Sterling Mk.4 / L2A3: the ultimate angry toob. Uzi: the ultimate angry box.
Mike owns a Sterling and Eric ‪@neutral_af‬ owns an Uzi. Both open bolt, both blocked at semi. What do they think of each other's gats? What if we throw a closed bolt Sterling Mk.6 into the mix? And for a final comparison, a CMMG rotary delayed blowback (but they call it radial delayed blowback) 9mm AR-15 PCC with KP-15 WWSD lower and a Walker Defense Research compensator to show what modern looks like?
Enjoy!

All British small arm IA drills when this was issued involved cocking the weapon first. The mag was only removed if the stoppage required it. The NDs usually associated with the weapon were people treating it as a closed bolt weapon and forgetting that if the working parts went forward, when there was a loaded mag the weapon would fire due to the fixed firing pin . I went through basic training twice, once in a teeth arm and once in a remf unit both times the difference was heavily emphasised and the mechanisms explained. People tended to be a bit cagey around the Sterling all the old STEN troupes lagged on as well. Never saw a ND with one and it was the common personal weapon in my second unit. I did see NDs with SLR, SA80, pistol.

Good point about jams on open bolt guns. I had a shooter that was new to open bolt guns. He remove the mag on my MP40 with a double feed jam. Before I could stop him. The jammed cartridge cleared with the mag removal, the bolt fell and fired the round in the chamber.

@wittsullivan8130
@wittsullivan8130 День назад
Before NFA trusts were accepted and the chief law enforcement officer form was required, it was REALLY hard or impossible to get an NFA item of any sort unless you know your sheriff or police chief. I remember the semi-auto Sterling and Uzi carbines with the stupid 16 inch barrels and the shorter display barrel which didn't have a chamber, just screwed on to the front of receiver. Then getting a Sterling or Uzi pistol were options, but hard to shoot without a stock, making a very cumbersome pistol out of a PCC. I'm sure someone out there is making a pistol brace so lucky owners of semi-auto Sterlings and Uzis can mount one of those and use the right length barrel. Btw, they sold the Uzi and Mini Uzi with 16" carbine barrels, which ruined the lines and concealability, and they sold stock less "pistols". Uzi also put out the Micro Uzi in semi-auto as the Uzi pistol. I remember someone selling one in the early 90's in 9mm that came bundled with the .45 ACP conversion kit for $800. If I knew then what I know now, I would have jumped on it.

The part were you found out the Sterling will eject with the safety on reminded me of when I found out the Yugo AKs will eject with the safety engaged. I read that on the internet somewhere after owning one for years and my first reactions was: "No, it won't." I went and grabbed an M70AB2 I had at the time and loaded a snap cap in there, put the safety on and tried to rack it, and the snap cap went flying across the room. I had to grab my Romanian AK and try it to fully believe that it was a Yugo only thing. Always cool to find little hidden features in old guns.
@BlokeontheRange
@BlokeontheRange 2 часа назад
Interesting about the Yugos. Type 1 AK's will also do that, the rest have a slightly longer dust cover which means you can check the chamber but it won't eject or take a round, and this is why the cover extends a little into the ejection opening, cos it wasn't on the first model.

We had two weeks of intense safety mindfvck about the Uzi in IDF (geriatric) reserve basic training, during which we yomped to the range once, and were allowed a grand total of three shots each in semi-auto. Our pediatric conscript instructors didn't bother with checking the targets, so I do not know where these shots went to this day. Of course, the Uzi was entirely phased out from IDF service less than three years later ca. 1990, to be advantageously replaced by the iconic sawn-off M16-A1 for non-combatants, artillerymen, tankers, girls, and suchlike. Lightly-built, teenage female conscripts could no longer whine about back pains from carrying their boomsticks on guard duty all day/ night, since the shortened, pencil-barrel M16 has about half of the former 9mm kludge's heft. with over 10 times the range and amazing accuracy to boot.

You don't try to center an aperture sight, just look through it as if it's not there. Your eye will center the sight without any conscious effort though I forget the scientific term for that ocular phenomenon. Just forget there's a rear sight, look through it and put the front post on the target for a perfect hit every time (assuming it's properly zeroed). Eric would freak out if he ever saw the enormous ghost rings we put on .45/70s in Alaska, yet when properly zeroed you can cover a 100 meter group with the palm of your hand.

@@BlokeontheRange Yeah, with that tendancy amongst XXth century french small arms, someone up the procurement chain must have considered troops shooting cessions stats needed every bit of help they could get. Yeah, the "à la hanche" was a big thing. Having shot Chappie's MAT 49, I'd say the rear sight is almost unusable aside from trying to squeeze off singles or doubles, you end up kinda just looking through the whole thing, metal and all, with the hole as sort of a vague reference, rather than looking through it in the normal sense, if you see what I mean.

Fired both in semi and full auto - both are good guns but my preference is for the Sterling (I'm biased - as a platoon radio operator it was my personal weapon).... I always just selected the sights for 200m whatever the actual range. We had a range day where a Company officers mate who ran a gun shop turned up with some "interesting" pieces of kit - as well as the Uzi I can remember a couple of Sten versions, a couple of AK's, a sniper version of the Galil (as well as the standard version) and an MP 40. Sadly, only the officers got to fire the PPS...... :( Good times.

I've shot a full-auto Uzi and Sterling. The Uzi is nice and controllable because it's so heavy and the rate is so slow. The Sterling is very smooth, probably the smoothest machine gun I've shot (including a number of MP5's) in large part because of the roller follower in the magazine. I also owned a semi closed-bolt Uzi for a number of years, but it doesn't really compare because mine had a big heavy hammer that's probably as bad as an open bolt. Do you have the SIG MPX over there? It's gas powered, but it's heavy. Heavier than the average AR-15.
@BlokeontheRange
@BlokeontheRange День назад
Yes, we can get MPX over here. I've not noticed any difference in smoothness with the Sterling when using a STEN mag, it's just a hideously well-balanced action in every sense: true API and it doesn't hit the end cap so I guess it counts as "constant recoil". The Uzi was smooth despite feeling/hearing the metal-on-metal clang, it didn't affect anything, but it was just odd to experience it.
@billstevens5277
@billstevens5277 20 часов назад
@@BlokeontheRange You probably wouldn't notice a difference in smoothness with a STENCH mag in semi. I never tried a Sterling like that, but it's very smooth in full-auto. So pedantic corrections when you are talking about the history of the various platforms around the 15 minute mark. The AR platform dates from about 1959-60 in 5.56, but not in 9mm and not with the CMMG delayed blowback. Most 9mm ARs are closed bolt, direct blowback and descended from the Colt SMG which came out to compete in US government contracts in the early 1980s. They actually recoil similarly to a 5.56 AR because direct blowback. They are also quite heavy because of the heavy bolt and buffer required for direct blowback. The recoil is still inline with the stock so they might outperform your closed bolt sterling, but not by much. The CMMG radial delayed blowback system is entirely modern. CMMG brought that out within the last 5ish years.

well, unlike you two hacks, I've used both in combat zones and the Sterling is far better IMO. It's less fvcking about in that there's less that can go wrong or break, the sights are *far* faster to acquire, and the Sterling is far easier to *handle* from the top of a Chally. That said, my "used both in combat zones" was less than a full mag with each. :) The idea of better is silly because, quite honestly, they are both effectively militarily irrelevant these days, and even less relevant for civilians.
