Apple founder Steve Jobs talks to reporter Pat Kenny at the company’s Cork plant in 1980.
On 24 January 1984 the first Apple Macintosh computer went on sale. The Apple prided itself on its user-friendly interface, came in a nine inch black and white monitor, accommodated one 3.5 inch floppy disc, and ran the Mac OS 1.0.
Apple has long been synonymous with Ireland and set up a manufacturing plant in Hollyhill Industrial Estate overlooking Cork city. On 25 November 1980 the programme ‘Public Account’ broadcast a report by Pat Kenny from the Apple plant in Cork, when Pat met up with self-made millionaire and Apple founder Steve Jobs.
Pat Kenny speaks to Steve Jobs about the origins of Apple and how they came to set up their manufacturing plant in Cork. Steve comments
We started off building a computer because we couldn’t afford to buy one.
Then all their friends wanted one which gave them the initial market indication that there was a demand for computers. Steve differentiates Apple computers as more “sophisticated” than other computers. Steve predicts that computers will be used extensively in the home, in education and in business. When questioned about the usability of the Apple, Steve comments that the computer weighs about 12lbs, so;
"if you don’t like what it’s doing, you can throw it out the window."
When the Apple plant opened it was somewhat unconventional in its treatment of its workers. Apple operated a “no clock-in” policy opting instead to trust their employees.
This episode of the programme ‘Public Account’ was broadcast on 26 November 1980.

The man never did himself any favours. Difficult to work with, created a ton of enemies and relied on others to imply expertise in his field. Quite similar to Steve Jobs now that I think of it.

I think Dell has a manufacturing plant in Limerick idk how likely you are to get a computer actually made there though

I think Zenith and Compaq made PC's here as well for a while. Atari and later Namco made arcade machines in Tipperary. Ireland still exports 6 billion quids worth of computer chips a year.

@@ShapeyFiend You had DEC and Wang making minis here-in Galway and Limerick-which were both literally or figuratively taken over by Compaq and Dell. Wang made some PCs too, incl first I owned personally. There were a bunch of manufacturers around Dublin too, of course. Memory is hazy, but I think Packard Bell were there. And of course the huge Intel plant in Leixlip.

Steve Jobs, Apple 🍎 Computers in Ireland 1980. Steve Jobs was a Buddist, oh, well. lol RIP 🙏Not that I am against any faith or non-faith , I am not. Just technocrats I am concerned about and Coorperations making all the money. I am not against wealth, per say, only what they make with tax shelters, and tax breaks, while the rest of us get drippings they choose to leave for us. That is not looking so well in 2022. THANKS AGAIN♥️

According to Jobs' biographer (Walter Isaacson) Jobs chose the name because “it sounded fun, spirited and not intimidating...plus, it would get us ahead of Atari in the phone book.” But Woz has yet another story of the origin of the name so who knows?
