The looks on Jessie's and Adam's faces early in the video when Steve went off was priceless! Anyway, I'm not sold on Tre yet, but I think he is also posturing saying "ya know, I'd prefer to keep Mitch..." so that when he deals him he can be seen as someone who was basically forced to trade him. But Leafs fans, we need to consider how it will feel if this is another Matthew Tkachuk situation, where we deal Mitch for a couple decent players and Mitch goes on to win a Cup with new team. Leafs issue is their D core. Probably bottom 10 in the league. You can’t have such a weak defense and expect to win championships. You also can’t win without superstar/hall of fame level talent, which the leafs already have. They need 2-3 additions to their D core, and more stability in net…. and a coach that doesn’t use sporadic trial and error during games in attempt to fix things.

A question comes to mind: Should Brad have given Matthew Tkachuk and Bennet more money to stay? The Leafs aren't stupid, they just recognise they're players are paying 30% more in taxes than equivalent players in the USA. The NHL should pay players directly instead of each franchise having different levels of taxation.

@@csolivais1979 Replace the Cap with Luxury tax.
@jsquared1013
@jsquared1013 3 месяца назад
@@csolivais1979 US federal + most average states is, I believe, still less than Canadian tax rates. Not the big advantage that Florida or Texas have, but still probably enough to show an effect. One idea I've had to negate the "tax advantage" of some cities would be to calculate the cap after taxes. E.g. Player A plays in Bigtropolis and is on a $5M/yr contract, and in Bigtropolis that means he pays roughly a 40% tax rate; Player B plays in Mediumville and is on a $4.3M contract, and in Mediumville that puts him at around a 30% tax rate. Both would then only count as $3M AAV for cap purposes, as both players would receive roughly $3M after taxes. Teams in higher-taxed cities already have to spend a bit more as it is, but with this method it wouldn't affect their cap calculation, and it wouldn't be as big a factor in players choosing where to play since they would see the same after-tax income.

If that's the case, that Marner has to go, it isnt this year. Leafs will have to let him go to free agency. There is no world where Marner waives his no trade clause to go to an inferior team, so his next contract will be less than.

@@doozey365 but how would you define an "inferior team" considering there were 8 that went deeper in the playoffs than the Leafs? Do you think he'd turn down Dallas (no state income tax, so gets to keep bigger chunk of salary) or Vancouver (still Canadian team, possibly gearing for another playoff run next year)? I cite these examples not knowing who has enough cap space for his monster contract nor whose system he'd best fit into.

@@jsquared1013 let me rephrase it then, those teams that would be in same category of Marner being able to play with good players dont have the cap space. What people don’t realize is that Marner is not the problem, it was always the coaching and how the players are deployed. Marner needs to play with a tough guy that can protect him/give him confidence. If you look at his time with the London Knights that’s what he always had on his line and was successful. Keefe was a huge part of the problem in Toronto’s playoff failures. Marner is an elite player and defends very well. Losing him will be a huge blow. It’s better to to run it back and not make a panic trade, which the leafs will lose. Get rid of Tavares after next season (or he takes a massive discount), and go from there.
@pomerlain8924
@pomerlain8924 3 месяца назад
Marner is the problem. He literally turned away from an empty net to score because he didn't want to get hit. He had 3 points in 7 games. His point production in the playoffs falls off from his regular season production. He IS the problem. It's been 8 years, and you can't keep blaming his struggles on coaching. All this coddling of him is pathetic. A guy making $10.93M should be carrying the team when other guys struggle. He disappears. Not to mention, where would the Leafs find a tough guy with LITTLE cap space and no assets worth trading other than Marner?
@murray1978

Keep MM for the year. He won't waive his NMC? Fine. Relaod next summer with 23 million in cap space just off of MM and JT. Plus the cap will probably go up by 3-5 million. The wisest moves for MLSE will transpire as follows: Have Marner play out his contract and not resign him - it doesn't matter if they get nothing for him in a trade this year, his contract will be off the books, they would have paid him anyway. Players on their final year of expiring contracts play harder. Once Draisaitl is available end of next year they should put the best offer forward to acquire his superior PLAYOFFS services. The current highest paid player on the Leafs couldn't care less about winning in the playoffs - he's not going to risk injury, or sacrifice long term future pain to do whatever it takes to win, it also cuts into his down time back home in Arizona (chilling on the yacht with Bieber and his friends). 34 wouldn't sign for eight years because he wants to keep his options open, so four years is all he gave us. If the Leafs wimp out again in next years playoffs then get rid of Prima Donna Matthews and go after a player that will sacrifice his own well being to win. When McDavid comes available the following year it's incumbent on MLSE to bring him home - If Lebron can go home to Cleveland, McDavid can come home to Toronto - his career is finite, and too short. Who cares if Matthews scores 80 regular season goals. If he can't dominate in the playoffs we don't need him. He'll be more than happy to go play in La La land. Then take the 13.25M he's getting and use it to bring in McDavid for 15M. Of course those in charge of hockey operations only view 34 as a merchandise revenue generator for MLSE - they too don't care if the Leafs win in the playoffs - they'll still make their millions in salary, and don't have the balls, or are willing to follow through with what's best for building a playoff competitive team..Bowmanville Dave

I hope Marner signs long term. Tavares will either be gone or will be paid far less in 1 year. That has been the Leafs problem for years; they keep trading their players so nobody has played here long term. Very few. A handful each decade since 1967. Other teams keep their players. Toronto rarely does. They trade them, they go elsewhere and win cups.

The leafs management team doesnt have a clue. They drafted well with Matthews, Marner, Nylander, and Rielly.They have no draft picks, no goaltending and no stud defenseman.They seem to be actually getting worse.

I see potential for a Guentz Marner trade. It all depends how much Guentz is asking for.

If I were MM I would play out my contract and sign with Boston or Montreal. That will certainly give the finger to all the Sunday morning GM's. I've never heard so much nonsense. Honest Q; if MM and WN both made 11.5 and the Leafs made it known that both were available via trade, which player would be more sought after. I know the answer.

Agree with Steve 100%. Treliving needs to do whatever needs to be done to trade Marner.

Extend Mitch for 12,900,000 / 8 year contract and be done with it. He's a great team guy and I'm sure he'd accept team friendly discount to help win the Stanley Cup.

Mitch is a fan favorite and has averaged 100 points for 4 seasons in a row in 82 game season. He’s the Leafs’ leading scorer in playoffs for the last few years. He elevates his game when the stakes are highest. He makes players around him play better. His market value is around 14-15M but he loves Toronto and wants to stay and win the Stanley Cup for the Leafs so he’d settle for a only 12,9M and leave money on the table to use to sign quality depth players to fill the roster. The Leafs would be crazy to not accept it.

As a fan I dont think anyone cares how much money a player makes, what they care about is the % of the cap that salary represents. If the cap is 1 trillion $ and Mitch Marner makes 65 million $, % wise fans would be happy with that deal. Its not $ amounts, you're having the wrong conversation :D

I completely agree with Steve. From an outsider looking in, anyone that thinks they can move forward with Marner is insane. Trade him for what you can get and move on now. Don't let him leave for nothing and sure as hell don't extend him

There are Penguins fans lobbying for them to go after Marner. I think that is utterly insane. Tyler Bertuzzi, Max Domi, fine by me. That’s probably what the problem is, Pittsburgh is an old team and want to play a game that is somewhat clean, while also being cool with Crosby bouncing Suban’s head off the ice… The only chance The Penguins have is to go after young, hyper aggressive players. Aside from Crosby, the “core” of that team can’t reach the level needed to win the cup. And most likely that window is completely closed. (Crosby getting another gold medal isn’t) Mitch Marner is a scrub. He was a scrub in Toronto, he’d be a scrub in Pittsburgh. He is not Phil Kessel.

I agree we need some new defense and a better goalie and Mitch is our only option to let go of out of the core however my question is what happens if we do all of that and still have no cup that seems very likely to me idk why but the leafs can never seem to get it done no matter what and with us getting better dman and a goalie what’s left ? Trading away the core again ? Idk man I’m actually starting to worry I’ll die before I see my leafs lift the cup and I’m only 19 in my lifetime I’ve only seen 1 round win
