While it's tragic that we lost people like Eddie Van Halen, it's important to remember we still have players like Steve around, and he is an undisputed virtuoso.
@@mountainman8775 Clapton was his first and biggest hero, he said it many times. When he was young he wanted to sound like Clapton in Cream (Eddie, Brian May and many other legends were the guys that made Rolling Stone best guitarist list, putting Hendrix and Clapton on the top). Eddie is a blues player essentially, while Holdsworth is not. Another great influence to young Eddie was Lennon/Harrison guitar work in "She's so heavy".

People forget it, but Clapton was the first ever popular guitar virtuoso, the first to ever use a Marshall (the bluesbraker, which was made for him), the first to use a les paul with it (Jimmy Page was recording him in Beato and took the idea). Clapton influence was so huge during Cream years that he formed a entire generation of new guitarists, including Eddie, but also many many other greats. No wonder even Hendrix only went to England with one condition: meeting Clapton.
I think my dad was right when he said, that Luke's "problem" ist, that when he's on stage, he tends to give 150%... where 100% would be enough. But in videos as this one, where he's all laid back and plays what comes to mind, he shows his true incedibility! So much at home on the frets... so flawless and mature.... pure class!
@@aylbdrmadison1051 I agree! Silence is an important part of attracting the ear and mind and build up expectations on what's coming next. Jeff Beck is a master on that. Love Luke and he is a true pro but i haven't heard anything new that has the same melodic feel as in his early years with Toto. It's not about skill it's a mind set thing i believe.
What I like about him the most is that his playing is very melodic and he also incorporates jazz fusion into his playing. A very diverse guitar player with lots of musical depth and all the chops..
it amazes me that one band like Toto can play so many different types and styles of songs. How can they go from Hold The Line to 99 and then to Georgy Porgie?
I saw TOTO last night In Manchester. Absolutely blown away. I've seen many many bands but this gig was head and shoulders above anything I've witnessed before. The musicainship is simply off that scale
he's been playing for a billion years, and lives and breathes the guitar. That is what you have to do to have a hope in hell at getting as good as him!
Not to dis on Blackmore, but really? Better than Lukather? I'd be willing to bet that Luke can play everything that Blackmore can, but not the other way around. Luke is just astounding and he's incredibly creative and melodic. I'd take Luke over Morse too. Morse is incredible, but I just don't get him, musically speaking. Morse is an acrobat.
all you have to do is look at his credentials how many songs he played on. no one can touch his experience. even if you dont like his style its not arguable hes one of the greatest of his era.
Steve I must say for being one of the most amazing professional guitarists of this world, u are about the most humble, cool, guys I've ever seen. The man is music itself, his ideas come so clearly out of the box. Can imagine this guy in a studio session? Playing perfectly so many style during years. One of the best musician around not only a guitar player but a complete musician capable of singing, playing a wide range of instruments and above all a talented composer. Who could match his resume? Who could match his achievements? A few in fact.
just like the human voice..the guitar can have many voices and steve knows this and has spent his entire life finding new voices on the guitar and then putting them all together.actually same thing we all do when we learn guitar..steve is just on the next level and i like to refer to our guitar repertoire as our toolbox...some of us have that nice little tool box with the double trays and everything in there all nice and neat...steves got that giant rolling snap on tool kit..you know the one with all the stray tools laying all over the top of it and the drawers wont hardly close because there so full of tools...and every tool you will ever need is in that tool box....that's steve lukather...you want some new tools for your box..just go to steve..the very reason he has worked with so many people over the years..he is a trusted craftsman...a master craftsman...an amazing teacher and equally amazing human being...legend!!!
Mark Anthony Underated to the public but a very respected session player. Toto was not all about guitar like Van Halen. More of a blend of instruments. Roger Hodgson is a great guitar player but how often does his name come up in guitar polls? Singer/songwriter reputation is legendary. Is Supertramp in the RRHOF yet? If not they need to be.
He literally plays guitat on about 20 songs in my 80s playlist NOT counting Toto. He played Guitar on Somewhere Out There.....And yes Beat it too. Guy is freakin amazing
Seriously, my favorite guitarist of all time. I can't think of how many amazing guitar parts I have heard. Later, I looked up the credits: Steve Lukather. Hell of a singer as well.
Steve, the most acqurate answer to the question... If you were not musicians, what other thing would you be doing??? Answer: TEACHER, YOU MIGHT HAVE BECOME THE FAVORITE MUSIC/GUITAR TEACHER to many teenagers, because you teach so well, it seems natural in you. An inspiring teacher!!! My humble opinion...

Check out his solo work and with Toto. Luke is amazing! He's also behind the driving riff on Beat It (as Toto were the studio band for the Thriller album). The guitar throughout Lionel Richie's Running With the Night is also Luke - he was just warming up and they were recording it. Boz Scaggs' Breakdown Dead Ahead, Don Henley's Dirty Laundry, The Tubes' Talk to Ya Later and She's a Beauty. He is THE session guitarist from the 70s and 80s. ONJ's Physical, Christopher Cross... AMAZING.
I always knew Lukather was was good but man.... I need to get my hands on some of his solo albums. If you've never heard it, a really great album that he plays on is Alice Cooper's From The Inside along with a number of other great guitarists.
i think teaching is not only the teacher is the one who is giving everything but the students should also think for themselves. I personally find this very helpful.
Steve has really kept up on his guitar chops!!! I have like him since 1982 when they had that Grammy nominated album Toto 4 !!! I used to watch his Starlicks video at my friends house on the VCR!!! My parents didn't have a VCR!!! He was phenomenal then!!! Now I think he is better and more refined!!!!😁☺😁☺😁😊🎸🎵🎼🎶🎼🎼🎶🎵🎸

I asked Toto's singer Joseph Williams how he was able to sing the same songs over and over each night for decades and i liked his reply. He said he loves singing so much that the repetition doesn't phase him. He just loves to sing. I asked the same question of Tony Butala of the Lettermen and he said "You have to be an entertainer. It's not for you to enjoy but for your audience to enjoy. There may be a majority of fans in your live audience that have never heard Maria or Lay Your Head On My Shoulder or Shangra-La performed live and they expect you to do it with emotion and excellence."
To get to his level of playing I think you have to a) be real with yourself that it takes time and effort and b) enjoy constantly discovering new stuff that you can do on the guitar
Steve Lukather is such a wonderful musician and I’ve always enjoyed listening to the music of Toto. I would describe their style of music as the thinking persons brand of music because when you listen to each song it opens up your mind to endless realms of reality.

I love that Indian flavor stuff that Luke played here! He's definitely one of the greatest guitar players to ever walk the planet. The guy can play anything and is incredibly creative and melodic...and he has an awesome sense of humor too. :)
It's so true. Everyone says the same thing. Break away from only playing the pentatonic box patterns and focus on chord tones from arpeggios and familiar chord shapes. It really does sound better even if it's simple.
Steve Lukather has this really charming, almost teenage enthusiasm about guitar playing. He plays a chord and then sort of nods at the camera as if to say, "how cool is that?"
I've seen a lot of comments - as expected from the public - on Steve Lukather being an "underrated" guitarist. No sir, Steve is among the most recognized and respected guitarists in the industry.
Definitely one of the greatest rock/studio players ever.AND one of the most overlooked/undermentioned.It's not a matter of knowing theory,scales,blah blah blah...You can either recall,then execute on guitar what you've heard/practiced/learned,or you can't.And THEN,You have to find your OWN voice/sound/style.Ex;I knew a L-O-T of G-R-E-A-T players in Nashville,but you'll never hear of them.They're"Road"players.THEY practice 8-10hrs a day.
I know you will never see this But I think after Toto and all the great music you have given us. I am so impressed with your talent and friendship with such greats that you became true friends with I am I true fan. Keep doing what you do!
