Stereo Width Production Trick For Clarity and Space

NOTE: There is a part where I talk about needing to press the "Stereoize" button for the effect to work. I should have clarified that this button needs to be pressed if your source is in MONO. If you already have some stereo width to your sound, this button is not essential. I hope I didn't cause confusion that this button must be pressed before the plugin does anything, I was only referring to MONO sources (Which is what we used in this video, the Rhodes and vocal). What I was referring to is also a common thing I see where a plugin being tweaked in "bypass" mode but the person swears it is making a difference.
This simple stereo width trick really gives a lot of space and focus to the vocal and transforms the sound of the song from a classic recording sound to a modern soundscape. Sometimes when trying to make an element more clear (such as the vocals) it's good to look at things competing with that element as opposed to trying to boost the clarity in the vocal. As with all stereo techniques make sure the sound doesn't end up out of phase or degraded too much, this technique can often be a "less is more" thing.
You can hear the full song used in this tutorial here.

Mid=central signal. Side=L and R signal. Then you EQ! Not complicated to understand how it works. To understand when and why you need it, it's the basic purpose of mixing = making frequency room for instruments/sounds so they sound better. But sometimes you need frequencies that sadly step on each other. Mid side EQ is helpful for this.

Sometimes I use an Edison recorder on the master to record all the audio in FL studio but it kills my computer. Sometimes I use OBS screen recorder but recently I've bought am external Audio recorder (thanks to my Patrons) that I simply plug my microphone into and plug a headphone out from my interface. It records the audio into separate files and then I use OBS to capture my screen. It's never a perfect set up but it gives a good quality for the viewers

Stereoize does make mono signals "stereo"ized"... So if you have instrument with stereo signal in it in that case it's not often smart to use Stereoize function with imager I'm just saying. Many people use it in mastering wrongfully pushing the stereoize on and endup with mono incompatible masters. Some cases it might work tho if we careful with low fq's...

I have a question. There is a very good trick to make a guitar stereo by recording the same riff two times and panning the two tracks to left and right. But whats a good practice to archive the same result with vst sample libraries? For example, Strummed Acoustic library for Kontakt. If you make two independent channels of same vst and play same notes on them, they will sound exactly the same as there won't be natural randomness.

I don't know anything about sound engineering, I just started getting into it. But one thing that really stood out is whatever you did to your vocals in the first part of the video completely changed the entire vibe of the song. All that reverby, airy synthesized effect on the vocals shouldn't need to be done if you want to achieve what you want. Am I correct? I much prefer natural dynamic vocals, surely you can keep that and work around it. Sorry not sure if that makes sense, but I just didn't understand all that change to the vocals in the first place when you ended up steroizing the other tracks. I'd love to hear the "final" version on this YT video, but with the original vocals. Also, I'd love to hear the final final version you released. Great work man! I'm just starting to learn.

I feel like sometimes I can't get the guitar tracks to feel like they surround the vocals a bit or more of that vocals and guitar mixed along with each other better.

Your tutorial's are awesome. got any advice on which mix/master tools we can invest? I'm using the stockplugins in REAPER for a long time and I am really happy with it but I think it is time for an upgrade. I see there are amazing bundles @ the ozone website. Something you can recommend? Kind greetings from Belgium, keep doing what you are doing cuz it is great and helped so many people.

Well that's not all things actually you can do with your mono/stereo mix. There is a lot things you can do with mono by using specific types of chorus, fruity delay at 0.6-13ms, psp psp pseudostereo, room reverbs with stereo separation to only side/ phase inverters. On a wide stereo signal sometimes I do -100% to stereo and move phase on 2.1-4.8 ms (Fruity Stereo Enchancer) that gives a space to "some" other layer synths, but for shure I can say, more things you trying to do tricky, less result can be haha, when all mix together is bad ballanced between mid/side in total.
