I think it was a bad time in his life....his demons were closing in. as a recovering addict myself, I can tell you they can overcome you in a heartbeat. thank God he made it out.
i thank God you made it out too... Understanding is a beautiful thing, knowing someone else understands how you feel means so much. I'm still working on it of course...
@@danmccaffrey2157 agreed. An Old Timer told me once that we only keep what we have by giving it away. I found this to be very true. I've been on this journey nearly twelve years and I'm learning something new everyday. God bless you.
@@elizabethsizemore4714 I'm glad you're still here. I can't pretend to know what you've been through, but I know you're still here, and you've got something to say. You might not know it, maybe you do, but I believe that we all suffer through something, and we do for a reason; And the reason is to survive. Share. And save. You got through what you got through, not just to finish out your days just being thankful. No. You got through it so you could be a beacon of hope for someone else behind you. You got through it to inspire others. To lead even one more out of the darkness. I'm sorry for all you went through, but it did have a purpose. And the faces of those you've led back from the abyss prove it. Thank you for your courage and commitment. You're a hero. ✌🍻✌
so good. I couldn't pick a favorite steve earle song,.... but absolutely this one is at, or near the top of the list of songs that would be the soundtrack of my life. not just of his, but one of my favorite songs from anybody. he is one of american music's greatest treasures. I hope he is coping with the loss of his son, I can't imagine how that would feel. good vibes old friend.
I LITERALLY just got The Hard Way CD today! I'm so PUMPED! I have it blasting through the house, Mama and Daddy are having a sweet blast from the past 😂😂 Rock on Steve!!
The hard way is such a fab album, the song writing is brilliant, personal and hard hitting at times. He has a lot to say on this one, and it's well worth the listen.
Steve Earle's voice on this awesome track kills me. He snarles the lyrics with real venom. You want attitude and a badass punk spirit, look no further.
Steve Earle in his prime, are you kidding???? i've been a fan forever, Steve and I actually grew up in the same part of TX, he's got a couple of years on me, but encourages me to keep going, old as we both are!! The best ever.....
incredible, never, never, never gets old. been a fan of Steve's for 25 years, he never fails to give $500 worth of music for a $40 ticket at his shows. God bless Steve Earle.
I loved Steve for his music for years, too, but now I also love him as a person. In 2014 we got two big snowstorms in Jan. and Feb. Of all the hard luck, during the one in late Jan. John Hiatt was scheduled to play at the Birchmere, and we already had tickets. We had about 15" of snow, and that much is not typical so the plows were working overtime, and it was still snowing at nightfall. We couldn't even get up our hill. John Hiatt still played to a half-empty house because he *was* able to make it, so we were out the cost of tickets, (and JH's shows are $o expensive, well over $100 per seat!) In Feb, we had tickets for Steve Earle on the 13th and Rosanne Cash on the 14th. The next blizzard came on the 13th, it snowed all night and we got about 18" in total, but Steve had the consideration to cancel his show and reschedule it for Mar 13. That time, no snow. When we chatted with him after the concert, I said to him how grateful we were for him rescheduling the Feb show. And he was so sweet, he said he couldn't leave all those folks in the lurch.
I think this is a fucking great song and this album is one of my favorites. I saw him on this tour in Manchester in either 89 or 90 and I remember it to be a great gig. The album didn't do very well either in sales or critically but it was the country rock album I was looking for, a lot more rocky and edgy than his previous three albums. I met Steve a few years back when he was touring with Shawn Colvin and had him sign some of my albums. He was showing Shawn the album and saying that was a pic of him and his Grandad on the cover. I told him I thought it was a very underrated and maligned album and that was bollocks - it's a great record and he agreed - just listen to Billy Austin, Justice in Ontario, Regular Guy and others on it. I think this tour also spawned 'shut up and die like an aviator' which again is very underrated - just listen to tracks 12 thru 17 (Fearless heart to Dead Flowers) and tell me that ain't the best country rock ever.
I always thought this song was about a middle-aged guy that drove off one day in his Winnebago. Got me through some tough times when I was married. Don't ever get married... avoid women in general if you can, unless you find a good one. But you probably won't.
I feel this way a lot. I've been blessed with so many things, but I still look in the mirror and wonder who the hell that is that's looking back at me.
I read this quite some time ago, but I don't know why, I didn't take the trouble to "like" or comment, still your story stuck with me. It rings true all right...and it's a really sweet story. It must have been one of the best concerts you ever saw, truly unforgettable.
sometimes you're buried in the eye of the storm. But sometimes the eye of the storm produces your best work and thoughts. Waylon and Willie lived that, but so did Steve Earle.
Ha! This takes us to Missoula, MT on Saturday night 6.18.11 when Steve, Allison & The Dukes rocked us for three hours!!! Go, Steve, Go & THANKS FOR A GREAT SHOW!!!
Yes I agree he is the GREATEST! Best darn singer/songwriter out there! Really enjoyed his concert I went to this past Jan/10. I love his music... from his older songs right to his new songs!.
@@dustdevl3404 Agreed. When someone is singing and playing with passion and actually believe in what they're singing..it works. Along with his late son JTE it can be a blessing as much as a curse. I imagine that tour was a kind of torture for Steve, you could tell he wasn't at his best self and especially after the hard time "Copperhead Road" got getting spins on 'country radio' didn't help.
Cheers bud. I don't know if you've heard much of Justin's stuff but my god that boy could pick AND write.. if I could recommend you a song of his it's called 'moving on' and theres a version here live from KEXP, Its one of those songs that just grabs the listener it's almost uncomfortable to watch someone battle (so publicly at least) it's most definitely a double edged sword and that becomes very apparent watching that performance '3 chords and the truth' I guess. It's not sad, its upbeat and defiant..like 'The Other Kind' which is what brought it back to my mind. Best of luck with everything man.
ah, hell yeah, when the day has been crappy and people have accused you of ruining their lives or whatever the else you were supposed to do, this is the only thing that makes it all make some sort of sense...
Well, I did read the bio "Hard Core Troubadour", and "Fearless Heart, Outlaw Poet" is kicking around this indescribable landfill my other half calls a house somewhere too, but I read them both about 5 years ago before I got ill. Thus it really remarkable I retained anything at all, my memory was so severely sabotaged by the treatment. For a while it was all I could do to remember my own salient info, much less that of a songwriter whose work I love.
@joynthis so true, my friend...quality will always win out, Steve will be around a long, long, time after the same old country junk is gone...and even when all of us oldfolks, who have known and loved Steve for a long tme....and even when Steve, have gone on to the next place...he will still be here....always....
This is just Steve at his best in my honest opinion. Would love to see him rock it up again, but I feel he is a different place in his life now (well, clearly!) and the rock lifestyle has passed him by. Shame....still love him though.
@@darlincommitme Not only that, but with how GNR were being marketed at the time as 'the most dangerous band in the world'...Steve was living every bit as wild then. The story when he finally got caught with the crack, smack and his shooter going off when it fell is one hell of a story..a lucky, lucky boy! Could've went Soooo wrong!
