I'm an opera singer trying to record my voice myself. I'm trying to find what the right input level on my audio interface (Steinberg UR12) is to be able to pick all the voice dynamics without going way overdrive. Right now I have to back up about 15 feet (that's the maximum distance I can go in my current set up) from the mic (Rode NT1-A) for the loudest phrases, but I'm still having overdrive peaks and using several compressors don't fix all of it.

Mid-Side microphone technique gives the best results for this. Usually a solo opera singer will stand to the side of the piano (from the pianists point of view) in that curve shape of the body of the piano. If you use a mid-side config pointing toward the front of the vocalist you can vary the distance and height of the set up to get your desired balance of voice vs piano keeping in mind that the distance does affect how much room vs source sound you will pick up. During post processing you can then vary the stereo width to your liking.

I’m a professional opera singer, tenor. I do recordings at home using 2 tracks. What microphone would be best for my kind of voice and music I sing? I now own a charter oak SA 538 but most people recommend me the Neumann TLM49 or 103 - others say different - most responds come from people who only do rap or pop music and never done any classical stuff. Hope you can help me a step closer to my goal. I’m using a UAD Apollo X4 - also was thinking for ambiance the capital chambers plug in - would that help?

Small diaphragm cardioid condenser at 3-4 feet away, plus an AB Omni pair from 7/8 feet above and 7/8 feet away from the singer. Angling the cardioid up can have more natural mids and "nose", is brighter but can require a pop filter. Angling slightly down at the singer can be more mellow and blend better with an ensemble. Experiment with the blend of Omni's and cardioid. The room sound is 50% of the recording so try to get in the best room you can.

What about getting a formally trained opera singer to sing pop music? Particularly, how to lessen the vibrato in a healthy way. Is that even doable? Would welcome thoughts and ideas on that subject.

Freddie Mercury from the band Queen is such a singer. He has an opera voice but uses it to sing pop. I'm not sure If that was your question, though
