For many film and television editors, color grading can appear to be a skill shrouded in a veil of mystery with only a select few possessing the know-how to unlock the secrets of this sometimes elusive world. But Color grading is an important process in creating excellent video productions, and knowing how to use waveform monitors, or "scopes" is critical in doing it right. Whether you think scopes are too technical, or you want to improve your skills, Steve Hullfish uses Adobe Speedgrade and guides you through the process of color correction and using a scope.

This is fantastic I'm only just learning I've watched lots of videos of people trying to explain how but you've nailed it for me understanding the scopes and how to use them correctly to find the correct Blacks, whites and saturation & mid tone levels thanks so much for taking the time to share your knowledge with us. Cheers Spokz from Darwin, Australia

Why did you not adjust the clipped blue channel back to the whitepoint with the other channels?
@psycholarge
@psycholarge 6 лет назад
Because it was already clipping in the highlights

Why can't the capture button be integrated to the NLE/speedgrade software?

The title should be the art of color correction not color grading. Good lesson though

This is not the right way to do it, sorry. He balanced the green gamma to the red gamma without first checking to see if either one was at the correct value. This will be a problem if the channel you are balancing to, i.e. your "reference" channel, is at the incorrect value. It will be a disaster if you are trying to match two or more cameras in a multi-camera shoot. The center gray chip on your chart, chip #6 (26% reflectance), should be at 57. The way most guys do it is to set up the green channel first: whites at 100, center chip at 57 and the black patch at 0. Now balance the red and blue channels to the green channel. This is not the best video to demonstrate color grading on because of the clipped blue channel. You can't unclip in grading if the source material is clipped. If you can't get a test chart right you're not going reproduce a scene accurately no matter what, so I wouldn't dismiss the usefulness of the chart the way he did, especially if you have to match two or more cameras in a multi-camera shoot. If you're after a special "look" then deal with that once you have your camera properly balanced. I've been doing this for decades so I know whereof I speak :-)
