His SOMA pseudonym might be a partial play on Aldous Huxley’s infamous, fictitious sorrow-obliteration drug, but Stephen O’Malley doesn’t deal in happiness.

The Osiris of drone metal has been involved with several of the genre’s key bands, including Sunn O))), Burning Witch, Khanate and KTL, and has also played an important part in linking the doom-sphere with the art world. His long list of collaborators stretches from Boris, Merzbow, Jim O’Rourke, Keiji Haino and Oren Ambarchi to French theatre specialist Gisèle Vienne, American sculptor Banks Violette, Italian performance artist Nico Vascellari and Belgian filmmaker Alexis Destoop.
Following his involvement with the Southern Lord and Ajna Offensive labels, in 2011 O’Malley became the curating force behind Ideologic Organ, which also serves as a nom de plume for his art direction and design activities.
In his 2013 Red Bull Music Academy lecture, this drone legend discussed 20-minute songs, tube amps and Terry Riley.

Everyone commenting saying he didn't know who Greg was before the interview: He was fucking leading the interview so that Stephen would explain to the audience, most of whom are not the kind of people who typically listen to Sunn, who Greg is and what his main musical project is. It's like yall have never been to a fucking seminar with a guest speaker before.

@Allen-rv5dd
@Allen-rv5dd 8 лет назад
+Jacob Frisenda NOPE. You know nothing about music criticism or even the basic idea of how an interview works. And with a very genre-spanning artist like this (Keiji Heino reference!) you MUST be able to have a knowledge of the artist, influences involved, and the ideas that they want to expound upon while they continue to create art in a variety of mediums. You are saying this: "Hey, um, so your name is Paul, right? You were in Wings? Cool! Man, I like your stuff. Do you play guitar, or more bass-like stuff? Those guys are like OLD! Have you heard of the Beatles? You should check them out!"
@stefankienzle1587
@stefankienzle1587 8 лет назад
Actually, familiarizing your audience with your interviewee's work is pretty par for the course especially when the audience may not be familiar with the interviewee. This happens a lot at seminars.So, that Paul McCartney analogy is utter nonsense.

okay guy I like to think that such extreme musicians as Sunn O))) use music to express feelings which aren't necessarily moral or are maybe frowned upon. For example, pure anger. Because of civilisation, people became generally a lot more docile, so such a primal emotion like anger just has no place here, yet it has to be expressed.
@Nevatis_
@Nevatis_ 7 лет назад
It's because (in my opinion at least) extreme musicians have an inherent understanding that they're not some superstar and they probably never will be, they make art for art's sake and generally don't have a complex about it

This has got to be one of the best interviews I've seen of a musician/artist in general. Stephen O'Malley is such an intelligent man, and there's so many things I liked in the interview (especially the things he said) that I can't really specify all in one comment, but the audience astounded me the most though. So much diversity, the African-American guy was a really cool individual that you wouldn't expect to see at a Sunn O))) Lecture. I love Sunn O))), Stephen O'Malley and all his works, even his collaborations and it made me feel good to see the diversity as a half black person. I wish there were more people I could share my interest with. Though that one guy in the audience was kind of annoying, he wouldn't let Stephen finish a sentence, hardly. Great interview/lecture. Kind of ironic how lengthy it was but I still managed to finish it though. The music, however, is different for me than an interview though.

To everyone who thinks the interviewer is dumb for asking questions, that’s kind of his job. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that when he acts like he doesn’t know someone or something, he’s doing it for the audience with the expectation that they don’t know who or what they’re talking about. You can’t say Greg and expect all of the regular ass people in the audience to know who he was talking about. That’s what an interviewer does. Extracts information in a cohesive manner and delves deeper into the subjects. And I think you guys are giving him to much shit. He obviously knows a little about the subject or at least did research for the interview. He references multiple interviews. So I’d say you’re giving him the short end of the stick.
@Abyssaeon

Varg is actually very smart and articulate and very knowledgable about world politics. It's mostly just the cultural marxist agenda backed by billionaires that we're conditioned by that make us feel we have to "not tolerate" that "outlook" - i.e. logic, reason, national and individual sovereignty, and wanting to be left the fuck alone to keep ones own rights.

He's surprisingly shy for someone who does live performances
@angelurbina8158
@angelurbina8158 6 лет назад
That's why he wears a tunic. Most shy people that perform to live audiences tend to be eccentric and pull off some gimmicks to cope with their shyness and social anxiety.

Most creatives are introverts. Which does not equal shyness.

My main issues: Who the fuck drinks red bull and listens to Sunn O)))? The interviewer clearly has no interest, makes so many mistakes and has done minimal research.

Check out Jakob. New Zealand postrock/ambient group that has definite metal influences. The guitarist used to be a metal player. They have their own sound.

I don't get why people laugh at Sunn O))). I guess some people aren't smart enough to understand that kind of music.

eh people are different, I definitely wouldn't cal sun smart music, it's just noise, calculating infinity thats smart music, I love Sunn O))) but it's honestly noise

I wouldn't say it has anything to do with being smart really. More like having patience and keeping an open mind rather than judging unfamiliar experiences too quickly.

Maximum Volume = Maximum Results. Also, there are detailed subtleties that add depth and volume to their entrancing sound. Try listening with either high-quality headphones (better) or with a large stereo with a sub (best) at high volume and just relax and let your mind wander and just give in to the sound, in a meditative way. It's dark, it's not light or happy, it's some of the heaviest music in the world. It's art in sound. Remember they play the same songs, so nothing is random or unplanned.

+djdaniels00 well i listen with Audio‑Technica ATH M50X headphones so there pretty good. . so far i don't really mind listening to it but i cant tell weather to classify it as strictly music or a mix of dark meditation with musical influences.... i just dont know what to think of it. is it intended to be listened to as music or meditation?
@djdaniels00
@djdaniels00 9 лет назад
+liminalexpression I would expect the interpretation or classification of it being music, strictly meditative noise, or both is for the listener to decide. Sunn O))) has a pretty big range of sounds in their various albums/songs. If you want a good dark, powerful meditative track (in my opinion) listen to Agartha on Monoliths and Dimensions. Hunting and Gathering on that same album is more musical with a discernable rhythm. My Wall on White 1 is a dark poem being spoken over a dark ambient soundscape, and the words of the poem go along with the sounds in the background. On Sunn O)))'s website with southern lord you can stream all of their songs for free if you go to store, then digital, then click on an album to listen to. It's better than RU-vid for listening to any Sunn O))) track. Read the background of Domkirke then listen to the first track, it's crazy.

AdrianVino get a heavier string gauge. I used .12s for C and D standard. A# would prob need .13s or so
