Stephen John Fry (born 24 August 1957) is an English comedian, actor, writer, presenter, and activist.
After a troubled childhood and adolescence, during which he was expelled from two schools and spent three months in prison for credit card fraud, he secured a place at Queens' College, Cambridge, where he studied English literature. While at university, Fry became involved with the Cambridge Footlights, where he met his long-time collaborator Hugh Laurie. As half of the comic double act Fry and Laurie, he co-wrote and co-starred in A Bit of Fry & Laurie, and took the role of Jeeves (with Laurie playing Wooster) in Jeeves and Wooster.
Fry's acting roles include a Golden Globe Award-nominated lead performance in the film Wilde, Melchett in the BBC television series Blackadder, the title character in the television series Kingdom, a recurring guest role as Dr. Gordon Wyatt on the crime series Bones, and as Gordon Deitrich in the dystopian thriller V for Vendetta. He has also written and presented several documentary series, including the Emmy Award-winning Stephen Fry: The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive, which saw him explore his mental illness. He is also the long-time host of the BBC television quiz show QI.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 189 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

After a long, sleepless night of studying, I was offered a seat at one of Stephen Fry's talks . . . .and there I was, struggling to stay awake. I'm still famed as 'The Back-Row Bounder.'" He's a man from an upper-middle class background who almost fucked his life up in his late teens but managed to claw it back with good connections to Oxbridge dons and hard work. He's not a God. He's not a genius. He's a man who was born into privilege, squandered it, clawed it back, came good and continued to suffer publicly. Like him all you want; but get your head out the dude's arse. He might like the odd penis in there at times, but I'm sure he can't accommodate an entire human skull.

I have to express that as an Indian chartered accountancy student I feel his views about "freedom of thoughts" are absolutely genius yet required and the way he addressed Oscar Wilde as King of Bohemia and Prince of all students was so poignant but here in India especially in CA course we are left with everything from misery to straight grown existential crisis and not with quality time for us to grow as an individual and experience that freedom of thinking hence acting like or rather being a bohemian is seen as we are flirting with our own future in horrific way. There isn't enough time for students to develop their own morals, values, and even thinking process. Everything is being told by anybody else; and it is not about 'how we should develop our brains, thinking process, values so that we could live with ourselves knowing what we are and accepting it' but it is about 'what we should do to live happy' and I don't know how this homogeneous living principles going to lead individual's life towards the contentment he so dearly hopes to achieve considering his individual differences. I'm not saying it is all fucked up; I am saying there is scope for betterment and for that matters wheel should be given in the hands of student or person who cares for them with his heart. Anyway I am sincerely thankful to this channel for these amazing videos and blessed that I'm in position to enjoy them.

I've spent almost half a decade going through academic books, standards and sections and what not. But RU-vid, no matter what anyone says has been a source of immense knowledge and ideas for me. And lately I've been trying to focus more on my wellbeing, especially mental, and doing things I love, reading articles and watching videos which intrigue me. And I've recently started looking for Stephen Fry's content (highly recommended to me) and I simply can't stop. Thank you for making me feel like I'm not the only one. P.S. I'm a student at ICAI as well. Hope I don't remain just a student . 😁

I don't like the fakeness of black and white film, that's why I think young people skip it. Not because it's black and white, but it's a idyllic love story wich makes me puke my guts out. Give me real, give me raw with all of lives imperfections and none of the traditional cultural values. Celebration of life, not ideals.
@CosmicTeapot
@CosmicTeapot 3 года назад
@@dadikkedude That's got less to do with the aesthetics of the film (black and white) and more to do with the historical context. What you describe emerged during the sexual/cultural revolution of the 1960s. The era of Casablanca is a period where love stories did happen that way, which we find cheesy today but was the standard back in the day. Ever asked your grandpa how he asked your grandma out? It was full of courting and cheesy flirtatious lace-worked exchanges.

I guess the reason those old literature including films are being forgotten is because people, with shame include me, are not striving for the ticket itself. @rickhenderson2970
@rickhenderson2970 5 лет назад
Agreed, but not for the reasons you say. It's pure numbers: film didn't really come into maturity as an art-form until the 20s, as the great films before that--like those of DW Griffith--were outliers and not representative of the dreck from that time that nobody today, even hardcore cinephiles like myself, would want to watch. Color came in in the 50s, though for about a decade (more in some countries) there was a mix of films made in B&W and color, so we can say that we have about 30-40 years (depending on where you want to start/end) of film mostly in black-and-white. Meanwhile, we've now had almost 60 years of film primarily in color! I've seen over 8000 films in my lifetime. I love and adore a great many films in B&W, but I can assuredly say that the ratio of my beloved color to B&W films isn't 15/85. I also dare say that if you look at any reputable list of the greatest films ever made like Theyshootpictures--which is really a meta-list made from all other reputable lists--the ratio would be nowhere near 85/15. In fact, going through TSPDT's Top 100 (out of 1000), I count 53 B&W films and 47 color. 50/50 sounds much more reasonable than 85/15, but even that I suspect will tilt towards color as time goes on.

I don't like his apologetic stance on Wagner. If you love something as profound, be proud of it and stand up for it.

The music exists because of the man and his experiences.. It does not make sense to decouple the two.

He is actually apologetic for the music too because he is in front of a young crowd... He is not at all like this in his documentary.

Archishman Ghosh You are saying that unless one likes or approves of Wagner the man, one cannot like the music that he wrote. Is that really what you are saying? If so, you live in a different world from the rest of us.

I did not say you have to like the man to like his music. But one should realize that the music is there because of his experiences in his life and his personality. You cannot compartmentalize the human psyche into, "oh that's his personality and its trash" and then say the music came out ethereally from some other plane of imagination. It was his nationalism, unbent and arrogant belief in himself and all his complexes that mashed up and drove him into creating an entirely different world. The same goes for a lot of other composers. You wouldn't accuse Chopin for the same.

Stephen Fry taking a shit on his educators is really a pretty low blow. You don't learn everything from your friends, a tremendous amount comes from your teachers and the structure of the academic environment as a whole. He is also assuming that one will have a dynamic circle of friends, all of whom are engaged and interested in areas that overlap with their studies. I haven't found that to be the way at all. Not anymore. People aren't interested in being academically or intellectually stimulated. They want to take the fastest, most direct and least interesting way through, which means making no waves and having no convictions, get their paper, make their money, and spend the rest of their time making themselves look impressive on social media. He is so badly out of step with the times and he doesn't even seem to know it.

Mr Fry is of course brilliant, but it's making me physically uncomfortable to watch that total imbecile in the background yawn, roll his eyes, and act above the whole thing. I feel this way not because this is Stephen Fry, though that surely makes it worse, but because no person deserves that level of disrespect. It takes a lot of courage to give a talk. I can only assume that this young man's parents failed him miserably in some way.

I cannot for the life of me fathom why you would go to a talk with Stephen Fry and spend your time yawning and looking as generally unimpressed as the young man in the tweed suit to the right of Mr Fry on his close up. Something about his indifference screams "self-entitled little shit", the likes of whom are only impressed by ardent contrarians who spend their time constantly looking at things with a cynical and inhumanly logical gaze. I just can't imagine how someone can go to a talk like this and fail to appear in the least bit interested in what the person has to say. Are they forced to attend these talks? Because if not, he really shouldn't be there and give his place to someone who may have benefitted more from hearing what Mr Fry has to say.
