Steve Coogan & Louise Mensch Clash Over Press Regulation On Newsnight [30.10.2011]

For upto date news on the hacking scandal, follow me on Twitter @ #!/...
Paul Dacre, the Daily Mail's editor in chief, on Wednesday launched a staunch defence of the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) as he addressed the latest seminar of the Leveson Inquiry, which was set up in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal.
In it Mr Dacre said that over-regulating the press would "put democracy itself in peril".
Comedian Steve Coogan and Louise Mensch MP, a member of the culture select committee, joined Jeremy Paxman to discuss whether he was right, whether press self-regulation works and whether the tabloids are a necessary evil.

You need to research "free man on the land" and also the consent of the governed. Also research Legalese and the duality of words used in law. When you're asked if you "understand", you're actually being asked to give consent, not if you can comprehend that which is put to you. Understand = stand under. Thus giving them rights over you ie. the consent of the governed. The only Law is Common Law. Don't take my word for it though, research it for yourself.

There may not be a legal definition, but there's a common sense definition which we all know. If you caught me looking through your bedroom window, we would both know I had breached your privacy, and exactly what that means. I have no sympathy or interest in celebrity's lives. But when the press things like hacking into a murdered girl's phone and bribing policemen, they have broken the law and they need regulated.

Socialism was the 20th century's greatest tragedy, and could well end up being this century's as well. Although its evangelists promised equality, prosperity and security, it was only responsible for misery, poverty, and absolutely 100% of the time ended up in tyranny. Actually, it is interesting to note that socialism in the 20th century did achieve a form of equality after all, but only in the form that all people in socialist countries were equal: in their misery and poverty.

If you read a book like the Ragged Trousered Philanthropist you can see what conditions were like before there was a welfare system in this country. Those charitable organisations were very ineffectual, and usually went in for hypocritical Christian piety and hymn-singing. They couldn't cope with the sheer volume of poverty. The government *does* use its monopoly on force to help people make profits. We all know that the law is different for the rich.

@Jason Smith Look it up. There's a thing called the internet. You're already on it. You're half way there. When a man crosses a billionaire, then turns up dead on his own doorstep after turning a funny colour, and the police describe it as "unexplained but not suspicious", something questionable has happened. An unexplained death is, after all, the very definition of suspicious.

That's weird. I normally hate Steve Coogan for being a boring self-interested, ego-maniac whose comedy usually hinges on embarassing, boring, self-interested, egomaniacal characters. Here he actually holds himself in an intelligent, mature and articulate manner. It's a good job to defend yourself against snarling media pundit like Paxman's without falling into a tiresome fight over who's right.

Every industry and walk of life is subject to some form of regulation and accountability. I don't understand why anyone argues that the press should be exempt from this universal rule. Ian Hislop eloquently and succinctly outlines the dangers of press regulation in the first video result if you search for him on here. Coogan's defence of the McCanns and Dowlers is moot because phone hacking IS already illegal. Policing the actions of the press is what's important, not what they publish. Harsher sentences for breaking the law are required; what the press publishes will inherently be acceptable if their actions are moral and legal, so target the latter not the former.

So you're saying people who have literally nothing to do with the slaughter of millions, myself for example, should somehow feel responsible? Simply because we believe a supposedly similar thing - although I can say now that I despise all forms of dictatorship, including the 'left wing' ones of Stalin and Mao etc. And I take it you're a believer in free market economics? Surely by your logic then, you should feel responsible for the starvation, poverty, suffering and death of millions?
@MyFantazmagazzle
@MyFantazmagazzle 12 лет назад
No, that's what American media has formed it into. And I say that as an Englishman. It's only shorthand for what you said by people who don't actually know. The idea of small government, limited state in terms of welfare, and deregulation of a market economy are actually very liberal beliefs. If you are going to critique the left, please be more precise. And left wing beliefs are quite good. Equality and rights for women and all races, child labour laws, minimum wage, healthcare for the poor etc
