On July 27th 1987 at the Shubert Theatre on Broadway, the theater community gathered to say goodbye to the great Michael Bennett. At this service, introduced by Bennett's brother, Stephen Sondheim sang a very emotional version of "Move On" from SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE

Wow. You can really hear how emotional Stephen is at the beginning of this. Whew. What a performance. And that last bit - I don't think you're human if you don't choke up when he sings the last few phrases. "Goodbye Michael".

Even if I hadn't watched this right after hearing about Sondheim's death (which already had me crying), I don't think I could have made it through to the end of this...you can feel that hesitation of not wanting to get to an ending, and especially *that* ending..."give us more to see" must have been torture to sing at that moment.

Just came here after hearing of Stephen’s death. He gave a universe of inspiration to this world! It would be wonderful if someone performed this at his own funeral, a beautiful passing of the torch!

I have never loved stephen sondheim more than i do now. This is something one rarely sees. Not just a compsor singing his own music, but the chance to really feel what Steve went through when having lost Michael Bennet who must've meant alot to him. Man was gone to soon, but for sondheim to get up on that stage (and mind you, he's not a natural born performer himself) and wear his heart on his sleeve like that must've brought to tears to anyone watching, namely my self 🥺. The way he sang the last words, (his best set of lyrics to be honest and someone can argue with me all they want😏😂) you could hear his voice almost cracking into tears and having lost someone as well, its quite beautiful to see such a rare connection between the theatre maker and the theater viewer as well as giving a voice to those coping with death in their lives. This was heart-breakingly beautiful, and I think one of the bravest things anyone can do and I am on my feet with admiration for this guy. What a genius, what an artist, what a human. Thank you for your gifts Mr. Sondheim 😍😘.

I love the way Sondheim turns the pages himself (with some awkwardness) probably from his original score... Also the way the music stops and the melody makes some "aside" comments before continuing on the flow of the beautiful arpeggios. Excellent work, and so heartfelt too. Thanks Stephen, and Happy Birthday to you!

This is one of the few times I’ve seen Sondheim crie. He must have had a great esteem for Michael Bennett.

He cried all the time in public. It's a very endearing quality.

He said in his last book that he cried easily, even when watching Animal Planet. He seems to have been a really nice and talented human being.

It gives a look at what it might have been like for SS to present a song to his collaborators as they were building a musical. What a thrill for him when it was turned over to the great singers who brought it to life.

I have been reading all the meditations and memories since he passed and it seems there are many stories about him being moved to tears especially in the last half of his life. Also the extraordinary time he took to be responsive to people.

Parts of this song were stuck in my head today, had to listen to this. I’m just kinda laughing at how weird it sounds, cause he’s not really a singer but he did this for his friend and that’s nice.

To watch him singing, playing the piano, and also turning the pages himself, I cant explain, it's astonishing to me. That's the perfect image of Moving On.

The introduction is by theatrical attorney and now producer John Breglio, not Bennett's brother.

The date on this is incorrect. Michael Bennett died in 1987, and the memorial was on July 27, 1987, at the Schubert Theater.
