Saw Stan & Ollie yesterday, and it's fantastic. Touching, poignant and funny, and made with all the affection and respect the world's greatest comedy duo deserve. Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly are truly superb in their portrayals.

It's playing at a nearby theatre, and I want to see it this weekend. I am a true Laurel & Hardy geek. So glad that all these fine people decided to tell part of their story to new audiences.

The actors were absolutely astonishing! The whole production was just brilliant. How the Academy let them slip through the awards shows is shocking and a great disappointment. Stan and Ollie will be considered one of the best films of all time.

I was afraid to see this movie. To me, Stan and Ollie are more than Legends, they are my friends, and I dreaded that a Movie portraying those two men might do them total injustice. The movie proved to be a beautifully crafted work that moves and delights, and shines in presenting Stan and Ollie as they must have been, true friends, brilliant comedians, faults and all, but reinforcing why they were treasured by millions and will continue to be.

I saw this movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. I became aware of their tour after researching an old building locally in Belfast, that used to be a hotel. Stan and Ollie stayed there in 1953 as part of the tour in this film.

I can see how John C. Reilly was so connected emotionally with portraying Oliver Hardy. He came across so humbled, with such sincerity and love for Oliver. Amazing director. The 2018 movie had me feel very emotional and I cried a lot. I grew up in 1970s with re-runs of Stan and Laurel. Great representation of such a wonderful comic duo of late 20s and 30s. 💋💋💋❤️❤️❤️💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

It is a great movie. Not a documentary but a peek into their many personas. Steve and John were so good in their roles such that now I associate their voices with the characters. Had to do a rare thing and buy the movie so I can enjoy it again and again.

What's your favourite Laurel & Hardy? My dad got my brothers and I into it, and we'd watch them on TV, as my dad had with HIS dad back in the 60s. So we were raised on this stuff. I haven't seen all of their work, but I particularly love "Me and My Pal" (consequently, when I got married my brother was best man, and he got me a jigsaw puzzle as a wedding gift because of that short), "Another Fine Mess," and "Towed in a Hole." I also always loved "Flying Deuces" and "Blockheads" for their longer ones.

“Blotto” (we drank your liquor!”) and Below Zero (“Don’t forget, plenty of onions!”) are two that spring to mind. Honestly all those shorts from the early thirties were marvellous. If you watch any full length comedy movie, 2 or 3 belly laughs in the whole film would be considered a success, sometimes you don’t get any. Every one of those 20 minute shorts by L&H had at least 2 or 3 burst out loud moments, sometimes more.

First discovered Stan and Babe in High School back in 1974. For me, the short “Brats” where they play their own kids, has always been my favorite.

Clueless interviewer claims Hardy weighed 400 lbs. (!) and recommends the painful and demeaning This Is Your Life episode with L&H. Reilly politely schools her.
@jrderelict
@jrderelict 5 лет назад
Yes, the L&H This is Your Life episode is tough to watch in spots. Ralph Edwards acted like an unctuous slimeball and kept making cracks about Ollie's weight (which Ollie later spectulated was about 360 pounds: www.lettersfromstan.com/stan-1956-07.html ). Check out the L&H Water Rats segment, recorded Sept 29, 1955: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ez2LXjsTN_k.html

So glad John was quick to put that fire out. I remember watching it the first time when it was on the end of a VHS tape of one of their features, and it was about as comfortable as watching the Nuremberg Trials.
@NorthWriter
@NorthWriter 5 лет назад
Yeah, you watch scenes like the dances in Way Out West and the "Shine On Harvest Moon" dance in Flying Deuces, and you realize that, for a big guy, Ollie had TONS of grace and poise. He moved very effortlessly and gracefully.
@iansmith7698
@iansmith7698 5 лет назад
A little unfair. She asked better questions than I've seen other interviewers ask and as a result got answers here that other interviewers didn't get (as John points out). It's a slip up but an understandable one in the heat of the moment I think. Great that John jumps straight on it and corrects here so no harm done. And to anybody who doesn't twig how Laurel and Hardy had been cruelly tricked in the set-up for This Is Your Life (and why would they?) it IS a good watch. You have to know the backstory to know how sad that particular show was.
@rackinfrackin
@rackinfrackin 5 лет назад
@@iansmith7698 Anyone with an ounce of tact can see how rudely Edwards is treating Hardy. Sorry it escaped your notice. Try watching it with the sound on next time.

My only criticism of this movie is that they squandered a unique and poignant opportunity to show the 150-plus pound weight loss of Oliver Hardy before he died.
