It's important to note that in September 1974 Stephen's father and his two brothers closest in age to him were killed in the crash of Eastern Air 212 and his mother moved Stephen and the kids to Downtown Charleston, from James Island. It's likely that this represents the last happy time he had in his youth, the last time his family was all there, and his mention of "I didn't have the greatest academic career after you" is very telling of how withdrawn he became following the tragedy and his move away from this happier place.
You're right ... I read that in the article in GQ explaining what happened to his family and the aftermath and the effect it had on him..... It had me crying....I think Stephen is a wonderful person....:)
Also makes it poignant that he asks if any of the old Stephen is in him now. I know for myself, it feels like after tragedy and huge life changes that the person you were is completely gone. It muse be normal to seek reassurance from people that it's still you.
I get the sentiment of that statement but Stephen did graduate from Northwestern University, which is a very prestigious school. But he did mention that he actually grieved the passing of his family while in college so I could only imagine the toll it took on him mentally and emotionally.
+Lord Burgendy I can't remember any of the names of my coworkers or bosses at half of my first several jobs, but I know all of my middle-school teachers' names by heart. Childhood memories stick with and shape you more than anything else in life, by far.
They get three months off because the children get summer vacation, dude. We didn't invent summer vacation to benefit the teachers. Don't know how that has anything to do with this.
Guys, guys! That is Mrs. Keeling was my third grade teacher! This is the exact same teacher I had! Oh my god, she was amazing! I mean I knew that Stephen and I both went to Stiles Point over thirty years apart, but this is just really cool to think we had the same teacher. I had Mrs. Keeling two years before she retired, and I feel honored to have had her, just because she is such a great woman and helped me through some trough points in my life as a young kid. Love you Mrs. Keeling! And you as well Stephen! You both are so awesome!
I can't explain how much I'm crying right now. I really can't. This was one of the most beautiful things I've seen in a long time. I love you so, so, so fucking much, Stephen.

I've always loved Stephen Colbert but this sent me over the top! Honoring his teacher and all teachers with the "Best School Day Ever" fund raising is just what our world needs. Way to go!!
Very cute and touching segment. I love the cartoon when he has hearts in his eyes. Wouldn't it be great if more famous people honored their favorite teachers? Because one outstanding teacher can actually change the course of a kid's life.
You can invite big stars and produce virals for youtube every week. Stephen goes his own way with this show. This is a great example for his style of Late Night. Love it.
This is one of the sweetest interactions I have ever seen! ALL Love and Respect for 👩🏫TEACHERS 👨🏫 out there!!! Thank you for sharing! 😊 ❤️🕊🕯💫🐾🌎🐾✨🕯🕊❤️
That is so cool for him to go back and visit his favorite teacher. Love it. I've always told my favorite teachers in the past that they left an impression on me. I had several favorite teachers, of course junior and senior high we had several classes, so more to choose from. I always try to have my kids let their teacher know what am impact they've made on them. Teachers do love to hear that. Even if they can reach one child a year, it really does make a difference.
We love you Stephen, you're the best. Most of your fans are young folks, we appreciate you more than other dumb hosts who ask dumb questions, fake laugh then play dumb games.
I don't know, Fallon at least seems honest in what his show is, and I like it for that. Plus they've got great writers, the best band, and Higgins is super quick. Corden on the other hand feels disingenuous to me. I think he's not being himself, playing the game. Just my 2 cents.
Letterman was the best and Stephen is a very worthy successor, I love how he's made the show his own. I'm getting very sensitive as I grow older so that means that this silly little clip made me cry a little. I don't know what I'm hiding, but clearly something is down there waiting to bubble up.
Takes courage to notice the underlying feelings and even more so to share them with others, esp a place like youtube. Good for you man..hope whatever it is brings you peace and healing. And don't mind Darkduck.. he probably has some stuff bubbling under the surface he hasn't gotten in touch with yet either
Teachers are amazing resources to our childhood and are awesome inspirational icons in our lives! Decreasing budget on education is the worst thing any country could do. This was so moving, she still remembered him and kept that tape after so many years.
I still go out and try and visit my elementary school when I can. I'm only 23 but it still means the world to those teachers who get underpaid and undervalued to see what they were able to do. My dream (post retirement) job will be to teach. It's such a great profession thank you to all of the teachers out there! You change lives even if only 1 or 2 old students come to visit.
Colbert just showed his emotional side and yet made it funny..what a man....and for him to consider her as his favorite teacher...she must have been a truly special induvidual
+Mahmoud El Arch do it. As a teacher for 16 years, we get burned out and feel like we have wasted our lives, but sometimes we run into the kids and they tell us how much we meant to them and its truly a wonderful feeling
That is such a beautiful story. Funny enough I met my favourite former teacher two weeks ago and we haven't seen each other in 10 years (she's left my old school ages ago sadly). She arranged to visit London for a week from abroad and we decided to meet up. It was such a lovely reunion plus it was my wish to see her again. We're still continuing to keep in touch too
Every "Teacher" in the world, should watch this and see how important your positive impact and encouragement, that can elivate your pupils/students for the rest of their lives. This why education is so important in our communities. 😃♥️😘😀😇♥️ And by the way; Who knew that Stephen was a little sweetheart. 😘❤️😍😀
The part that really amazed me was that they were still working on word problems avoid addition in fourth grade. Although my one memory from fourth grade was learning what this mysterious concept of "symmetry" was, so I guess it's not that outlandish. My favorite teacher was a guy named mr.whitten in fifth grade, who basically gave me the foundation to everything that I love today. Space, technology, and drawing. He was great.
+Edward Stew and in context, it meant not to be frugal with the amount of good words she can say about him as a student. The word is not just applied when dealing with money.
