Rick told a story about it. He said that one of his early reviews with Yes some critic said that Wakeman looked like an Octopus with his arms reaching for all these knobs and keyboards, and all these weird positions. So Rick became self conscious about it and when he saw that guy he offered the guy 150 dollars or something, and said "That's all I got you better sell that to me!" So he got that cape and put it on. It was a black cape with some gold paint or something. Then a few years later the long flowing gowns started showing up in bands so it's not really directly related to Wakeman's cape at least not for Steve Howe.
@robertbelchick8263
@robertbelchick8263 Год назад
I think the review said, "Rick Wakeman played remarkably well, except while he was playing he looked like a demented spider trying reach modules." he'd mentioned it on a radio show.

@mejsmith1 Yes, Rick struggled with alcoholism on and off during his entire career. Trevor Rabin commented once about the drug use going on in the band I think between Tony Kaye and Chris Squire who were (and still are) close friends but, of course, it never got out of hand the way Wakeman's drinking did.

There is an old article I read when it came out back in the early seventies about one of the guys from the Kinks actually hit Rick Wakeman after they got off. Evidently the Kinks were up next and, I guess, the singer or someone got super pissed because Yes went over their time allowed before the Kinks were to go on so Rick got punched because they thought his solos were too excessive. It's most likely an old Rolling Stone or something. So yeah. There is a history.

@mejsmith1 It's definitely 'suggested' that Chris did coke, yeah. So many rock stars did. So many of them had some serious trouble kicking the habit, after a while. And so many suddenly made shite music when they were in their 'coke period'. But then again, there are people who never touched coke and still make shite music... or did coke and still made good songs (like Steve Earle). Bottom like: drugs don't write songs for you, and they don't make you a good musician. You are, or you're not.

I have CHF myself, I was working on the airfield ramp in 100 degree heat for several years, trying to keep up with kids half my age, when I suddenly developed a "beer gut" without the beer after being dehydrated and working a double shift with no sleep. Luckily, I got diagnosed and have been actively managing it for the last 8 years. I really don't miss all the salt any more.

@mejsmith1 Bruford & Wakeman were boozers, Wakeman much more hardcore. Bruford used to drink large glasses of whiskey & coke all night at the clubs they played at. The rest of the classic line-up: Howe, Anderson & Squire were hash smokers & ocassional acid eaters. That's why they made that hippie music & not hillbilly music.

Alan in his own way was just as important to Yes as Bill. And for much, much longer! Let’s not forget his contributions to Yessongs, Tales, Relayer(! Alan’s own Close To The Edge, which by the way he owned anyway because it was he who took it out on tour. Subsequent live recordings across the ensuing decades back this up. Alan positively slayed Close To The Edge, the entire album. Anyone who sells Alan’s contribution to Yes short has not listened closely enough. Bill had great chops, among the best. He did not, however, have Alan’s passion, fire or muscle! You can clearly hear his love for Yes’ music in his playing, for something on the order of 45+ years, nearing and possibly even surpassing half a century), Going For The One, and all the subsequent releases across time. Lots, and lots, and LOTS(have I mentioned LOTS?!?!LOL) of great, great music. All this without even mentioning how he saved their bacon in 1973. Your Honor? I rest my case.😆❤️

@metamorphosis67 Who says Crosby wouldn't have made even better music when not being stoned? True, some musicians have found inspration in drug experiences (and in love, heartbreak, even constipation). Bit of grass, fine. But what made those songs good music is the fact that the were made by good musicians, not by stoned musicians. Same with jazz musicians: without heroin, Charlie Parker couldn't play that brilliant music. Without heroin, he couldn't even tie his shoes.

@metamorphosis67
@metamorphosis67 12 лет назад
@Bietel That's why David Crosby of CSN said that every note he ever played or sang he did stoned, because drugs never make you a good musician. That's why the Beatles started making terrible albums like Abbey Road instead of teenybopper gold when the acid hit them. Face it, for a lot of people in the 1960s & 1970s, drugs basically wrote the music for them & they would have never been the artists they ended up being if not for drugs. The difference between Yes's debut & Yes Album = lots of Hash.

i hope these guys release soon a new Yes studio album with Oliver Wakeman and Benoit...don't get me wrong I love Jon, but in a sort of way; he stalled the band in a very more new agie - soft rock band, instead of the powerfull and progressive band they use to were in the past..though I enjoyed "Open Your Eyes", "The Ladder" and "Magnification"
@frankhoulihanfh4972
@frankhoulihanfh4972 9 месяцев назад
All better albums than credit is given for, but Magnification is a stone cold Yes classic hiding in plain sight for the future to discover! Massively overlooked recording. So beautiful! The Dreamtime, In The Presence Of, Time Is Time conclusion is truly remarkable. All the grandness of the two epics back to back, followed by this tiny, humble, glorious and almost impossibly beautiful coda… I’ve been a monster fan since my adolescence and I’m still discovering the glory and grandeur of and in their music. A well as deep as any band drilled in my lifetime. They were genius. They were fearless, audacious and gifted. Nothing like them, before or since, and I think we’re all slowly coming to the realization, now, that something like Yes is, at most a once in a lifetime event, and probably even rarer than that. So lucky to have lived during their time are we. The future will be jealous of us, as the full impact of their achievements reverberate down the halls of the centuries, the millenia.
