@@KennyAronoffOfficial Was he a JAZZ player ? ....I remember other guys of the TEN guitarist with their chapters in that book were the great JOE PASS ,,,Instructor DON MOCK and I believe possibly LARRY CARLTON.
*Kenny Aronoff* I am Sorry brother.Sometimes i get so excited with the interview i space out on who Brought this AMAZING INTERVIEW* *The Kenny Aronoff Sessions are truly amazing* *THANK YOU BROTHER for ANOTHER BANGER*
Well, I will never forget how his music on candy man helped me through the hard times I was facing in the 90ies, when in a span of two years two of my band members both died of a brain tumor. All I can say is thank you Steve for all the great music you gave to us! God bless you, your family and friends! Cheers DimiZ
Any due royalties that’s coming to him or that he fights for is WELL DESERVED in my eyes. He’s humble about it too. Like Joe Perry once said: “those songs are your babies…and people come in to cut and maim and ultimately take them away from you….and it hurts.” I heard that in some interview years back and never forgotten that statement. I’m sure Luk can relate to it. Thanks Kenny for netting Luk and dragging him in for the hang. It’s always interesting with Luk in the room.
A very seasoned guy who’s been through just about all you can think of, and came out the other side to tell the story - and some to be forgotten about. That’s all of us though...we all have secrets! Love your channel brother. How I wish Hal Blaine was still around so you could coax some stories out of him!
@@KennyAronoffOfficial Apparently ELVIS wore them in bed at Graceland ,,,In the shower & latrine...In the kitchen doing the vegetables...lol....Elvis liked to keep his cool even in his domestic life....He was so amazingly cool that you could keep FROZEN PEAS in him for a MONTH.....Elvis was so HIP he had difficulty seeing over his PELVIS....lol
Thanks, Kenny, for this interview. I recently finished reading your excellent book. Wow, how did you survive everything? You NEVER stopped! Read Steve's book a few years ago. Another excellent book. You guys are so interesting and have had such amazing experiences!!
I was lucky enough to catch the end of this era, in the studios of Chicago in the early 1980’s. Chicago Trax, Chicago Recording Company, Streeterville, Universal, Paragon, Studio Media, Tanglewood, even the great Soto Sound… Constant work. Learning to sleep on a control room couch with the mains blaring! 😄 What a time!!! It was like being in heaven. Best. Time. Ever.
What a fantastic chat between you guys. These stories are so cool to hear! Steve is absolutely brilliant. What a funny lovely guy! Thank Kenny for having for this fantastic interview! Love Steve!! You guys are the Best! ❤❤ 🇨🇦✌️❤
Two outstanding musicians who understand music. They are who they are because they worked hard and learned their craft. There’s just not many like this anymore. Great musicians produce great music….that’s the bottom line. These two are in a league of their own. Great interview. Luke, the album is fantastic.🎸✌️😎Thanks Kenny!
Two of my most favourite musicians on the planet just chewing the fat. Could listen to it for hours. Hadn’t realised you’d started this Kenny, then this popped up because I’m always looking for Luke vids. Bloody great. Satch tour was unbelievable- front row in Manchester so great to see you up close after so many years
Kenny, great show. One of the best, if not the best Luke interview on YT!!! Some very unique stories to say the least. But, you had my guy on two weeks ago. Big Doobie Bros, and the rest, fan from 1973, I'm 64, and then in junior college I heard TOTO when it came out. WTF, who is this. Remember, Van Halen was tracking too!!! Well, 40+ years in and all over TOTO, I started my guitar collection in 2005, 75 to date. I acquired Steve's Stage 2 Music Man and he had signed it in 2006. Fast forward, I acquired during Gavin Menzies auction. It was named #2 Pu$$* on the headstock back. As he did many of his guitars. On February 27, 2023 in Charleston, SC, I took the guitar and "The GOZ" helped me get the entire band's signatures on that Serial #G03672 "Artist Division" Luke Blue/HSS Mint Axe.. Steve, a very smart guy, was keen enough to sign it below the 2006 sig and that ever familiar "S***&&^^%%$$" scribble and '23. I can't show it here and when he did a YT for Ernie Ball I held that exact guitar up with the video, well I almost sharted myself. What a memory and one I will always have, while I'm here, for life.
Not too many people I would listen to for an hour on RU-vid. Lukather's always entertaining and you did a great job being the interviewer. On a second note: To me there is something odd with the audio. Seems to drop out when the level is low!!! Thanks again.
Luv the record business conversation. Super interesting interview. I knew nothing about Lukather before today. Your Coffee Club with Steve could be called: The Caffiends. Keep the shows a-comin'! Please bring the podcast/youtube show to Philly.
Steve Lukather has achieved a level of success that is simply unimaginable for 99.999% of people who even tried to learn to play any instrument. Even with his worldwide success and the countless millions of dollars he has made, he is one of the most grounded, pleasant, and humble human beings in the business. Steve has always been a very approachable, well-spoken and highly respectable class act with a work ethic that is absolutely second to none anywhere. There are just not very many people left in this world like Steve and we can all learn a lot from his approach and work ethic.
Just settling down to watch this video. Hoping he is going to talk about I Want You which he played on for Brothers Johnson. This has some of his finest work but rarely gets any mention or the attention it deserves. Brothers Johnson are mentioned amongst the long list of people he's worked with at beginning of video. That's something at least.
Two of the biggest GUNS "Hired" in music together!!!! So refreshing seeing amazing monster muscicians so humble, warm and funny! They could be my grandads and I would never get tired to listen to their stories! Thank you for the interview Kenny, didn't know you were out there, just subscribed to your channel !!!!!
@@KennyAronoffOfficial This was great btw Kenny hearing you both talk about your careers. Many thanks 🙏🏻 Being a drummer myself I should also mention for what it’s worth that you’re one of my favourite drummers!
Great chat! Love hearing Luke talk about his life in music. Would have liked to hear him talk about his Mellencamp feud though. I am originally from Bloomington and lived next door to John when he was at his old house on 46. He gets a bad rap from townies but I have always had good interactions with him. Any who great video and thanks for sharing, subbed for sure!
Damn, I thought there was going to be a second book. Not with the nasty stories, but more like some insight in all of the sessions Luke did. More like a musicians book.
@@KennyAronoffOfficial Not meaning to slight you, Kenny. You can have a documentary film too. Grin. But a documentary/film of Toto that includes the wildness that surrounded them would be very entertaining.
@@Calbear94 And she has been such a "peach" with Luke and Paich in court. I understand Jeffrey's estate is managed by her but seriously, she did nothing to help create the music so I wish she would just go away. It is the Toto fans and music lovers in general that are losing out.
My hope is that Steve P. continues to feel nostalgic after the SunsetSound interview he gave with Paich. Maybe after Bobby K.'s documentary, Kite on a String, comes out?
Considering Toto's use of professional studios over the years, I wish they would put some of their albums out in 5.1 especially the debut and Tambu. The theme music that bookends the episode calls to mind a one-off album from Abraxas Pool, which the song is called Boom Ba Ya Ya. (Gregg Rolie, Neal Schon and former Santana members)
Great Interview! So interesting to see you two Guys together Kenny, i came to know you through John Fogerty, and shortly after that rediscovered Toto and really got know them. What an amazing band. Might you do an interview with Simon Phillips? He's one of the GOATS (like you 😉) and since he contributed to the new Bridges album... that would be a great opportunity.
Still remember begging my mom for Beatle Boots.. Same thing, I remember the min I heard JFK was shot and the min my life changed seeing the Beatles on Sullivan!
@@KennyAronoffOfficial For what ever reason, those two events were frozen into my brain. I'm not comparing them, beyond knowing exactly what I was doing and where I was in both cases. The Beatles transformation was so complete, I was combing my hair down by morning! By time Hard Days Night came out. We had Beatle Boots, Beatle wigs, Beatle 45s, and Beatle Cards had replaced our Tops Baseball cards. By 1974 I was at Berklee! I've heard Luke, Billy Joel, and countless others tell the exact same story with the exact same results. Pretty Amazing if you think about it. Agree 100% re the early 80s! I owned a 24tk Rm in Boston and was engineering in NYC. Back then Eastern had an hourly shuttle Bos to NYC for 50 bucks! God, those were the days.. But, I have such a clear memory of moving drummers out of our Drum Booth into the main studio! Then spending weeks trying to figure out where the room mics go! Back then Power Station the studio and band was rocking! In fact, Studios and Music shops from 42-48th were booming.. Not unlike your cannons on Jackie & Diane.. :-) In fact, I may have introduced a drum or two into an AMS DDX.. Remember that box? AMS had two Must Have boxes. An RMX reverb and a DDX sampler/delay! About $10k each if mem serves. But, God dam when they came out I was doing some testing for Lexicon, just down the street in Waltham. I though I died and went to heaven.. I'm sure my whining about AMS had a at least a small impact on Lexicon's 480L. Sorry for babbling on, listening to you guys brought so much flooding back. All from that one Sunday night.. The fact my father hated the whole hair thing helped.. :-) Thx so much for the trip down memory lane..
Reminded me of the time in college when rolling on Molly & a Friend asked if I was ok & did I need anything > without hesitation I answered > I need a chemist 😅
@@KennyAronoffOfficial > Hunter another Rock Star in his own right no doubt. Gotta hand it to ya Kenny....a rare Cat these days to see One of Your stature take the time as you do to jump in on Your comment section > heck....even if you've hired a social media firm to make all these replies, it's still stand up imo. Have seen ya a few times over the Decades...1st of course was the Mellencamp (must have still been Cougar back then I assume) Scarecrow Tour...still have the Tour Program in stellar condition.... beautiful memories. Thanks Brother for all the amazing Years 🙏
hey Kenny great parties 5 bucks a band well cops came after a half hour but that's where bands learned to play what a time in life cheers bro I'll watch this over and over again just a great interview especially if you play a instrument
Whatever Luke would have set his mind to he would have been a hit . It was music. If it was mechanicing he'd have a chain of garages across the country. He had that personality.
Steve starting to look a lot like my crazy ole' Aunt Ethel Mae Wetherby. She was never quite the same ever since that mule kicked her in the head back in '67.
His playing, the last 12 years or so, might just be the best of his life. He may not be young anymore, but his playing is so much more tight and precise. I don't ever recall seeing him play sloppy, but I am sure that giving up drinking has helped his playing.
@@KennyAronoffOfficial lol yea i know i didnt mean it as anything bad or against lukather he has so much life experiance in the music industry and just life in general and i listen but i like yours as well i guess thats why your podcast is great cause its like were looking at friends being friends and talking about music and life.awesome man
@@danielreynosa1804 exactly Daniel.. All these guests are people I have hung with and we are friends. Luke and Ihave such a long history.. I start laughing every time I see him.
Luke is the best cat in the biz! He is also so great and kind towards his friends and fans! I am honored to know him! Love his new album, REALLY loved his book too!
@KennyAronoffOfficial I feel Steve's new album is definitely among his best work . Steve really let his soul shine through in his guitar playing when it comes to his taking his time and letting his impeccable phrasing and vibrato guide the ship. No wasted notes ,but turning on the jets only when the song or solo would be enhanced by it. And his songwriting and vocals are top on this new one as well. Definitely check it out Kenny. 😊
Berkelee music school. Paraphrased: having chops is like having 20 inch cock (as opposed to being good at playing rhythm guitar)… what are you gonna do with that? (ie when you’re a session player)
These guys here are Rock Royalty folks. There will never be another generation of these guys and girls. Before there was protools. ...these were the pros.
Thank You..and I agree. There will never be that moment in time in the music industry ever again.. That's part of the reason I want to capture these amazing people and their stories on my podcast.
@@KennyAronoffOfficial You guys gave us all something to strive for. We (my generation, im 60) dissected every song, listening and learning. Many years of lessons, I learned more in smoky clubs from trying to figure out "WTF did he he just play?" Or "HTF does he make that swing like that?" Thank you sir.
I was 13 years old watching you guys in the movie ‘Hired Gun’ now 5 years later at almost the age of 18 starting in the music business as a guitar player all I have to say is thank you thank you thank you!! Lukather is my favorite guitar player (alongside EVH) and even though I’m in no way a drummer you still had an impact on me musically. Hopefully one day I’ll be up in the ranks enough to have the honor to work with you two!
you have a good attitude keep on going I'm 59 and took care of my family but played guitar when I could now the kids are grow wife is sick but I get up early and start on the les paul it's so much fun I just bought 2 more guitars kramer with a tremolo and a cheap fender squire acoustic to beat up on when I don't feel like hooking up all the cables effects and amps anyway good luck with your future and have a great day 🎸 😊
Steve Lukather is in the Hall of Fame one of the best musicians ever he has a great singing voice and shreds the best LA session guitarist ever!!Songwriter/vocalist/ guitar God and a very super cool cat!!I am so happy to have been into Toto since I was very young hearing Hold the Line and hearing his brothers in Toto on Silk Degrees been a major fan ever since God bless Jeff and Mike and Joe Porcaro all greatly missed
Steve has to be the hardest working man in the music business! And with the humour and humility to boot! I love his enthusiasm and his respect for everyone he shares the stage with. He's brilliant at translating the energy from the stage to the audience. A master musician, storyteller, and let's not forget, that warm, soulful voice! God bless you, Lukather! Love, a millennial ❤ PS: Thank you, Kenny, for the fantastic interview! New fan here. You truly know how to make your guests feel comfortable and just let them express themselves. I felt like I was in the room ❤
Wow. Simply outstanding - felt like a fly on the wall just watching two buddies hang out and share a lot of great stories. Thanks Kenny! You just have a real knack for making your guests (friends) so comfortable and these sessions are top notch! I appreciate everything you’re doing! (And I just ordered Luke’s bio - and yours too!)
Wholeheartedly agree!! I see uploaded clips of Prince's solo on the tribute and agree it was fantastic but I always reply saying if you think this is great you need to check out Luke's outro solo on the Live in Amsterdam concert because he set the bar!!
The best audio book I’ve ever listened to! It’s like Luke was sitting next to me in the car just shooting the shit and storytelling on a long drive! This was just as fun to listen to! Kenny, Thanks for this and all the great conversations with my musical favorites! So glad I subscribed!
I felt exactly the same way I loved it I couldn’t get enough I had it with me at work and in the car. The strange thing was I was listening to luke and it was the part where he learned jeff had died Aug 5 1992, which is a week before my birthday sadly and it just happened to be Aug 5 2022… I felt the darkness and twisted almost like I was there that day with him… I’m a drummer and huge jeff Porcaro fan and loved everything he did. Kenny great interview and I thank you for moments like this. I want All those intimate stories thanks so much to all of the amazing tracks and love for the music.❤to both of you my man.
Seen LUKE 1st time on TOTO IV tour as young kid. Couldn't believe what I was seeing! He had jump suite/ strat style with Floyd but stylistically his versatility was insane! Been massive fan ever since & even had the pleasure 🙏 of meeting him. LEGENDARY STATUS FOR SURE!
Saw Luke back in 82 when I was a teen and Toto4 dominated the charts . He was amazing then and just saw him this year opening for Journey and he is even better now.
I don't think people realize that it's Luke playing that killer riff on "Beat It". All anyone talks about is EVH's solo (iconic as well) but Luke deserves credit for his guitar work as well.
I have been blessed to have met or jammed with so many of my guitar heroes. I met Steve and he was awesome. What a sweetheart of a guy. Great interview!
I love touch downs. I was hanging with Tarik Glenn today on the Colts jet talking about how he would block for Marshall Falk so he could get touch downs.
Love it KA, you the man for bringing Steve in. At 56 I’ve been drumming to all his stuff For a very long time, including Toto for so many years learned so much and from you as well. 🤘
