What amazing ,warm, loveable talent ! Am so happy we can still enjoy him, even tho he resides " up there" with John Prine !! Never understand why someone puts a thumbs down...why don't they just move on to something they DO like???
I don't know if I am the only person who feels this way, but every video I have seen of Steve makes it seem like he would have been the nicest person in the world to spend time wit.
Happy 64th birthday, Steve. (July 25th, 2012). We sure miss you, buddy. Thanks for this great video. It still kills me (in a good way) to see that sparkle in his eyes and mischievous smile... There will never be another like him....
After watching so many videos of Steve Goodman I get the overwhelming feeling that he would be one of the most fun and pleasant people to know. He always seems to be overflowing with joy.
I had not seen this clip. I am happy to have found it. When I was young I saw Steve Goodman perform a number of times in the Chicago area. I try to keep some of his songs alive in my own performing on open mic stages. Recently played "The Dutchman" as well as "City of New Orleans" which he wrote (not Arlo!). There are too many more I don't know. Like this one.
Thanks. That was something I didn't recall, if I ever heard that fact. I hung out and volunteered at a little folk club called "The 12th of Never" in Richton Park, south of Chicago in the early 1970s and he played there a lot, along with Eddie and Fred Holstein and many others, local and passing through. Saw Leo Kottke there on his first album tour, learned his song "Louise" after seeing him. Most of his stuff is way above my pay grade and his voice deeper than my basement.@@pdl4a
I've written a lot of songs... Some I thought I were pretty clever, sensitive, passionate, moving, funny, whatever... But, as easy as it seems to stand up there and, ad lib a song, I was never anywhere remotely even close to what Steve could do off the cuff like this... I saw him in '72 with Prine and, he made the show... Prine just got drunk and, exited himself off stage, barely after just a handful of songs... I became a big fan of Steve and, all his music, from that night on...
Yes indeed. What a damn shame that we weren't allowed to bring cameras and tape recorders to the shows back then. His between song comments were better than most stand-up comics best material.
jeeze, he must have broke a lot of g strings. one of the albums i have has a live track where he improvises a completely different song after he broke a g string.
+alicecooper91 In my acoustic band, I used to break about 6 strings a night. Mostly the B and G, but they might all break! I used to buy strings in bulk, a sleeve of 6 of one string. I think it was the guitar, but I could never fix it. And, I played hard, being the bass and the drums, also.
