Honestly both possibilities regarding life are pretty terrifying. Either were completely alone in the vast universe and when we eventually go extinct that's it, the universe sits quiet and empty for eternity. Or were just one of BILLOONS of races in the universe and any one of them could be watching

Even if they recieve the transmission. That doesn't mean they can travel over here. Also considering the ampunt of light years we have between solar systems, 70 years should not be a lot. We would need to wait a long time for the transmission to be received and a long time for them to send one back. Spending hundreds of years traveling between solar systems mean exploring the universe is almost impossible unless we find a way to "jump" between space in a way that's not time consuming.

I find it fascinating that the Europeans are afraid that aliens will destroy them. But they don't think about Europeans destroying each other and everything else that is living.

I agree with Dr. Hawking that it was an extremely bad idea to send our most sensitive information about our planet, our humanization and our intelligence level out into space for any extraterrestrials to discover. Carl Sagan pushed the idea of the golden records attached to the voyager spacecraft. It's remarkable Carl Sagan didn't understand the inadvertent negative consideration of signaling to extraterrestrials and the consequences. As Dr. Hawking famously said, if you're alone in a forest why call out?

Of what sort? It's not paranoiac. it's realistic. I never considered Hawking's point of view before but it's level-headed. Hawking's considers more valid possibilities whereas this guy obnoxiously implies that one is pessimistically paranoid for considering a fuller perspective. Well, we can see which of the two is a better thinker.

I am pretty sure that any advanced civilization out there , not way too far from us , has known about Earth and its life forms for millions of years. I mean even we can look at starts and get a good idea about which have the proper conditions for life to evolve , without going there or getting messages from there. So if we send out messages or not is irrelevant , something far more advanced than us doesnt need our messages to realize that we are here ... wondering if we're alone or not.

I've been trying to come to some sort of conclusion since the mid 1970's on the question of alien life, specifically, whether or not they are here. I was in one camp for a period of time then the other. I finally came to the conclusion than Professor Hawking was likely correct. I believe it's highly probable that the Milky Way galaxy is inhabited by other sentient beings. This is, or was, the information which finally formed my conviction to the opinion that we are in trouble: Allies of Humanity briefings. Audiobooks. Book 1 & Book 2. Listen in their entirety. It makes total sense. It could be wrong but, too much of it makes sense as to current geopolitical events which are happening now.

I'm afraid Stephen Hawking was right about this. For as long as mankind has been around, we humans have almost always conquered the weaker inhabitants of a land that we wanted to explore. The stronger civilizations almost always killed off a lot of the weaker civilization's inhabitants and took away their lands and their resources such as gold, silver, farmland, etc. We even at times would enslave a lot of the weaker civilization's inhabitants as well. Look at what the Americans and British did to the native Americans. Look at what the Spanish did to the Incas and Aztecs in the 1500s and after that. If space aliens were interested in exploring our world and meeting our inhabitant, I don't think they would have our well-being as any one of their top priorities. I think they would do to us what we did to those weaker civilizations' inhabitants. In other words, we would be mostly killed off. A lot of us would become the space aliens' slaves. All our precious metals and possible sources of energy that can easily be mined would be gone. I think that this is what would happen, because I think anyone who has a brain and a heartbeat would have a tendency to act just like us. Also if they are able to get to us while we are not yet able to get to them, then I would definitely have to say that their civilization is way more sophisticated than us. Usually a more sophisticated civilization will win a war against a less sophisticated one.

Here's my take. It's biased by previous personal experience and knowledge. The first contact is probably going to be a noise complaint. Which, scientists might not interpret. They gave us the technology to stop making so much pollution. But, we end up using that technology to secure technology, until it creates a technology only focused on protecting itself. That's why we don't see millions of "civilizations" randomly blasting noise like American sci-media, had us assume everyone would do... (If you approach the situation without bias... You'd see things more clearly... Or rather, you'd see that which is claimed to be clear, is actually murky. Watch the news raw footage, without commentary or subtitles... That's how fast your judgement can be subverted... Remain skeptical until the truth reveals itself. ) First contract is the real big deal moment. On Earth, social justice struggles. A civilization can't launch a ship to Earth without checking if there's a world war at the moment. The moon could be the next great American colonization effort... It could be the final broken promise. That's why it has to be a global effort. We can't expand space endeavors without first ensuing we have a home. (The companies Elon Musk coordinates... They're spinning plates. Elon seems to be willing to throw the game for his team if it means he gets a highlight play. It's possible between his marketing companies and production companies, he can actually profit directly from bad press. It seems business would eventually come to that conclusion. Insurance companies have close ties with financing for obvious reasons. Landing on Earth might expose you to legal liability. Elon could sue them for damaging part of Starlink. Some cop might impound their space ship and force them onto the street. Then what? Loitering charges? Get a job? How? They'd have to break laws to get any of this done in time to survive. Unless, they break the laws especially for them... Which is not real justice... That applies to immigrants. ) And this is why free speech should be allowed. We can actually think without fear of retaliation. We can get ideas that aren't polluted with anxiety and paranoia. I believe Mr Hawking suffered most of his life. He fought back as hard as he could. It won't happen again. It can't. - that's my version of "first contact" as a practical concern for humanity. Trevor Noah was still right.
