have someone graze their hair on a layup, and fall at the stanchion like a sniper took them out, holding their head, covering their face like one of their eyeballs is hanging out, waiting for the refs to call a flagrant. Yet 90 seconds later that same dude will be playing defense on the other end like NOTHING happened.
