The look of delight on Stephen Sondheim's face when Jason Alexander, Scott Bakula, and Bernadette Peters start to sing says everything. We should all be so lucky to love what we do that much.
I have never understood anyone who says they don’t like musicals. Sondheim could have written about anything and it would have been interesting. He will be profoundly missed. RIP.
I know Bernadette Peters is an undisputed broadway legend but she should be so much more. She is an indelible actress and one of the few people who have a timeless beauty and elegance. I hope she is forever remembered along with Sondheim.
Several years ago, I saw him perform the lead in Shenandoah at Ford’s Theater in Washington DC (where Lincoln was shot). Shenandoah is about a man who is a pacifist living during the Civil War. One of his sons gets taken prisoner. Scott did a great job as the father. It’s a musical. It was an appropriate play for the theater. We were there for my son’s 8th grade class trip to DC. The music director for the show was Steven Landau, which also happens to be my son’s name. 😊
Additionally, I seem to recall that when _Quantum Leap_ had an episode about _Man of la Mancha_ , Scott may have sung then as well. Definitely remember John Cullum stepping in for the climax of the episode.
Sweeney Todd was the first Broadway show that I ever saw--and I was in awe from beginning to end. Mr. Sondheim, what you have given to all of us is immeasurable and incomparable. And to watch Bernadette Peters simply stand stock still and sing "Not a Day Goes By" is translucent. You can literally see right through her as she sings. The pairing of Sondheim and Peters was, and still is, pure magic. RIP, my captain.
I first became aware of stephens music as a 13 year old when I bought a dvd of Sweeney Todd at a flea market for 2 dollars thinking it would be a “cool edgy horror movie”. I’ve never been so captivated by a score and I’ve seen so much of his work since then. He never ceases to amaze me. I’ve cried so much these past days. Thank you for everything❤️
She always steals the show more so then the others in this cause well let's be honest here she's just a super good gal who knows how to sing really well with her very talented vocal range
I ran home from school every day and put the brand new cast album of WEST SIDE STORY on the turntable. My parents took me to see the show-my first Broadway musical. I was six.
Ahh Mr. Sondheim, I cannot imagine my life without your compositions, your lyrics, your stories and your brilliant insights on the tragic/comedic human condition for the past 50 years. THANK YOU MAESTRO!
Every time I see Sondheim beaming while someone sings his music well I get a bigger crush on him. Yeah, yeah, I'm not his type but a girl can dream. I'll settle for having him on my dream dinner party list. Thanks for this video!
I love him. Kind of a crush. His music is some of the best ever written for the theatre, and when he leans forward, puts his chin in his palm, and smiles, I melt.
I just found this video and your comment, and I feel the same way about him! And I thought he was much better looking as an older man than as a youngster. Straight, gay, it doesn't matter; love for him, I think, comes from the emotions his music evokes.
An American treasure who's radicalized theater and captured our time so exquisitely in song and lyrics. A one-off who electrifies an audience...even with the most dulled of sensibities and jaded of outlooks. I adore his work, his artistic courage, his genius. When I sing or play his work it makes me better.
I am in the UK, and don't think Angela or Julie have lost their British accents,Julie was born in Walton on Thames,Surrey;Angela was born in St. Pancras, Central London.
Sondheim didn't go for singers first, he wanted actors who could sing. After all, it's musical theater. Sometimes he hit it out f the park -- with Bernadette Peters, for instance. She's the great interpreter of Stephen Sondheim's music.
@@laughinglots I (respectfully) disagree. It's true that the music is often incredibly complex. But all his songs are written from the perspective of the character singing them. That's the key to solving the musical problems. If you can't act, there's no point in trying to sing Sondheim.
@@capemaxi I listened to that album some with the other one ah that's the best of her songs right thier in those two albums also her performance in into the woods holy hell she knows how to sing she also let's out this most sinister sounding evil like cakle that is so humourous just blows me away how in 2020 I finally get around to listening to Bernadette peters and rock sugar ah it's so great that two of my favorite animaniacs character's voice actors are both musically inclined when not on the show of course
This is one of the best Kennedy Honors programs ever. The honoree a spectacular talent, the performers so perfectly chosen to deliver every ounce of emotion to powerful lyrics and unforgettable melodies (I have to admit I love the edge of melancholy in most of them). No one, NO ONE, writes music and lyrics like Stephen Sondheim.
He's from my hometown of St. Louis. A dear friend of mine heard saw him perform the lead in Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamboat. I believe Scott was in his late teens at the time.
Scott bacula & Jason Alexander, both sing soooooooo. Greatly. Who knew ????? But who played the role of seaurot, ooooppsy, I know, misspelled!!! Someone please respond to this. Thanks. 02 /13/20
Giving inspiration to every theater kid in America and beyond! Ahhh, I still remember how I felt the moment I was introduced to the music of Sondheim ❤️❤️
I love, love, love the artistry of this genius, a true contemporary Shakespeare. His music is stunning and riveting that melts the torn up soul. His lyrics makes us think of how much we all have in common. 👍👏🎭
Daisy. I should be so fortunate to have Stephen Sondheim look at me with a kind of reverence and awe as he did when Bernadette Peters and Angela Lansbury sang 🎶🎵the songs from his musicals!!
Such a * Sweet person I just see it n his eyes! so many ways he was * Original * Profound * & The 🌎Has lost a great light that now shines on n other galaxies * Will be greatly missed * RIP Mr. Stephen Sondheim
He is beyond brilliant. The word genius is so over used- but for him it still feels an understatement. Who needs therapy when you have Sondheim...? Love, love love, this man.
What can be said about Sondheim’s career and works that has not already been said.? Not everyone comprehends his style or songs upon first listening. However his incredible searing ironies and comedic rapier wit are also peppered with at least one stunningly beautiful and haunting ballad in each show that everyone gets upon first hearing. He challenges and intrigues and entertains beyond whistling tunes. And for that he has something no other American musical theatre composer really stuck to without compromise : The journey of the dark soul . It’s in all of his musicals to an alarming and uncomfortable level. And he made it work. Very strong stuff.
I belonged to a group that played Send in the Clowns in 81, 82 and 83. I've performed it many many times but when Angela Lansbury started to sing this I couldn't help it. The tears just came down.
Growing up in the 80s and 90s as a kid, when I see Scott Bakula, Bernadette Peters and Jason Alexander, it just makes me think of Dr. Beckett, Rita from Animaniacs and George Costanza. They are so amazing and I love hearing them sing and seeing them act. Wonderful and I love it.
Wow... Jason Alexander was insanely brilliant and I've had not clue this entire time! Shame on me because his acting is so precise and measured so well that he could count the beats of the laughter.
Sondheim’s music is just perfection. The lyrics are utterly exquisite and the music is like nothing on earth. Intelligent and witty, he used language like no-one has ever used it before and each song is designed to grab you right in the heart and never let go.
I did work on Stephens home. He was a great guy. A major pothead too. Lol. He would normally sit in his house puffin away while we worked. My boss was fascinated by it. Lol. 😁
Also,if there is anyone reading this who personally knows Bernadette, would you please give her a smooch on the cheek, care of Charles Perez? I would appreciate that. Oh and Rita Moreno, too, while you’re at it. ❤️
Genius and a beautiful man . Never ever will there be anyone like him . The most amazing songwriting and so technical . You know your good if you get to sing Sondheim
I love Sondheim. My first exposure was listening to a recording my parents had of the musical "Do I Hear a Waltz?", with who was to be my first crush in Cinderella, Stuart Damon as Prince Christopher. I love "Send In the Clowns" (makes me cry),"The Ladies that Lunch" and so many more , I am fortunate my parents are so musically inclined and who love Mr. Sondheim's work. To meet him and work with him must be a gift.
Thanks to Dan Rather for sharing this in today's e-mail from Steady. Truly brought a smile! The moment when Bernadette Peters hollered "Look at Mrs. Clinton! Doesn't she look lovely??"
I recently came across Dame Judy Dench perfoming Send in the Clowns at the BBC's anuall Music festival Proms. She's meticulous and outstanding. Enjoy ... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yvZex3Qf7QQ.html
@@donnyjackson8656 I thought that the late entrance change was a deliberate nod to her own career, as she highlighted the significance of her working with Sondhiem in her speech - him giving her her first part on Broadway, and her later getting her first leading role in the theatre in her 40s, after 20+ years of supporting roles in Hollywood. I didn't spot the other change/mistake, but to be fair I don't think she's ever performed the part, or done the song elsewhere.. (?) Perhaps she didn't get enough time to rehearse it, or perhaps nerves got the better of her - she did make a joke about her own voice at the start, and it's gotta be hard to perform for Sondhiem and that audience AND following those other performances, especially Bernadette Peters! It's a shame, but I think it's an understandable slip
Thank You God for This Gem♡♡☆♡Nothing is Gonna Harm You Not While I am Around Nothing is gonna harm you No Sir while iam Around♡I Love the Song so deeplyScott Bakula sings it beautifully
Bernadette Peters was the only singer at just about the same vocal level as Julie Andrews... as a musical comedy voice, tho’ Barbara Cook was wonderful too.
