I believe it was called a lifetime of training around these deadly snakes and others that allowed him to approach them in that fashion. If you notice he generally told people to not do as he did, he was trained professional. When I was still rescuing reptiles, I would handle most of the snakes with just taking them gently by the tail, except or two rattlesnakes species.
