Loved him in Boardwalk Empire. My first exposure with him as Al Capone. Which he fucking nailed to the wall absolutely every scene. Then I just saw him again (similar accent, totally different character) as a computer (job title) in Greyhound with Tom Hanks. I had no idea this fella was British and he is rapidly becoming one of my favorite actors.

I watched a video with him recently where he talked about that, apparently it was hugely cathartic for him doing ‘that’ scene. But he apologised for it immensely to the guy who played that character after (forgot his name).

It's implied that Combo is also mixed race. That's why he's called Combo. The white nationalism is based on self hatred.

I saw Stephen Graham on TV as Al Capone in 'Boardwalk Empire' in about 2010. I recognised him but just assumed he'd been in something else American I'd watched. Years later I re-watched 'This Is England' on TV and then I remembered where I'd seen him - as Combo in that film. I thought he was a Yank, so his Al Capone accent must've been very good.

There's a little Geordie lad Billy, he's 11 years old. He's moving to London because his dad's got a job there, so he's starting a new school. His dad says "Because you're a Geordie, some of these London lot will think you're not very clever.. but we know you are, go and show them!"... So he heads off to school, into History class, and they're talking about the Second World War... the teacher asks "What is propaganda?"... 🤔 Billy's hand shoots up straight away... 👋 teacher's surprised and goes with it... "Go on Geordie Billy, tell us what propaganda is"... bursting with confidence and pride he says... * wait for it * ... ... ... ... "It's when ya have a reeely good look at somefin mon .... ya tak a proper gander!" 😁

American here. I can tell where a person is from, almost to the very State they are from, (if raised there and lived there most of their lives) with about 75 percent accuracy. The far Western states and the Plain States are the hardest to guess accurately. The Southern States are easiest as I live in North Florida. I could never get the different British accents. They all sound lovely to me ❤.

The Jamaican accent is actually highly influenced by the Scottish accent, similarly to how the deep south of the US is related to an older English accent. Hot humid air tends to slow speech patterns based on how sounds play to the ear. So the Scottish accent heavily morphed into the Jamaican one, with obvious African admixture as well. Not surprised a botched Geordie accent has vagaries of Jamaican. We are a lot more connected than we admit, and even the telling of history that tries to connect us has a way of erasing just the prevalence of those old connections.

I’m from Wisconsin. I never thought I had an accent. I always thought British people speak with an accent. Or people from Boston or Brooklyn. But since they are the original English speakers, I guess they speak proper English and we’re the ones with the Accent. We also have a Southern accent that is distinct from the Northern. I really enjoy the Scouse Accent that the Beatles had. I also had a friend who’s father worked in Brooklyn as a Cop. And he had the best Brooklyn accent ever. It was strong like the Boston Accent. I could listen to him talk all day. I wished I had that accent but I couldn’t even copy it, it was so distinct and strong. I like accents because when I talk it just sounds so plain. Accents are more interesting sounding.
@7timsch

We all have accents, my man. I'm from Cincinnati. We both probably have the bland, vanilla Midwest American accent. Though the farther north you go in Wisconsin, you run the risk of a Minnesota/Canadian accent. Similar here, just a little south and the southern accents start to pop up. Just the same, if we went to Boston or New York, a local there would probably immediately pick us out as being from Indiana or something with our "no accent" accents. Agree that other accents are pure magic!

I don’t think doing any accent should be a cause of offence It’s a celebration of the nuances and differences in the spoken English that we all understand. Doing a good Nigerian or Jamaican accent means that you’ve listened and enjoyed hearing how someone else talks.
