He is an incredible song writer. And as he said bands get famous for there great songwriting. And he is. So much that people dont realize that Miranda Lamberts first big hit Kerosene. She ripped off his music. The words to the song she wrote but the music part she ripped off of Steve Earle who didnt realize at the time. Listen to Steve Earl's Feel Alright then listen to Kerosene or the other way around but it's his music even down to the harmonica part. Nobody realized it for a long time. I believe I would be getting some of her money. But Steve Earle has been 1 of my favorite singer, song writer, and the music to go with the all. I can turn on copper head road and never get tired of that, Hillbilly highway, maybe cause I'm a Hillbilly, guitar town, they just go on. Mad props to you Steve and your great skill of writing and playing great songs as always. So good. Seen him in concert when that album came out and was awesome. Check out the songs I just said and you will see its Steve Earles Feel Alright to a tee other than the words. So she got a big boost up the ladder with her first #1 hit without people even realizing its Steve Earles she ripped off. Keep jamming and writing I can never get tired of listening to steve Earle. Thank You Steve for the great songs which made us great memories. 🥁🎼🎶🎶🎵😎🎵

I thought this was Steve Earle at his roughest and rawest. It takes a special kind of confidence to go into a broadcast environment and just pull a song out of the hat the way he does here. I'm sure he could perform it better in terms of technique but I doubt he'd recapture the spirit of this.

I think music today is plagued by perfection. People have forgotten the beauty in imperfection, is what really makes a great song pop. Like this rendition of a song has raw emotion in it, it could be sung better but its damn good the way it is.

You drive six hours to a town where you spent a weekend four years ago. You eat in a diner. You stroll the main drag and then go to the discount hotel, flic through the movies, give up, don't touch the hard juice as you have a gig and you don't want your voice sounding like an alligator so you take a puff, toss and turn and sleep. In the late morning you go down to the same diner since it's the only familiar place in town and at last have some coffee. And then some eggs and bacon and an English. Maybe you put on a new set of strings and let them cook for a few hours until the gig. Then you show up and see most of the people there are less than half as young as you and you know right off you have to start translating yourself into their idiom. You try and get across the significance of the 'songs' - they're mile markers in freedom, they're outposts in dimensions untouched but by the cold vacuum of space, but you string the songs together to make them count and tell some of the story and then at the end you try and get across what a song like Midnight Rider means - what it's like to fly your starship into a carbon hurricane of denial of soul and the need to feel there is more meaning and depth that awaits and is not just something that happened for a while in youth - you hope and pray and are embarrassed for trying too hard but it's the same old thing, this hunger to keep the mysterious charge that exists in the air and that can be activated if you play just right . . . it has to be attempted! And what else is there to do that matches that? You step on your regrets and remorses and let them blend into all the other static and roughness left behind and move on. Plan to do it again. Don't look back.

I honestly have no clue how people are going to shit on Steve, it’s almost like they don’t realize just how old the dude is. He’s hands down one of the best song writers in country music and there was a time when he absolutely was one of the best singers as well. As corny as it sounds Copperhead Road is still one of my favorite songs to this day, it’s a tradition down at the Grizzly Rose in Denver to play it at least once a night.

Musicians like Earle n van zandt. Are not "country" musicians. Story tellers. They are storytellers who happen to play music. As an example. 27 years ago I knew nothing about van zandt. Saw him open for cowboy junkies. Realized very quickly, the junkies where not in his league as entertainers n story tellers. He held our attention by himself. He wasn't a great player in any technical way nor was he a great vocalist who's voice soars. He,Earl, and so many more have no real "genre" . They live n breath stories attached to music. Cheers.

I'm a 55 year young Kiwi (New Zealander) and I had my near-death motorcycle accident on Friday 27 April 1990 when I was 26 - it ultimately resulted in me losing my entire left leg, hip, and left side of my pelvis plus I suffered numerous other internal injuries. I have suffered chronic stump pain (neuromas - groups of nerves) even though there is no stump ever since. I still love motorcycles and can still ride. One of my favorite road movies of all time is 'Easy Rider'. The themes of the movie I can really relate to. However can I please say - that life ain't no free ride, no sir, there is always a price to pay for living, freedom doesn't come for free. It costs to be free. What is the price? What does it cost? We are born to die. And in between we live. I love a quote from Martin Luther King Jr; “If a man hasn’t found something he will die for, he isn’t fit to live.” Well, I've got to run to keep from hiding And I'm bound to keep on riding And I've got one more silver dollar But I'm not gon' let 'em catch me, no Not gon' let 'em catch the midnight rider And I don't own the clothes I'm wearing And the road goes on forever And I've got one more silver dollar But I'm not gon' let 'em catch me, no Not gonna let 'em catch the midnight rider And I've gone by the point of caring Some old bed I'll soon be sharing And I've got one more silver dollar But I'm not gon' let 'em catch me, no Not gon' let 'em catch the midnight rider No, I'm not gon' let 'em catch me, no Not gon' let 'em catch the midnight rider No, I'm not gon' let 'em catch me, no I'm not gon' let 'em catch the midnight rider But I'm not gonna let 'em catch me, no Not gon' let 'em catch the midnight rider Songwriters: Gregg L. Allman / Robert Kim Payne

Copperhead Road is his Born to Run, Midnight Rider, Seasons of Wither and Born on the Bayou. Jack Broadbent and Dylan Leblanc are the new breed...but John Hiatt and Steve Earle aren't done yet.

I seen him in 1986, 1989. 86 concert was great, in 89 he was so high on heroin nobody could understand what he was singing. His timing with the band was 3 beats behind everyone else. Slurring the lyrics. Terrible show.

Steve is a legend, so I'll probably be attacked for this criticism. But where the F did he get the chords he's playing there? Surely not from Greg. Not even close to being correct.

This is a deceptively difficult song to do. It has a certain groove that is difficult to get into as a solo guitarist. And it moves like a horse arrow on a railroad track through a ghost fog. Ive tried to play it many times and always fall flat. Mine comes across about like Steve’s here. No knock to Mr Earle, I have all his albums. Its just not an easy song to make drive without some jangle and slide.

Thanks for sharing, Strombo. Awesome cover tune of "Midnight Rider" by Steve Earle minus "The Dukes". Just a straight ahead acoustic guitar performance.

Watch this at least every other week, great performance of a great song. After a while though I get more and more irritated by the 2 min narrative before the music begins, almost like its robbing the song of its virtue. Not that what he is saying isnt true or that I dont value the perspective it is almost certainly well informed ... just ruins the feeling for some reason. Prolly just me though.
