I'm German and my English hasn't been good for the most of time because there weren't much opportunities to practice. Than I've been ill for a very, very long time and I've been unable to do anything but watching and listening RU-vid etc. My English improved and now I'm able to listen and understand(!) Stephen Fry talking and right now I'm very happy about that!😎

Too true, but then he defends this thing that policy, advertising, and free flow of information is and has directly been impacted by this radical vocal minority. Which I find very odd, given that he *is and has been outspoken against political correctness, which is precisely what the social media mobs enforce and congregate in.

I've watched a few of these and I've just realised why I enjoy these shows so much: it's actually the chat show format which used to be on tv 50 odd years ago ( eg Parkinson in the UK and Cavett in the USA) where the host allows interesting people to speak without feeling the need to perform themself ( eg Kimmel/ Norton). It also helps that the guests come from a variety of professional backgrounds and are genuinely interesting and not mostly actors who are barely coherent without a script.

Being an effective chat show host requires a very special skill and absence of narcissism that enables them to encourage and allow the interesting guests to talk and take the conversation on unanticipated paths. I've not seen this fella before, but he seems to have that skill. Mind you, once Stephen starts talking it can be difficult to stop him. Not that I'm complaining. I could listen to him all day. Hosts like Graham Norton, who I find entertaining, for the most part don't have intelligent guests. They have 'celebrities' whose sole purpose is to promote their latest 'whatever'. There's no point encouraging, allowing or expecting any unanticipated intelligent or even informative discussion from them.
@donmongoose

Stephen Fry has long been one of my favourite people but I want to make two other observations. First, it is great to see an interviewer who asks quick but interesting questions and then keeps quiet to let people answer. Secondly, as an Englishman it is both amazing and shaming to me to see a foreign TV show where people speak such excellent English. You would search for a long time to find anyone in England with such a grasp of other languages.
@Parawingdelta2
@Parawingdelta2 2 года назад
I live in Australia (originally from UK) and reasonably well travelled. Not as much as some but just enough to hear those who's first language is something other than English actually speak English far better than a lot of English people. It's a national embarrassment where not only are the various dialects not in keeping with English at an international standard, but the degree of 'lazy' speech that arbitrarily removes letters and fuses two or three word to make one!

What I wonder on this subject is if MR. Fry would have such a profound insight on the human nature without experiencing the darkest side of life. I guess he would have, having lived so many lifes through reading, but still. But the thing I admire the most is his dominion of the word, to the extent that he can express what he feels in a way that we can understand him and incorporate those experiences to our life. I think he's a little off on that description, or at least a little one-dimensional. I take his point that social media is predominantly pointless ramblings with little function, so in that sense he's certainly correct, but it misses the point that most people get their news and political opinions directly through social media channels, which makes it an extremely influential arena with wide ranging impacts in the real world. If a scientist is banned from social media for disagreeing with establishment ideas (which is an act that is the specific purview of a scientist), if a lie is perpetuated by spread on Facebook, or an ugly political truth hidden by censorship on Twitter, those are hugely impactful acts which can radically shape a society by controlling the flow of information.

His description of learning to use one's wits to avoid being beaten up really resonates with me. I grew up a fat, nerdy, non-Mormon in Salt Lake City, Utah. In other words, I was Bully Bait. Eventually, through a love of reading, film and...most of all...music, I developed developed a relationship with language that enabled a Cyrano-like defense. Bullies are far less likely to target you, if you can make them laugh...even at your own expense. I also loved his observation about how it's only right that young people should want to change the world to suit _their_ wishes since _they_ are the people who will have to _live_ in it after we're gone. When he puts it like that, I think of somebody who is to inherit a house. Why shouldn't they at least start _talking about_ what they intend to do with, making plans for the future. It has been said that, "Tradition is peer pressure from dead people." Once we _move out,_ it's _their_ house to do with as _they_ see fit. P.S. In junior high school, my dad taught me to tie a Double Windsor (AKA: Full Windsor), and it has been my "go to" ever since.

So wise Stephen Fry as per usual, I could listen to this man all day and night. "social media is a lavatory wall" spot on, Social media does not represent society as a whole, One of the major problems with social media is those who use it seem to think it is representational of everything they think do and say. I left social media and it improved my life so much
@lapelcelery42

He's right in the sense of it as being largely uninformed or partisan nonsense, but it misses the huge impact on society of everyone getting their news through social media channels, which control the flow of the information people are permitted to see, hear, and share.

Here in the US we had the very best Dick Cavett and plus British David Frost and others as versatile, intelligent and witty interviewers. Jack Parr the original Tonight Show host was brilliant (as a young child snuck into the den to watch late at night) Mike Douglas's 21 year run plus Merv Griffin 8 years or so all were excellent shows/ intelligent and compelling interviewers.Then came the true dumbing down of America salacious interview shows none of which were and are intelligent and stimulating enough for me to watch.

It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. I was (like so many ppl) picked on at school, too. I remember being so tired of being called "stupid" that I came home and began reading all the encyclopædiæ one day. Then I met people who spoke different languages, so got paranoid and began learning languages too. 34 years later, I'm an English teacher, writer, polyglot, and a source of ridiculous info, such as biology of Tasmanian devils, Medieval medical practices and how to make taffy😖 I think this is why Stephen Fry is my hero. Another person dedicated to language and knowledge❤

Amen, and amen. I was picked upon but after ignoring threats I punched the lights out of my aggressor, and no trouble after that. Learning is amazing, and when I left school I had read all the library books in the school, and the village library, and still eclectic in reading, which is the greatest piece of exercise anyone can do, but few actually do, and in Stephen Fry I notice a fellow student in the way he speaks, whilst being down to earth, the practical, and not like some of the fine speakers that are dished up to us in parliament

Aside from the being made fun of at school (he never said this way or that), you sound a lot like my father, who claims he can't learn languages and then reads news in Latvian to me and expects me to understand. :D He can also give out info on all sorts of subjects. You'd think, from the surface, that he's all about natural sciences; and then he goes and tells you all about a 19th century architect you'd never heard of before, and you find out he's seen a number of his creations in out-of-way places already. Stephen Fry is such a wonderful raconteur. I just wonder whether, as someone who suffers from Bipolar Disorder, he was a little manic here, barely pausing for breath. He’s always full of great stories and is so entertaining. He’s also been so candid about his mental illness. He’s skipping so quickly from idea to idea, he’s describing exactly the hyper state that he dreaded because he knew it would be followed by a depressive low. I admire his honesty and courage in opening up about this ‘vulnerability’ even more than his god-given wit.

Thank you Skavlan. An excellent interview. “Cancel Culture” is a central tenet of Woke. This is undeniable. And this is a subject close to my heart. It is because I have had a job thrust upon me. Namely, adjudicating as to who can and who cannot speak before a Society at a British Russell Group University. My remit is not to invite anybody who might “upset” or “trigger” not the majority, but any of our student body. Now, this has made me reflect on who, historically, I would have to not invite, uninvite or ban from campus. Plato and Aristotle. They would not be invited on the basis that they thought that the state should censor music. Aristotle also endorsed the institution of slavery and thought that it was “natural.” He is definitely off the list. Rudyard Kipling: Students at the University of Manchester recently painted over a Kipling poem on the basis that he was “imperialist and anti-Indian.” Imperialist he may have been, but Kipling was born in India. How can he be an Indian anti-Indian? Truly an inverted form of racism if ever there was one. Banned from campus. Leonardo Da Vinci: Good God no! In the official records of the time, Leonardo in his twenties is mentioned twice: once as having completed his training, and once as having been accused with other young artists of making improper advances to a male model. He was acquitted at trial, but, as we know, an accusation is all you need for the Woke culture to condemn you. Banned from campus. Mahatma Gandhi: In Manchester they are erecting a statue to the great man outside the Cathedral. However, this statute was condemned by many students at the University of Manchester on the basis that it, the statute, was ‘racist.’ ‘Racist’ because of some comments that Gandhi made about native black stretcher bearers during the Boer War. Not invited. George Orwell: He made remarks mocking vegetarians at the end of ‘Road to Wigan Pier.’ His views on freedom of speech would cause deep offence to those who believed in ‘safe spaces.’ Taken off the invitation list. Martin Luther King Jr.: During his ‘I have a Dream’ speech in August 1963 he made several references to the word “n*gr*”. Now of course, the speech itself is inherently anti-racist. Indeed it is probably one of the most anti-racist speeches in history. However, to your easily-triggered person the context is irrelevant. All that matters is use of some of the naughty ‘trigger’ words. As a consequence he would be uninvited. John Stuart Mill: Unquestionably “Mr. Woke” of the Victorian era. A pro-feminist; anti-slavery, pro-freedom campaigner before his time. However, he would have to be un-invited. Firstly, because he favoured the death penalty and secondly because, although he was vehemently anti-racist, like Dr. King, he used certain words in his vocabulary that would make the hypersensitive and neurotic go into a feint and then, possibly, into a permanent decline. As a consequence, he would not be invited to speak. Last, but not least, Karl Marx. Because of derogatory remarks that he made about the Slavic people he would not even make it to the invitations list. In fact, he would be banned from campus. The trouble is, all that I am left with to invite, or permit to be invited, are the anodyne and dull. Those who have nothing interesting nor new to say. In fact, those speaking pretty much match the mindset of modern students and modern faculty. It is just the bland leading the bland.

I really love Stephen but I think he is underestimating the strength of social media on the average persons life. If social media was just understood as the lavatory wall that would be fine, but we have corporations who pander to it, political biases of the platforms themselves, we even had a president of the united states use it as one of his primary communication platforms. And he communicates this idea of openness which is all good, I am a centre left liberal, I believe in liberal openness and progress. But openness can also lead to regress, and I think it should be said that people who are worried at some of the social changes being influenced into our culture shouldn't simply be disregarded because they are not open or conservative. We should be open to refined and quality new ideas, not every idea.

The way that Stephen Fry does not believe cancel culture exists as the media/tabloids portray it. What on earth are you talking about with how all these people will not be allowed somehow in conversations, it may be how the internet works but generally in real life, that’s not what happens. I hardly see weeping, screeching “triggered” people in real life unless they were seriously in need of medical assistance. People just speak in hypotheticals not based in reality and somehow it’s seen as intellectual because you use a bunch of jargon that conveys nothing but pretentiousness. Lol.
@tarepandakuma

And the fact that there’s duality amongst all these historical figure just shows that: they were imperfect people. I don’t think that wokeness has cancelled all of these dust particles because they are not going to ever be taken out of history books, their impacts, legacies, censored, being erased, etc. In fact, I fear that sensitive people who can’t holistically see that history is messy, violent, and all around “not safe” for children will be the death of their legacy. People calling for the revision of history books and the education system itself because they absolutely refuse to face the bloody, messy side of history and want to sanitize it further for the younger generations. People can have whatever reaction they want and choose to not engage with things they disagree. I don’t agree that people should be pushed to erase things entirely, for example, Gandhi’s racist remarks and whatnot. People throughout history are flawed, but I don’t think we should be seeing them as these pure beings who did nothing wrong. I can admit that Gandhi did powerful, impactful things, but I’m not gonna say that shit that he’s done with young women or the slurs he said weren’t a part of him, and that I don’t think that it was wrong. Doing so would be erasure.

@@tarepandakuma Sadly, "cancel culture" does exist and examples of it appear by the day. Mr. Fry might be in denial, but the reality in before him. Marks & Spencers have just renamed "Midgit Gems" (a small harmless sweet) because it "triggered" a lecturer in 'Disability Studies' at Liverpool Hope University who believed that the term might offend "little people." English students at Aberdeen University now have a "trigger warning" on copies on the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel 'Kidnapped' stated "WARNING: The book contains scenes of abduction." These are but small examples and yes, they are reported in the media, but they illustrate exactly what sort of madness that is taking over. To deny this is simply to plunge your head into the sand.

Steven is so intelligent and probably the most eloquent speaker in today's society. As it seems, not all liberal thinking people are woke - very refreshing and open discussion sadly missing in most circles.

I think his point wasn't that liberal thinkers aren't woke, but that woke is a tabloid term that is used to discredit these new ideas. He talks about how woke people expressing these ideas aren't the way media portrays them.

@@whataheapofpish Yes I am broadcasting on all wavelengths but people willfully ignore my message, they do not care to change....Still, you misread my comment. He changes the world, sure, but to whose benefit, UK, the media moguls that employ him and the bankers of the city of London? Because they are the pinnacle of justice, law, good will and morality?Is Stephen Fry a paragon of morality because, he knows stuff by reading them, as opposed to the rest of us? I guess he might be "their" hero , but we need to be clear whose hero he is, because apparently every single organism nowadays is a hero... Men like Hitler changed the world too, he was someone's hero as well then ..He speaks of banishing the Christian God who sacrificed himself to make our lives better , then mocks sacrifice (i.e heroism) and yet does not banish himself as the all-knowing morality speaking God he turned himself into, with his followers, so now he presents himself as a hero for broadcasting his (or others?) opinion in his homecountry, as part of his job as a broadcaster, so basically he makes a sacrifice like the one he was mocking earlier?Why not broadcast also the opinions of those he fights against? A conflicted character like all of us , but most do not go that far out of their way to simply be a know-it-all and advertise themselves through their "intellectuallism", having little actual hard work or manual work , servicing other people than himself to back up such a behavior... Heros do not need to shine on videos and on TV (only as heros of movies i.e. actors), they shine outside of it. Though I admit that people on the spotlight do get targeted by their own gossip machines.... Personally, I changed some small part of the world by participating in international infrastructure projects , some for poor people, and it is a good enough channel, we literally build bridges as engineers... Too many people talk on shows and on the internet,and many of them are rich caring to change the world for their own benefit only... I am sure that a brilliant man can use his intellect more efficiently than with a few videos on youtube if he wants to..Heroism is many things but "that" does not really cut the definition so much..If it does, then all 7 billions of us are heros, a reality show celebrity is as much of a hero as he is....Just stating the obvious, in regards to your statement (not about him so much), people throw terms online words like heroism with little idea. You can use more suitable characterizations for him, like "influencer" or "intellectual" or "media person" or "actor" or simply "my/our hero", which is utterly acceptable, because to others (possibly including me), he consciously caused calculated damage (I cannot prove it of course), so in that case he might be even a villain... There are actual heros out there risking their lives for the rest of us, it does not do them much justice, but I guess he risks his life as well going against religions like Islam for example, though he does have the back of the entire western hemisphere and their war-machine that bombs their countries, so I am not sure who is at a great disadvantage and who more heroic... By the way, when I tried to use a bigger channel to change more ,the safety of my own personal environment was compromised, people got hurt, because I apparently do not serve the same interest that he does...Others ended up with a bullet in their head in the past as you well know. You are kidding yourself if you think that men like Stephen Fry are able or willing to actually go against the "bad" guys, unless you become the "bad" guy yourself..And I am pretty sure he would agree with the last part I wrote....In the end we all choose sides, so he is a hero of his side....My comment was simple, his side to me represents little heroism....

Seriously!? I just sat through another engaging and thought provoking show, only to learn at the end that this is finishing? (I hope I misunderstood what Stephen said.) It's so rare to find a show of this calibre: where guests are shown genuine respect and given the space and time to explore and share. So rare for a host to guide their guests to the starting blocks and then sit back - without their own ego demanding attention - and enjoy the journey and revelations, along with the viewers/audience. Thank you!
