I listened to this song on the radio driving to the beach with my toddler daughter. Every time I hear it I’m right back there and it tears my heart out. She is now a grown woman with children of her own, but I have my baby girl back whenever this song comes on. Thank you Stephen Bishop for this beautiful song!❤
That's what is so special about good music It can take you right back in time in an instant. When I hear this song I am transported back to the hospital with my new baby girl. In 1977
I am Black in my early 40's and have always enjoyed this song and others from our days in the 70's or 80's regardless of the artist colors. Forget what people think good music is good music.
The Drifters; Nat King Cole; Louis Armstrong; Earth, Wind and Fire; Aretha Franklin, Barry White, and so, so many other great Black artists. Good music is color blind. @@martyperkins1570
I had forgotten all about this song until I ended an email about a bad day I had with "On and on..." Then I thought - Hey, that's a song by Stephen Bishop... Man, I love this song... Poetry...
@Yordanos Tafla And yet you're HERE. Enjoy the vomit. [Sidebar re Tarantula Life Mean Bean reply: Millenials everywhere will be pissed that you have been lumped in with them].
I'm 45 now and my young children are exposed to this music all the time. They think its today's music and I just smile. We need more artists like these today!!
@@lisagilpen5501I’m 18 and love this song. 60s & 70s are my favorite decades for music and I love folk rock. The Beatles, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Allman Brothers Band, and Van Morrison are some of my favorites. I know multiple people my age that also love music from then, but I totally get your point. It does seem like most kids nowadays just listen to rap and hip hop, which I don’t necessarily have anything against, but I do have something against not giving classic rock a try! 😂
@@garymiller95 I listen mostly to music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s mostly classic rock, and I’m going to college for audio technology while making music like this. I will admit not all of what I write is exactly in this style since I grew up listening to video game music which has a lot of jazz and classical elements so those tend to seep into my music as well, but I’m not making anything like today’s pop or hip hop. 😁
I am only 15 and i love to listen to music like this. It was a gem that i found this music and its on repeat all day i thank stephen bishop for giving us such a comforting song to listen to❤️
I was just a little boy when the song came out. For some reason, it’s one of the songs that stays with me. I love the music and his vocals have so much emotion. But the lyrics are very poetic. Very underrated.
I was born in Brazil and I listened to this song when I was 16 many times and it brought me tears, but I didn't have the knowledge of the language. I just heard it on the radio 7 on 70's today and it brought me so many good memories. I guess I was connected to the soul of the sound. It definitly has a soul.
I love how in the 3rd verse he changes the object of attention to himself (rather than other people) and changes the chorus phrase from "crying" to "dying". This is masterful work. This song is pain and pleasure.
Wow! I am 45 and born in 1971! Just heard this song for the first time tonight! How did I miss this one?!! I was 5 I think when this song came out! Please forgive me Stephen Bishop for not ever taken you seriously! Now I'm listening to every single of his! Awesome song!!
Listening because American Idol just recently offered Stephen Bishop $500 to use the entire song within the show (Season 23), in ads, among other things.
Thing song was released and I remember all those silly but innocent crushes and incidents I pined about but I got over easily. This sad song like others consoled me gently. But I think of others with their silent pain and depression and how many tried and have taken their lives..and the anxiety and depression of my now teenage sons generation and friends..and this song literally made me burst into tears.
Long time ago, more then 30 years back, Stephen Bishop whas here in holland, i whas the driver of him with a limousine. I get a LP from him still i have. Very nice man so friendly and good we have also eat in a restaurant on 1 table with him.
Stephen Bishop was the folk singer sitting on the stairs at the Delta Fraternity in the 1977 film Animal House. John Belushi grabs his guitar, smashes it to pieces, and apologizes. Absolutely true.
I remember being a little girl in 78 or 79, and it was bedtime. My sister and I always listened to the radio to sleep, and this song came on. Music was the only thing that soothed me and this was one of them…Sigh. Stephen sure is handsome here!
Music grabs the soul and the heart and the brain and the gut. If you love it, whatever "it" is, then it's right for you. Glad you can finally share.... and spread the happy :)
Stephen Bishop never got his due for this song. I'm surprised a dude like Jimmy Buffett or Kenny Chesney hasn't covered "On and On" as of yet. It's a classic love-beach genre tune that is right in their musical sweet spot! Awesome song; have always loved it!
@@woofersagainstviolence5349 Stephen will tell you Kenny Rankin's version of ON AND ON was best. If you've not heard it, you're in for a treat. Thanks Potch, and thanks Woofers. Coincidentally, celebrated elsewhere this day elsewhere [search] " Great Melody, Great Lyric, Great Rendition, Songwriting Workshop, Harmony Central " p.39
@@MarkBlackburnWPG Hey Mark, 😊 Old is gold an we 70's Hippies got the best 2 decades on this planet; that will ever be!! It was all Peace, love, nature and sharing between guys an Gals. Actually Kenny Rankins version is what I was privileged to cruise to. It was only later, that I learned that Stephen Bishop was the author. Both are great, but the guy who had it coming out of his creative being; just has to recognised. Peace my friend. 👌👌
Don't know why, this is my favorite song ever. I am 52 years old, I heard it the first time when I was in High School. I married when I was 18 and my husband, Dave died when I was forty. This is not a song that is very popular. But, when I am having a rough time in life it starts playing on my 70s station. He lets me know he is watching over me and things will be okay.

"Got the sun on my shoulders and my toes in the sand, my woman's left me for some other man aw but I don't care I'll just dream and stay tan, toss up my heart to see where it lands on and on..." .... great lyric, thnx Steven B. - chicken soup for the soul a few times through the years.
So enjoy Stephen Bishop. Just saw him perform in Laguna Beach last Christmas, and the next show in early April, 2019 at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. Great talent, songwriter, singer, and arranger. And the guy can really sing.

I was 19 when this song played,if I didn't here a line right I made my own,on the ladder part I never heard the Sinatra part,I always thought it said, puts on some natural,an starts to cry,oh Sinatra makes much more sense, lol, the 70s music can never be topped.ty,connie
Scaping from this sad reality and undending sufferings in life is hard as hell but thanks to this musicians and this beautifully written songs, everything seems nice and calm-at least for a moment.
Hey Jay, hang in there bro we all been there. Some of us still are? One foot after the other, day to day.. Just find nice reassuring 60s to 80s easy listening to chill to. Still keeps me going thru the bumps. Peace Buddy. 😃
Hey Jay, if yur still hangin on the thread, here is a truly beautiful song from the great Neil Young for you to chill to. Worlds best lovesong in my mind. It's called Harvest Moon. All the best my friend. 👍 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xMjDc8MJotU.html
what a song! Still cant listen to it without tearing up. Such good memories of fun times with my brother sadly passed away this year. takes me back to better times....
I remember watching 👀 this show as a kid, and I truly wish I could go back for just one day and tell everyone that I truly miss them and just how much I loved them it was truly the Best Time of our lives and we didn't even know it AMEN
WOW! Sounds just as good live as opposed to the studio...Great natural smooth voice, wonderful beautiful vocal melody, beautiful background vocal harmonization, excellent acoustically sound mike settings, great appearance...Mr Bishop was surely a woman magnet with that one. Clearly one of the best songs EVER RECORDED. MAN!!! THAT'S GREAT MUSIC. SIMPLY SO WONDERFUL. Great performance and song. Covered all bases.
Wow-- these guys are so attractive! And the white suit . . . glad I lived in this era. I am proud of my generation. The men were progressive, sweet, brilliant, creative. Nothing like romantic nostalgia. I am really happy to see this
He actually married a beautiful actress named Karen Allen and was not a sexual predator like Mick Jagger. Sex addiction was common among many rock stars and this is how bad it got:John Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas was incestuous with his own daughter McKenzie. Life is not about sex and being addicted to your own body chemicals: Serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine and oxytocin. It really isn't. Do your self a favor and learn to care about yourself and others, learn to respect women and yourself
Although your point in correct and your heart is true, you cannot win this fight. Objectifying and belittling women is part of what popular media is all about. If women don't feel bad about their appearance, no one buys lipstick, or leg razors, tummy tucks, or 10,000 dollar Armani dresses. The first thing anyone must do to escape the constant nagging indoctrination into the cult of woman hating and female inadequacy is to stop watching television. Since no one will ever do that (for reasons that altogether escape me-TV is still the Great Intellectual Wasteland-it is unlikely that objectification of woman as a whole-and as individuals-will ever cease. Next, a woman must give up Cosmo, and all the Home Beautiful Magazines-who ALSO push that same false image of the "Perfect Housewife", or "The Perfect Lover", which suggests subliminally that you are not. We are fed falsehoods and degrading opinions about ourselves for one reason only: to sell us products we do not need and cannot afford. Give up on that stupidity and, I hope, manufacturers and publishers will start pushing more goods and services that we DO need. The reason they don't already? Simple; profit margins on necessary goods are not as great as the profits made on luxuries misrepresented as necessities. "Designer" Clothes . . . not necessary. Credit Cards? one of the most amazing scams ever run on the helpless and hapless. Buy Now, Pay Later? Ruinously expensive way to do anything. I point fingers here at Ownership in general and owners in specific: no matter how they disguise their culpability in our financial distress, they are the whole cause of it.
A real human that can sing and play an instrument and write great music. Where have they gone? Hearing this again brings so many happy memories and days that are gone for good!
Never thought someone singing the simple words of "on and on" could sound so smooth, clean and crisp. Absolutely amazing. Rock on forever Stephen Bishop.
nossa! há quanto tempo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! adorei ouvir e recordar meus velhos batles e amores. Parabéns pela jóia rara poste mais relíquias tá? abs da Cris
I couldn't get to the store fast enough to buy this record on a 45 when I first heard it on the radio. I remember him singing this song with Natalie Cole on some television show in the late 70s. Great singer and beautiful song

One of my favourite songs my mother would play in the car when we'd cruising around . Be almost 2 years since she passed away thank you so much for showing me this song such beautiful lyrics ❤️
+John Rotella Bishop didn't write this from personal experience. He stated: "I write from titles usually. I was walking down to the corner grocery store in Silverlake where I was living at the time and I came up with the idea of 'On and On.' My landlady had a lot of exotic flowers all around the house and I wanted to write something from somewhere else like Jamaica."

This takes me back...I remember hearing this a lot as a kid in the late 70's. My parents would always have the easy listening station playing in family car and this was a staple back then.
Stephen Bishop has such a soft, smooth voice, he was one of my favorites during the mid-70s, It Might Be You from Tootsie is my all-time favorite by him...
